Okay, we'll probably know what the Red Sox are going to do with him by Monday. But what would you do with him?

here are some suggestions:

-Wake or Miller vs. Papelbon. Let them go at it for the 5 spot.

-He could get 1-2 more starts, but when both return, the Sox would have 7 starters, Schilling included. I would rather see him start in Triple-A than being wasted on the bench in Boston. Plus this is not the time for experiments. The Sox have a 5 game winning streak right now and will face the Royals next then the Twins. The Yankees also seem to have a pact running right now with the devil, so the next couple series seem to be very important. Dont know, if you want your rookie to start in those games. He pitched very good in his first start in Triple-A too, but then got bombed in his second start. And right now, you want your starter to go as many innings as possible.

-I would love to see Papelbon get one more start. With nerves aside, and a new mindset on how to pitch to major league hitters, he could be real good

-I think we can all agree that we all liked what we saw last night, but I don't think seeing him get lit up next game he starts would be good for him (I'm not saying that he will). I would send him back to AAA, thank him for a job well done, and tell him he will be on the roster full time next season.

As for Miller, he pitched well in Houston. Maybe he is 100% healed now and has all his stuff back. Assuming he isn't injured, he could be a #1 or #2 guy. With Houston, his line was pretty nice (when he pitched)

-Keep him around as long as he is needed. When the starters have returned if there is a need for long relief in the pen (better than Halama), then he should be looked to for that IF he continues to have success at the major league level. If he falls off, then back to AAA. I was impressed with this start. I would be in favor of leting him run as long as their is a pitching roster spot for him

I don't think theres any question that we send him back down. The question is, just when we chose to do so. I think you could give the kid another start without really disrupting the order of the rotation. Well, I'd atleast like to see him make one more start. But I'd assume just like Abe last year that this is a one and done type deal for him, and I expect him to be moved back down to AAA before the end of the week. I wouldn't go promising him a spot in the rotation next year because a lot can happen before next season.

At one point watching Papelbon pitch yesterday, I kept thinking to myself... Wow, we got another starter. Then I realized, we still had Clement, Wake, Miller, Wells, Arroyo, AND Schilling in the pen. So I dont think there is a place on the roster for him right now, but I do think that we should open a spot for him next year, because he showed some real flashes of being a frontline starter in the future.

I think Papelbon should go back and start another 10 games at AAA.

At this point, I don't want him in the bullpen because he's got to build up his arm strength for possible use later this season (if someone is injured) and for next year. I want him starting next season and I think there will be a spot for him; I think Arroyo might be traded in the offseason as his value will never be quite this high.....but then again papelbon has showed he can help the sox now, and he was once a RP and our bullpen sucks

on the miller saga, people forget that the deal with miller was as much for next year as it was for this. if he can hold off serious arm issues, he might be the best the sox have next season, especially if he pitched like he did against the ChiSox

Papelbon will most likely go back down for the rest of August to work on his command, but expect him back up in September when the rosters expand to 40.

Does miller have an option for next year, I though we signed him to a 1 year deal with an option?

I think hes arbitration eligible next year...

I believe we have a very cheap option on him for next year.

EDIT: Actually according to Hardball Dollars we have no option for him next year. Although I'm not sure how reliable the site is.

his command does need some tweaking with the 5 walks, but man 7 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings in his major league debut does bode very well for him. I see him going back to Pawtucket thru early September, who knows maybe have come back as a long reliever until the end of the season, omg I cant believe how fast this season has gone by

Yeah there is no way he makes the rotation this season because of one start against arguably the WORST offense in baseball. Very good start none the less and I loved to see the 7 Ks. Too many walks and a lot of teams will kill you when you do that.

Good start but back to AAA you go for now. Next year could be very different and there may be a shot in the bullpen this year. Considering we didn't add any relievers its a possibility. I like bringing kids up later in the season for bullpen help because they are geared up and more fresh than veterans who have been through a long season already.

The other kid (Delcarmen) I would expect has solidified (spelling ouch!) a spot in our bullpen. Hansen still has a shot and I'm wondering how long until Sanchez and Lester stay at AA until being promoted to AAA.

Send him down.

Papelbon's offspeed pitches weren't terribly impressive, he needs to refine those in AAA. His fastball is ML ready though. When he refines those pitches, he'll be nasty. Expect him back in September, and he won't ever go back down to the minors.

Gonzalez down, keep Papelbon. I think he's offspeed stuff might of been off just because it was his first time. Very good fastball though.

Well ask yourself the question, would you rather Papelbon refine his pitches in the bigs against elite hitter in a penant race, or in AAA where he can tinker with every pitch?

Good point. On second thought AAA would be better. Didn't Schilling show him how to throw a splitter anyway? Maybe in AAA he can try it out. Imagine if he had a good one like Schilling's.

He threw a good spliter to Jacque Jones, he didn't swing at it, but it had a nice dropoff to it.

Exactly. It would suck to rush someone with as much potential as Papelbon. I'd want him to fully develop his pitches before making regular starts for us, so he can be most effective. Rushed prospects are never fun.

let's hope. he looks promising, but I want to see him against a good offense like the O's or Yanks, not this year (unless we have a good sized lead in the AL East, but that not likely), but next year.

whens lester and sanchez expected to be promoted to AAA?

They SHOULD be in AA ball for the rest of the year, then get a full year in Pawtucket in '06. They have no reason to be rushed to the bigs.

good to hear for papelbon's first outing in the bullpen relief:

Once again, the SkyChiefs had the PawSox number, edging the visitors 3-2 on Friday night. Lenny DiNardo (5-3) took the loss, but certainly pitched well enough to win. DiNardo gave up just 2 earned runs in 7 innings. It was DiNardo's longest outing of the season. Jonathon Papelbon worked a scoreless eighth inning, striking out 2. It was Papelbon's first appearance out of the bullpen for Pawtucket. Kevin Youkilis got the Sox on the board early, with a first inning homer. The SkyChiefs swept the three game set in Central New York, and took 5 of 7 in the home and home series. The PawSox are back at McCoy Saturday night at 6:05, facing Buffalo. Anastacio Martinez (3-2) faces Billy Traber (3-6).

Anastacio Martinez is still around? I thought they released him. Good, i Kind of liked him.

He's got an ERA over 5, the thought was to see if he could break camp with the big league club in spring training, but he was everyone's gimp in March, and was sent back down to Pawtucket.

Maybe starting tonight, can revive him.
