BENCHED? Are you KIDDING me?!?!

Womack has been pretty cluctch lately, maybe he should have a shot. ;)

Second thought, not that there was any first, no. He's a jerk to put it lightly, but he's a jerk that hits.

Edit: Actually Sheffield might be benched like it or not because I think he still has to serve his two game suspension...almost forgot about that until someone at a Yankee board brought it up. But he's also trying to appeal the suspension (ONE game??), so yeah, go figure.

Maybe I shouldn't say Jeter isn't a good leader, because that's not fair to him. I don't know what he does or doesn't do in the clubhouse, but I can go with what he does do on the field. The fact is, he isn't one of the great hitters in the game and everyone makes him out to be one of them.... and to me, that is pitiful.

Gotcha. ;) I admit he's overhyped, but he's a media darling of New York and Tim McCarver, none of which Jeter orchestrated. I think? He doesn't put up the offense of Tejada (or A-Rod), doesn't have spectacular range at SS, but if there was ever a player who had the best instincts, of just being there at the right moment (and intangibles, I can hear the groans), it'd be Jeter. He gets a free pass at times, but there are times when he doesn't - he got booed at Yankee Stadium during that 0-32 stretch. I can name you some Yankees that do fly under the radar when they underperform (Posada, is that you?)...

No kidding; Jeter's been atrocious with RISP. So if you're doing leadership by performance, Sheffield is hitting about .400 with RISP. Take your pick!

Quick chime in from me on vacation in Sandwich, MA:

Crespo should not be banned because he knows our farm system better than just about anybody.

Riverside, God love 'em, is a huge "homer", but he's die-hard too.

Everyone has their opinion on the Giambi issue, yet nobody will be proven right, EVER.

Sheff's a dick, and I love how he's holding form in NY just like he did in Milwaukee, LA, Atlanta.

Night all, I'll be back regularly next week.

just came across this on jimrome.com, thought it was good

In the latest New York Magazine, Gary Sheffield was asked who the leader of the New York Yankees is and you’ve got to hear what he said.

"I know who the leader is on the team," Sheffield said. "I ain't going to say who it is, but I know who it is. I know who the team feeds off.”

Wait a second. Let’s stop right and rewind. Do you recall that during the final four games of the Yankees v. Red Sox championship series last year, Sheffield went 1 for 17 with zero RBI’s?

Now fast forward and let’s get back to Sheff’s interview about the being the Yankees leader. Sheffield blasts the New York media by saying, “I know who the opposing team comes in knowing they have to defend to stop the Yankees. I know this. The people don't know. Why? The media don't want them to know. They want to promote two players in a positive light, and everyone else is garbage."

Really? Is Matsui garbage? Is Mariano garbage? Is Giambi garbage? I live here in New York City and certainly don’t think Sheffield is treated like garbage.

How many rings does Sheff have? Oh yeah, he got that ring in Miami, but since he’s become a Yankee he’s won; zero!

None of that surprised me, I just think that his words were taken out of context. He is great buddies with A-rod and I'm sure it is being implied that the two players in the limelight are Jeter and Arod. I have a hard time believing he would say that about one of his pals. The media gets away with it anyway because of Sheff's reputation. Sheff just needs to keep his mouth shut, hit the damn ball, stop catching balls in the outfield like he still has a shoulder injury, and play ball like an all-star.

i think his quote about shutting up 50,000 yankee fans has a special place in thier hearts as well.

I was surprised manny was on the thing.

It was cool that sheff got 19 even in new york.

I don't think the 2001 World Series helped either. Or talks of him waiving his no trade clause to come to the Yankees and then signing with the Red Sox. Now he is one of the most hated men by Yankees fans and has a kid named Gehrig. Go figure.

I am curious--how are yankee fans reacting to alan embree?

 I cheered for him when the Sox brought him into a game. I mean come on, I'd rather be like the Angels and have no lefty than have Embree as our "lefty specialist".

Umm, last I checked, the Angels BP is getting worn out too; Mike Scioscia can't really say anything else. K-Rod picked up a loss.

Skip Bayless = gag. Shuddup. Ha, heard on "Cold Pizza" that ppl stop and ask Paige why he hasn't, well, whacked him yet.

While the Angel bullpen has been imploding lately, they're still dangerous. They just took Oakland's best shot and still have a 2 game lead in the division. This week's series looks like a preview for the pennant.

Any surprise Sheff was friends with Bonds until he said Bond's arrogance/personality got in the way? Hahahahah (Pot meet Kettle...)

Sheff seems like the guy that would have your back...sorta, whereas Bonds, his head is too far up his arse.

Oh yeah, still don't trust this (Yankees) team to go up against Anaheim. They've owned us for the most part. Btw, we started the dent in the Angels BP (see two consecutive blown saves). Gotta respect them, though.

lol yeah you did...in a close game it could go either way...btw, how long before Vlady starts getting the Bonds treatment and is pretty much getting walked in every AB?

Please, don't mention Guerrero. :( We could use a cannon of an arm in the OF. And we actually had a shot at him, too. So Sheffield better hit, absolutely CRUSH that ball.

Vlad can hit it anywhere, but I think his one weakness is busting him inside, which Oakland tries to do (Zito! ). Get him off that plate (or try to).

Found this MLB.com article on, funny you should mention this!, Vlad and the Bonds treatment (that's intentional walks, not the other stuff).

Guerrero gets Bonds treatment
