Lots of great info here, unfortunately it is an insider column, which i have been advised not to reprint in a post.

Sox mentioned:

"Matt Clement, Johnny Damon, Curt Schilling, Jason Varitek, [and] David Wells" were waived, but "would never be traded."

A bit about Manny:

"Some players never get put on waivers, and as of the last couple of days, no, Manny Ramirez had not gone on. Neither have any of the Marlins' Great Three of Miguel Cabrera, Josh Beckett and A.J. Burnett, nor Nomar Garciaparra, Kerry Wood, most of the Athletics and Yankees, Jeff Weaver, Kip Wells, Jason Schmidt, Scott Eyre, Rafael Palmeiro, Alfonso Soriano ..."

Bronson Arroyo was waived and claimed, apparently, before being withdrawn along w/ Clemens and Suppan, among others.

Bill Mueller and Kevin Youkilis were also waived, claimed and withdrawn.

Available players:

Steve Kline got through, so did Ryan Vogelsong, Jason Christiansen, Scott Schoeneweis, Justin Speier, LaTroy Hawkins, Duaner Sanchez, Ramon Ortiz and Braden Looper, who are all on teams that might consider selling.

"And starters? Josh Fogg, Odalis Perez, Derek Lowe, Tom Glavine, Joe Mays, Tomo Ohka, Jose Lima, Bruce Chen and Joel Pineiro. Now, obviously Glavine, Lowe, Perez and Mays have contract issues, but they are experienced major-league starters, and when the Mets get Steve Trachsel back, they will have six starters and might look to see whether there is a taker for Trachsel or Glavine."

and

"Mike Piazza cleared, as did Griffey and Sweeney. Frank Catalanotto, Dustan Mohr, Todd Hollandsworth, Todd Walker and Edgardo Alfonzo are players who could be interesting pickups for the stretch drive, as well."

Looper would be a great addition at this point.

I'd take Looper in a heartbeat. He's had a tough year, but still has a 3.33 ERA and brings 95 mph heat; also pitched great in the 2003 postseason. He's about the best thing you could imagine getting in August through waivers. And the Mets desperately need a 1B. Maybe Petagine? The 1B logjam has to be cleared up somehow.

Looper actually makes sense to fall that far in waivers. He's pretty expensive, having a tweener year..probably too pricey for anyone else to make a claim on or take the risk on.

I think he'd be an improvement on Remlinger, though. Not exactly high standards in the Red Sox pen these days. ;)

I don't really get the whole waiver thing. Why would the Astros want to give up Clemens?

they wouldn't. Some teams will run their entire 40 man roster through waivers. Reason being, the more players you list, the easier it is to sneak someone through. Teams are also more careful about who they claim for fear they will get Canseco'd.

I figured the Yanks would put a claim on him. He'd be a huge pickup for Boston.

I guess not because he has already passed thru waivers so now anybody can make a trade for him without being blocked.

no one in their right mind would want kevin millar in their town much less on their team.

right now I would trade him for a one legged bat boy and a broken bat. but i dont think we'd get that.

I am very surprised we didnt place a claim on Clemens.

take this with a grain of salt but some guy on the espn message boards said looper is headed here and he called the tek signing and miller signing like a day or 2 before they actually happened.

i for one will not beleive it til I see it.

Speier, Kline, Hawkins, and Looper all interest me.

What about Joel Pineiro... He is a young kid, once a top 5 prospect in the Seattle organization. You trade for him, stash him in AAA for the next month, bring him up in September and see how he progresses. He'd be a good player to take a flier on (not for 2005, but for 2006).

Unfortunately, I really don't see us going out and getting anyone that is really stellar. The cost will simply be too high - just as it was at the trading deadline. If the FO has shown us one thing, it is the reluctance to trade top 5 prospects to fill an immediate need - unless the possible return on that investment justifies it. Of course it would be nice to get a young arm for the pen, but does anyone really think that a team like Seattle (for Pineiro) or NYM (for Looper) are not going to ask for something massive in return - ala Pedroia, Hanley, etc. And does anyone think that either of those guys (Pineiro or Looper) are worth more in the long run than Pedroia or Hanley?

:o ;)

How the hell does Justin Speier get through waivers? A 38:8 K:BB ratio in 50 innings. A 0.80 WHIP and 2.16 ERA.

No team in the majors could stand to take a $1.9 million contract for that?

Since this is about Gammons, I thought it was interesting that Gammons just said on WEEI that Vladimir Guerrero would win the MVP over Ortiz or Manny in a land slide. Kind of caught me off guard there when he said that.

gammons is a f***ing baffoon, and again nothing he hever says actually happens.

I would like to se prrof that his "insider" information is antyhgin more than a seat located near the wire service..if he says the MVVP is going to Vlad, it is safe bet it wont.

Speaking about waiver wire deals Gammons on WEEI said

"I saw the cleared waiver list today and none of the players we would want cleared waivers"

In addition the players WE wanted to trade who have value like Mueller, Youk, Arroyo and Myers failed to clear waivers.

At the trade deadline I warned the Yanks wouldn't allow us to make any important waiver wire deals. I was told "You don't understand the waiver process. Teams put so many guys on waivers the Yanks can't POSSIBLY anticipate and block deals. Too many guys to claim.

Well we HAVE been blocked. Now will the know it alls come to this thread to apologize for being wrong? I doubt it. We'll see.
