Seems like the Red Sox never get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to suspensions. I would love to know if the umpires ever get this kind of treatment? Pitching has got to improve during this homestand or else it might be a very long winter.

Everyone on NESN made it sound like there was no doubt it would be reduced. Oh well. It'll be interesting to see who goes Friday. I'm guessing Papelbon, with the choice being made easier as you don't have to lose a bullpen arm with the rosters being expanded Thursday and Dinardo and Hansen being called up.

It obviously seems too harsh, but I also wish Wells would not lash into MLB like he did at his press conference. He doesn't need to give them any more reasons to suspend him again.

I am sure that Theo and company wishes he would just pitch and keep quiet...but they knew when they got him that he was 'passionate' and could sometimes go off. I hope his diatribe doesn't cost him any more time off.

why dinardo, when you have gonzo or paps

Not going to be Papelbon. Theo said on WEEI last night that he was OK with his inning count as long as he stays in the bullpen.

Sounds like it's down to DiNardo, Alvarez, or Gonzalez?

Well, the only thing that bothers me about this whole situation is the media completely crucifying him. Whenever a player refuses to talk to the media, or refuses to give his honest opinion the media bashes him, but when a player agrees to talk and gives his 100% honest opinion ... he's still bashed. I just don't get it. Do I want Wells out there bashing MLB, and Selig? No, but atleast he's honest with us. I'll take honesty over silence, or bs any day.

Wells got what he deserved. You can't push umps like that. He's lucky he didn't get more. Then he compounds that with attacking selig.

Note: This is not a first time a player has done such a thing, and as I recall Sheffield this season had tried to get into an ump's face after he was called out at 1st base

Wells apologizes to Selig

By Jimmy Golen, AP Sports Writer *|* August 31, 2005

BOSTON*--Boston Red Sox left-hander David Wells apologized on Wednesday for comments he made this week criticizing commissioner Bud Selig for his handling of baseball's steroid problems.

"I understand that I was wrong in my statements about these issues and for that I apologize," Wells said in a statement issued by the players' association after Wells met with baseball officials. "Now that I have had this opportunity to sit down and discuss the issues, I better understand the procedures that go with steroid testing."

Wells lashed out at Selig after losing his appeal of a six-game suspension on Monday, saying the commissioner "isn't doing a thing" about steroids. The pitcher, who called Selig an "idiot" in a spring training interview with the Hartford Courant, accused Selig of retaliating for his past comments in handing out the latest suspension.

The boisterous lefty also claimed Selig withheld results of Rafael Palmeiro's steroids test to avoid detracting from the Hall of Fame inductions. Rob Manfred, baseball's executive vice president of labor relations, called Wells' version "pure fiction."

The Red Sox promptly apologized for Wells' comments. The pitcher was summoned along with his agent to New York and met for about an hour with Manfred and union lawyers Michael Weiner and Bob Lenaghan.

"I met today with Major League Baseball and the players' association and was happy to have the chance to answer questions about my press conference the other day and to learn more about the drug testing program and on-field disciplinary suspensions," Wells' statement said. "I now know that neither Bud Selig nor anyone else delayed the Palmeiro case and that the commissioners office has worked with the union to improve the steroid policy."

Wells is scheduled to complete his suspension and pitch on Sunday.

Manfred declined comment on the meeting
