Good choice, he's got the mental disipline. He think h'e going to hang in another 2 to 3 years as a back-up / DH though.

good choice as a DH, he feasts when the bases are loaded---2 grand slams in one game from either side of the plate. need I say more? ;)

What amazes me with this thread- in fact this entire board- is that everyone is so quick to slam Millar, a member of the World Series Championship team, a member of the team which broke the curse and gave us 2 of the most exciting seasons any baseball fan has ever been treated to. Yet, everyone is so quick to defend others players who weren't with the club during the last 2 years and do much less OVERALL for the team.

It's puzzling at best. I really hope Millar stays with us, he is a terrific player because of what he does for the entire team on & off the field.

2004 stats- avg. .297, OBP .383!, 74 RBI from the middle/bottom of the order, 18 HR. He did K a lot. He only commited 9 errors with a good FLD% (in the .980s or so among 3 positions).

But what is even more important and something most guys cannot bring to a team is what he provides as a clubhouse guy and a great team player. In a team sport a good team player is valuable.

Stop slamming on Millar, you all who have been slamming him just don't know what we have in Millar. There is a reason the Sox won a World Series, it comes down to the players- all of them.

Here goes-

Renteria-

Only plays SS, questionable clubhouse personality

Millar-

Avg. .273, OBP .357, Errors 5, HR 4, RBI 40, Runs 41

Playes several positions, Unquestionable great clubhouse personality

You lose. Millar plays only 3 position, LF, RF, and 1b, and he sucks at all of them. He is a liablity in any defensive area. Hell, he is a liabity at DH.

Edgar Renteria can play 3b or maybe even 2nd if he was asked. He was even offering to move positions of Hanley Ramirez in the future.

Even the hitting stats make you look like an idiot, Millar has a lower average, less home runs, less runs, less RBI's, maybe even a lowe SLG% too.

Please shut up.

Millar in 2005 is a better player.

renteria in 2005 is batting .281, 6 HR, 44 RBI, 74 Runs, 8 SB

-the league average in batting for shortstops is .269, edgar is batting .281.

-the league average in homeruns for SS is 5, edgar has 6

-the league average for rbi's for SS is 25, edgar has 44

-the league average for stolen bases for SS is 6, edgar has 8

now for millar....

hes batting .273, 4 HR, 40 RBI, 41 runs, 0 SB

-the league average in batting for 1B is .278, millar is batting .273

-the league average in homeruns for 1B is 10, millar has a pitiful 4

-the league average in RBI for 1B is 44, millar has 40

-the league average in SB for 1B is 1, Millar has none

Wrong again dumbass. Millar has played 3 positions, only has a handful of errors, Renteria plays only one position (he has only played one position) and can't play that position for s*** with 22 errors- Millar is a much better fielder this year. You can't say Millar is a liability at 1st when you can't back it up you f***ing fool.

As for hitting, besides runs, it's really too close to call, but that's because Renteria is batting in the 2 hole. This is countered by Millar hitting into half the double plays.

Millar owns in OBP and errors. Everyone's argument that Millar's glove is worse than Renteria is delusional and clearly not watching the same clusterf*** SS I am.

god how many guys did millar leave on base saturday night like 7 or more, and he was like 0 for f***in 4 with 3 infield pop ups, yeah hes really clutch

he sucks he better be gone next year

0 for 4- stop the presses! He's in a slump! OMFG!!!! But with his 22 errors Renteria's the best SS in the league and is much better than that "liability" at 1st who has 5 errors.

*points and laughs*

Clueless.

Any flat-footed Major League first baseman can hit for power (which, by the way, Millar doesn't do). In fact, they are EXPECTED too. Aside from A-Rod/Tejada/Formerly Nomar, any offensive production from a SS is generally considered a bonus.

Renteria's and Millar's numbers are virtually identical, except Renteria has done it in roughly 100 more at bats. Neither is a goat (although Millar often makes an ass of himself, so I guess I should so donkey), and neither is a god. Let's leave it at that, ok?

What was last year was last year( BTW he pretty much sucked late in the year and in the play-offs ). This year, he' has not produced. His power is discusting for a first basmen/ corner outfielder. Defensively, he's adequate at best at 1st and a heart attack in the outfield. Your logic totally escaoes me, pick on one of our better players ( Renteria ) and support a stiff. We don't really need him next year. We'll get a better PR person for the media, and a comic trainer, 1st, 3rd base coach, or a bench coach.

Guybo, way to be a hypocrite, saying in another thread that we shouldn't resort to childish name calling and we should grow up. Yet, i am a "dumbass" and "f***ing fool". Why bother? That right there shows you are less mature then me, and you are embaressed because your stats don't back you up. So what if Millar only has 4 errors at first base? IT'S FIRST BASE. Put Millar at SS and see how many errors he makes. I will be my life on it that it will be way higher then Renterias. Has Millar won 2 gold gloves? NO. Millar is not good at first base. He is less that average. He has no range there. It's almost a given that if there was a good first baseman there, Renteria's error total would be less. Millar is horrible in the outfield. He may not have much errors there, but that is because he never gets to much. He is slow and his arm is weak. Still, your stats mean absolutly nothing. You are trying to compare 1B to SS.

Man, the only way to make this guy happy must be to have a team full of pokey reeses. Nothing but happy, light hitting, good fielding players.

Is it a slump if he's been in it for the entire season?

j/k, honestly with what he has been able to contribute the past couple of seasons, I'm ok for giving a guy a pass for ONE off year. But short of using him as a dh I can't really see the advantage of keeping him around, especially if there is a chance he could be traded to address a need as the sox get ready for that stretch run for the division title. The sole upside to his game is his bat, which makes up for the rest of his mediocre to sub-mediocre defense & speed.

I'm not trying to hate on the guy, but you gotta call a spade a spade here. Since he wasn't dealt before the deadline, if there is room on roster, then yeah, keep him (better him than K-Horn), you never know if the situation arises when you need him in the lineup, but don't try to justify we should keep him b/c we need another cheerleader/media whore you has never seen a mic didn't have a quote for. Sometimes those things have a way of backfiring...just like the whole shots of alcohol fiasco prior to each game he let slip last year.

As far as Renteria goes, I for one would have probably preferred to keep Cabrera after what he was able to give us after the trade last year and I thought he was pretty clutch in the playoffs. Despite his career numbers, I wasn't impressed w/Renteria. I mean c'mon, its not like St. Louis went out of its way to keep him, especially for what he was asking. If you ask me, St. Louis is better off with Eckstein than with Renteria (and I'm pretty sure for less money.).

Guybo, Renteria plays SHORTSTOP, Millar plays first. Any player in the majors can play first base if needed, it takes a special breed to play short.

Yes, talent ! And Renteria has a ton of it.

Guybo obviously thinks Edgar Renterria is some bum we picked up off the street. He obviously thinks this Renterria guy is some undrafted rookie we picked up this year. If he knew Renterria really was, and looked at his career numbers, which by the way.....started at the age of 19, he would realize that maybe he has had a little let down of a year, and in fact does not suck. You don't win Gold Gloves by sucking. You don't go to all star games by sucking. you don't win silver slugger awards by sucking.
