very sad story, gained a lot of respect for the reds

CINCINNATI-- Cincinnati Reds players rallied around a 6-year-old boy after his grandfather collapsed in the stands this week.

"We just tried to make a bad situation a little better," outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

While paramedics were working on the grandfather, a security officer took the boy to the Reds' bullpen. The Reds did not release the name of the grandfather, who died Wednesday night of an apparent heart attack.

The boy, identified as Antonio Perez, sat with players for the last two innings of the game, and Griffey went and got him when the game ended. The boy participated in the Reds' high-fives celebrating their 8-5 victory over Atlanta, and he then joined the players in the clubhouse.

Clubhouse manager Rick Stowe said the Reds showered the boy with bats, wristbands and autographed baseballs. Shortstop Felipe Lopez gave him the batting helmet that he wore in this year's All-Star game.

The players entertained the boy until his parents arrived.

"We play a game," Griffey told the Enquirer. "What he was going through doesn't compare. It was important that the little guy not be by himself."

sarasoxfan, I think adding Sheffield into a thread specifically about the Reds consoling the poor kid is inappropriate.

Sad story, but it was a great effort by the Reds to comfort the boy. :)

Great story. It's a shame that stories like this get little air-time so long as there's an update on Terrell Owens, no matter how insignificant it is, that ESPN can spend a half hour talking about.

A sad story, but a great story. See Red is right about this one. It's terrible that stories like this get a minute on Sports Center(if mentioned at all) and ESPN spends the rest of the show talking about Sheffiled, TO, and everything else that isn't nearly as important as this.

Griffey again shows that he really is one of the good guys in the sports and a story like this just makes me respect him so much more. I think this makes up for the way that the Reds completely boned Danny Graves a little earlier in the season. Great job by everyone that helped this kid out.

Yeah no question. There was no reason to bring Sheffield into this. There are plenty of places to bash the Yankees on this board, use them.

I choked up reading this. Great job by the Reds. *tips cap*

This is something you like to hear in an era of careless millionares in baseball.
