big new story, though not surprising

The Red Sox announced that pitcher Wade Miller has gone on the 15-day disabled list with a sore shoulder.

Im thinking see a couple starts by Jeremi Gonzalez or maybe a call-up for Jon Lester

Miller did not look good last night at all and you can tell he was hurting. I would expect to see Papelbon called up

Timlin is not a closer. In an interview earlier in the year he said that he's not a closer and has no interest in being one. If a guy doesn't want to close then he'll be a bad closer. That position is all about the attitude. That said, will foulke ever be 100% this season?

i agree, after his solid performance in his first start, why not let Papelbon go again, when Schills ready u can make the switch, Papelbon ot the pen. Plus, I'm liking Gonzales in the pen so far

Jon Papelbon will not return to the rotation, NESN reported the Red Sox are trying to get him in the routine of being a setup man possibly even closer for the bullpen for rest of 2005 in which he will get called up early September and dont want to mess with the schedule they have him on.

With an off day tomorrow, the Sox won't need a replacement starter for Miller until Tuesday in Detroit. Who makes that start? Francona said it wouldn't be Schilling. The brass knows who it will be but isn't telling. The candidates include Jeremi Gonzalez, who is the long man, or someone from Pawtucket such as Lenny DiNardo or Abe Alvarez, though that would involve another roster move

well, I dont know about all that-- jerry remy said jpapel will continue to be a starter in the future but probably not this season...he said that the sox keep a close eye of the number of innings the guys throw in the minors and he said papelbon has exceeded his limit. One of the reasons he is the bullpen is to reduce his innings as opposed to prepare him for being a bullpen guy. jerry said the guy will continue to be a starter so I dont know those a pretty different takes on the same move.

personally, I dont think they would turn a potentially fantatsic starter into a bullpen guy at this point in his career. but that's just my opinion.

yes he is going to be a starter as of next season most likely, but Sox are looking at him for bullpen help the end of this season--god nesn, gordon edes, joe carfardo have confirmed this numerous times that schilling will only come back if foulke is back to his 2004 self

Aug 3 The Boston Red Sox optioned Papelbon back to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday, following his solid debut against Minnesota Sunday. The 24-year-old righthander handled his first big league assignment well before walking the bases loaded in the fifth inning. He managed to work his way out of trouble, finishing with four hits, five walks and two earned runs allowed over 5.1 frames. He struck out seven Twins, but didn't get the decision in a 4-3 Boston victory.

-----------

Papelbon will go to the bullpen for Pawtucket upon his return. Not only would the Red Sox like to limit his growing innings total, but also hope that he might help out in the struggling Boston pen down the stretch. This wouldn't be a long-term assignment. It's likely that Papelbon will be a member of the Red Sox' rotation within the next year or so.

Gonzalez is the best option here. He's got starting experience, held his own as a starter for the most part earlier this year, and has been a battler for the Sox this season. In fact, I think he already pitched against Detroit this season and pitched well (5 innings, 3 runs). This is why Gonzalez is on the roster. He can pitch in long relief, blowout games, or spot start in an emergency. This would qualify as an emergency IMO.

Schilling will not start that game. The organization has been adament that Schilling is the closer until Foulke returns to form. If Foulke doesn't return to form this season, Schilling is the closer for the season.

Papelbon will not start the game. The Red Sox are not only limiting his inning count (like I think sarasoxfan said), but are also looking for him to help the team out of the bullpen this season. Throwing him into a spot start would screw up that plan, and the Red Sox always plan things ahead.

I wouldn't put it past the team to call up an emergency starter ala DiNardo or even Alvarez, but for right now I say they throw Jeremi Gonzalez.

I'd like to see either DiNardo, Alvarez, or Papelbon take the start. If Remlinger can't do the job as a lefty setup man I would really like to see Alvarez or DiNardo take the start so we may get a look at possible bullpen help in September.
