I like this signing a lot. Olerud is a better compliment for Millar than McCarty is.

He probably doesn't have all that much left in the tank, but he has been one of baseball's more underrated players of this era. And he's only a year removed from putting up decent numbers (.281/.392/.422) vs. RHP. Of course, his 2002 numbers are what we're really hoping to see (.306/.414/.517 ). Absolutely worth the gamble.

when is he supposed to get back?

I wonder if Petagine has decided to go back to Japan to play, instead of playing in the Sox farm system.

Probably the end of McCarty. (At least as a player; David this your desk...)

It seems like Theo isn't satisfied with McCarty as a late inning defensive replacement. I wish he'd go out and find a pitcher, but this is a move he can't lose with.

Ha. I like it, though I really do love McCarty, Olderdude is probably a little better than him though it will be odd not seeing McCarty on his water cooler next to Mirabelli.

this signing has very low risk/high reward potential. . .

It seems like everything is these days. I don't see a monetary value attached to the contract yet though.

sticking to the first base topic...

...Am I the only one who thinks that Millar looks much more comfortable at first this year? In the games I've seen he's done a very good job both at stopping grounders/liners and digging balls out of the dirt. Not sure we even need a defensive replacement any more, unless its a guy of Minky's caliber, which neither McCarty nor Olerud have.

...but i'll take olerud

whoever said, doesnt millar look more comfortable at first i have to agree with...His fielding is certainly capable but when he is he going to start hitting a few dingers..

I love McCarty but can see the reason for the move...

Like someone else said though, this is nothing, we need pitching..

like a new closer and someone to replace embree who sucks...and a starter or two..

i think something we are forgetting is how fortunate we really are. we have 3 guys who are almost locks as all stars every year in manny, ortiz and schilling. some teams only have one and that's because it's required that everyteam only has 1. we should be grateful that we have a great closer such as foulke. even though he hasn't been pitching too well any team in the league would love to add him to their roster.

we need to realize that we, unlike the yankees do not have an seemingly limitless budget. personally, i would like to see our guys get healthy, i think the team we are fielding is good enough to win it all, getting new players (batters) isn't my way of doing things, hence why i was never a fan of getting renteria. hopefully schilling can rest up well and miller can be strong when he returns, maybe wells too.

Yeah.. because that's sooo easy to just go out and get

Give Foulke time, he'll get back to last years form, but I do agree Embree sucks. Theo seems to love these low rsik/high reward deals, he did it with Mueller, Miller, Millar, and Ortiz basiclly and so far they've all made big impacts. I love Olerud, I'll love him even more if he hits like he did in 2002.

foulke had an 1-2-3 game today and 3 straight saves. if anything did happen we could always promote timlim (less likely) or mantei (more likely) to closer but it's not necessary. even with embree sucking our bullpen has improved from last season.

Give someone a chance and see what they can do. It's a principle that has served the Red Sox well.

With Olerud, I really think it's nice to have him available but pray we never need him. He is a massive hitter when he wants to be and did help the Yankees a lot last season.

BTW Chitalian Stallion love the quote.
