ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported Monday that the Red Sox are believed to have interest in Young, who has hit just .212 since June 1. Stark also reported that Young is close to vesting an $8 million option for next year. The Boston interest has one stipulation, Stark reported: That Detroit pays for part of Young's salary or takes a big contract in return. Young is a lifetime .308 hitter at Fenway Park.

I wouldn't be suprised if the Sox do get a power hitter for 1b, just because theres a lot of good ones fairly cheap. I wouldn't be suprised if the Dmitri Young rumors are true, just because the Tigers have really soured on him, Anybody who has a nickname 'da meat hook' and wears a do-rag would likely fit in good on this team.

another option is ryan howard, he wants out of philly and is a winner and will smack 30 homers maybe more in a full season

I think the Red Sox would definately be interested in a Ryan Howard, but I wouldn't be surprised if Dmitri Young were in their sights. Keep in mind they've tried to trade Millar to Houston and Minnesota (among other teams) and may be interested in a replacement who can help them immediately.

id love to see d young in boston. we need to move on from kevin millar and get some power at 1B. Ryan Howard might be tough to get because he is only 24 and the Phillies.

Big upgrade power wise (16 hr) average is .250

1 negative is he has only played 28 games at 1B this year but is a .990 career fielder at 1B. (which is average since ortz also has a .990 career pct.)

Scouting Report----

Hitting

A switch-hitter, Young has fast hands and loves to jump on first-pitch fastballs. His hand-eye coordination is excellent. For a hitter who does not walk much, he does not strike out much, either. He is balanced in his stance and covers both side of the plate well. He takes the ball to all different fields. Young is a better hitter lefthanded than righthanded, but he might have more power righthanded.

Baserunning & Defense

Young has gotten bigger with age, but he remains a good athlete. Last season, he was thrust mostly in the role of DH upon his return from the disabled list. His best position is first base-he did not make an error there in 25 games last season. In 2003, Young played 61 games in the outfield, but last season, because he was coming off a leg injury, it was just two. He is a below-average outfielder, but he will make the routine play and throw to the right base. Young's worst position is third. Putting him there is a stretch at this stage of his career. He has below-average speed, but he is a smart baserunner who runs hard at all times

I think theo needs to make 3 trades.

1. mueller and millar for mays and romero.

2. Mays, arroyo and anibal for burnett and lowell

3. get a 1B such as dimitri young or ryan howard (preferably young because he would be cheaper).

Id rather have ryan howard, just for that simple fact that he is younger. Plus he shows alot of potential.

I'm still really interested in Lyle Overbay....its been rumored he is available because they have some kid coming up behind him

Cecil Fielder's son. Prince Fielder.

It wouldn't be a bad acquisition (Overbay) because he's a lefty bat and a decent one at that-- but what we need really is a strong righty bat to complement Ortiz/Olerud as the other 1B options.

Young is a good idea because he's a switch hitter (albeit stronger from the left side apparently).

You think Young can be an everyday 1B?? I hear his defense is a little average which is another reason I mentioned Overbay.

Young being a switch-hitter is good though and that would give us V-tek, Mueller, Bellhorn, and Young as switch hitters....teams could never find the right pitching matchup

we'd have to give a lot up for howard but i would definitly want him

I must say....an infield composed of:

1B: Ryan Howard

2B: Dustin Pedroia

SS: Hanley Ramirez

3B: Kevin Youkilis

...looks nice for the future....but i highly doubt it will end up like that

considering edgar just started his frst season in a 4 year $40 million contract, id say so

but since rent said he would switch to 3B when hanley is ready it could be:

1B: Howard/Youk

2B: Pedroia

SS: Hanley

3B: Renteria

*place oooo's and ahhhh's here*

Yeah I was thinking more along the lines of 4 years from now....all those guys would still be in there 20s except for Youk who would be 30 I think....but its hard to see everyone sticking around that long....who knows

Sam:

Q: How serious are the Red Sox going after a young 1st baseman like Texas' Botts or Gonzalez? What about Philly's Ryan Howard?

Gordon_Edes:

All of those guys would be mighty attractive, but Sam, I think yoiu're talking off-season deals there. And don't forget young D-Backs outfielder Conor Jackson

Gordon_Edes:

Jackson is still in the minors, of course

bilcha:

Q: Why the interest in Dmitri Young? Is he really an upgrade to Millar? And what are the chances of the Sox dealing for Young?

Gordon_Edes:

Wow, u got me on that one...Never even heard his name linked to the Sox. He's got an $8 million option that vests next season...Can't see the Sox doing that one, not even sure where u heard it

i think moreso since gabe kapler coming back, sox might just try to look within and give him the start, he had a great season in 2004 picking up for trot appearing in 136 games--plus it will save money and a prospect or two
Posted
they need to find someone who can bat 5th and play either 1st or RF, not saying it has to be young but someone. trots likely out till september atleast.
Posted
yes im sure gabe kapler can fill that role he did last season which he batted under .300--an obliques strain in late july, that kind of pain is unbearable, wish him the best of luck and to get better, September does seem like the best bet--for trades I just think Sox are keen on bullpen pitchers and adding a new startin pitcher as they were already lookin at way before last night's incident

Im gonna miss Mueller a hell of a lot, team player as they come. yea god i heard a twins representative said theyre not sure if they want to give up romero for mueller who is more or less a rent-a-player, wouldnt at all call mueller that, besides betting since minnesota is close to mueller's hoemtwon of St Louis--i iw ouldnt be surprised if he were to try and get another season or 2 with teh twins before retiring
