Kenny Rogers reinstated by arbitrator

By BEN WALKER, AP Baseball Writer

August 9, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- Kenny Rogers was reinstated Tuesday when an arbitrator ruled that commissioner Bud Selig overstepped his authority by suspending the Texas pitcher for 20 games and fining him $50,000 for shoving two cameramen. Rogers has already sat out 12 games. He will return to the Rangers for Wednesday night's game at Boston, and his fine will be converted to a charitable contribution. The ruling, by arbitrator Shyam Das, followed a hearing Monday in Chicago. "I strongly disagree with arbitrator Das' decision today,'' Selig said in a statement. "It sends the wrong message to every one of our constituents: the fans, the media, and our players.

"There is a standard of behavior that is expected of our players, which was breached in this case. The arbitrator's decision diminishes that standard and is contrary to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. In my opinion, the decision is seriously ill-conceived,'' he said.

-----And get this Kenny Rogers will get the start tomorrow night!!? lets hope that ammount of time off from pitching in a game will have him throwing rusty

Pfft, the amount of boos he receives and the loudness of them will get to him. Besides, Rogers hasn't done that well against the Sox in the past, if I remember correctly. *Too lazy to go find stats at the moment*

ah man I wouldnt mind at all getting a seat even in the last row of the bleachers to just boo the f*** out of him. MLB is ruining their respect by America first with how Palmeiro was dealed with now this bogus removal of Kenny's suspension

Im not sure of recently but career wise he has pitched in 45 games against the red sox, 11-6 record posting an ERA of 4.38. Has 4 saves and done 3 complete games. I'm hoping he will be rusty since by tomorrow, it will have been span of 15 days he hasnt pitched in a game

Hello, Bud Selig, grow a spine and actually fight to take back your sport. <_ no one would dare challenge david stern on his decisions.>

He can't do anything about this the arbitators word rules over his. This is ********. It's good to know that if I become a baseball player I can go nuts and attack two people for doing thier job, breaking thier equipment and not get suspended for any more than 13 games.

Baseball really sucks sometimes. No one challenged it when Artest got suspended the entire season.

Absolutely true. It's important to understand that Selig made the 20 game decision, and upon Rogers' apeal, it was upheld. Major League Baseball is not responsible for the reduction in the suspension and has no choice in the matter.

That's why Bud Selig was so freaking pissed off today.

Personally, I think it's a shame. Kenny Rogers assaulted two cameramen, had a penalty laid out, and he should have paid his penalty.

That having been said, hopefully Red Sox fans give him the welcome he deserves and boo the hell out of him.

Basically the NBA just gave up and knew that when Stern handed it down, there's no chance of it getting overturned. I don't know if Selig is intimidated to take a stance, not saying I could do his job better, but it's a commish's job to defend the integrity of the sport, too bad if it hurts a player's feelings. Artest even had a chat with Stern, but his sentence still stood.

Rogers didn't seem contrite. He verbally jabbed a cameraman as he was getting fingerprinted. He just doesn't learn.

Let's all hail Ortiz for hitting Rogers with the first ball he hits...ROFL..hothead got what he deserved...

I totally agree that it is complete ******** his suspension was lifted. This is basically an open invitation for any player to get pissed off and flip out without having to yeild the consequences. It should come down to the integrity of the sport...and Rogers obviously has none.

I don't agree with all of Stern's decisions either, but he takes a definitive stance whereas Selig is a puppet. Players have all the power in MLB, considerably more than in the NBA and NFL.

You do not mess with Nolan Ryan. Punk.
