Burnett, because I think he can be had for the least cost. I've thought all along that if we got him, he would best serve this team as a closer. He has dynamite stuff, similar to Brad Lidge.

ok if you want red sox to give up hanley ramirez or dustin pedroia for eddie, go right ahead, cuz thats only way seattle wants to deal with the sox--besides yes eddie is a great pitcher this season but he is also known to be injury prone

All things being equal (cost wise), I'd like to see the Sox go get AJ Burnett. He's young, very talented, and by far has the most potential of any of those arms. He's got ace-like stuff if he can stay healthy, and I'd much rather see the Sox trade for, then resign him to a long term deal. I still think it's much harder to find great starters than it is to find great closers.

I'm most impressed with Burnett. However, I get this strange feeling that Wagner would be the most likely to end up on the Sox and I might want it that way. I would take Wagner over Guardado because he has pitched at Houston and Philadelphia...while never having an ERA over 2.85 with the exception of that injury year. "IF" Foulke could come back and return to form after his surgery Wagner would be a GREAT replacement for Embree. Could you imagine...."back to form" Keith Foulke being set up by Mike Timlin and Billy Wagner. Thats just not fair!

While it's true that Eddie Guardado is in the AL and Wagner is in the NL, there are some other factors to consider here in comparing the two. I don't think NL/AL is really a fair comparison.

In theory, both pitchers would enter the game in a close game, late. How many pitchers do you think Wagner faces in that senario? He probably faces a pinch hitter.

Wagner pitches in Philadelpia, which is a NOTORIOUS hitters park, while Guardado pitches in Seattle... a pitcher's park. Some stats to consider:

K/9:

Wagner: 8.93

Guardado: 7.84

K/BB:

Wagner: 3.73

Guardado: 4.50

WHIP:

Wagner: 0.97

Guardado: 0.87

Groundball/Flyball ratio:

Wagner: 1.30

Guardado: 0.69

Opponents AVG/OBP/SLG:

Wagner: .197/.255/.340

Guardado: .186/.225/.310

What does this all mean? First of all, both thoese guys are NASTY. Wagner's more apt to get you a big strikeout, but Guardado gets himself in less trouble. You really couldn't go wrong with either one of these guys, but along with the better K's / 9, I like that Wagner gets more groundballs (Guardado's a flyball pitcher) and that he's used to playing in a hitter's park (and let's face it, Fenway is a hitter's park).

I voted Burnett and I stick by that. But if I had to choose between Guardado and Wagner, I'd pick Billy Wagner.

Yeah I think in the big picture I would take Burnett as well. The guy has more talent and could be the next Pedro for the Red Sox. Unfortunatly the Orioles and Blue Jays have been talking to the Marlins...both deals consisting of either Daniel Cabrera or Gustavo Chacin......Red Sox would have to bring up Bronson's name in order to get him.

Burnetts not a closer though.

BigPapiEnFuego, if you guys gt Burnett Arroyo wouldnt be able to go to the pen, he'd be in florida, any deal involving the Sox and Marlins for Burnett would involve Arroyo
