I've seen mixed opinions on the man voiced in various different threads here. For the sake of reference, here are the man's 2005 stats as of 9:53 Pm on Monday, the 25th:

2005	19	75	10	18	3	1	2	8	29	5	8	1	0	.288	.387	.240

I think this guy will end up being a good pickup, he can make spectacular plays in the field which we have seen a glimpse of so far. And he can get the clutch hit when needed. I think 1 month is a little too early to judge this guy.

Agree....at the end of the year, everyone will see just what a great pickup he was, and the key hits that he had for us. He's definitely an upgrade at the SS position after O-Cab, and with Nomar out for a while, even if Nomah is my fav. player....I have to say that Renteria is an upgrade from Nomar, too.

?. Renter?a (Bos - SS) 36 354 18/75 10 2 8 1 .240 .675

O. Cabrera (LAA - SS) 70 380 19/69 8 2 7 1 .275 .815

that's their numbers so far this season. renteria is an upgrade over cabrera, but not by as much as most people think. given a full year at fenway i think cabrera would have really put up some good numbers.

when it's all said and done i don't think renteria in fenway is that much of an upgrade over cabrera in fenway, not 2 mill per at least. but i guess we'll never know because cabrera was never given a full season in fenway.

All I can say is the guy has struggled a little but not enough to throw him into the firey hell of boston media critisism talk shows and horrible columns about him. also I have noticed he has hit in the clutch.

Renteria's last 10 games:

What's remarkable is the lack of anything remotely productive. Tack onto that the errors he's made recently, and something is not right. Renteria is a MUCH better player than this, but we're all getting impatient for him to snap out of it.

I'm very impatient with him. I think it's obviously a slump and maybe he's just getting used to his new teammates or whatever, but I hope he snaps out of it soon. He's obviously worth the money based on his previous experience, but he's not proving very worth it here. But I do like the guy and he looks like he's gonna pass out everytime he's up AB, so I just hope he starts getting better quickly.

Hrm... lots of player bashing on this forum, Bellhorn, Foulke and Rentaria.

I wonder if the Sox offense is not fundamentally screwed up in some way. Like in some little way that can be tinkered around with and fixed. Manny's numbers are down. Tek is hitting better than Ortiz. Kevin Millar looks sober at the plate and Bellhorn's strikeout to homerun ratio is siding.

To single out Rentaria for his lack of production is like complaining about the 'A' key on your keyboard being too small. Just as all the keys are the same size, there is a lack of production all around from the people we expect to be sluggers. Manny, Ortiz, Miller, Bellhorn and Rentaria are all going to show us what they can do and all we can do is wait for it to happen. And we are all going to be jubilant when it happens.

Keep in mind that Renteria has played his entire career in the NL (9 years). He is facing all new pitchers that he's never seen for the most part. Give him some time - he is a better hitter and fielder than Cabrera - who was a personal fav. of mine last year. Renteria has hits in 8 out of his last 10 games so I dont think he's doing that bad. His fielding should win him a gold glove while in Boston as well.

By the way Renteria is batting .246

Manny is batting .241

So since no one is jumping on Manny for his avg how about we let them play more than a month and a half. And yes I know Manny has more HRs and RBIs but everyone seems to be jumping on his avg. Manny is a pretty good hitter and is batting lower than Edgar.

Renterias career BA is .288 and I would expect him to be around there by the end of the season. He just needs to get on a hot streak and pad some stats.

so some people would rather have cabrera than renteria?

cabrera is betting .230 with 1 hit in his last 6 games. but cabrera is much better

none of the 3 that were swapped are really doing great right now. eckstein has the highest avg but would you have honestly signed him over renteria or cabrera? cabrera is doing slightly worse than renteria.

I disagree that Cabrera is doing all that much worse, especially considering that Renteria's playing half his games at Fenway Park. Defensively Cabrera's been superior in all areas than Edgar, and even though Cabrera's got a lower batting average, he's shown better plate discipline (more walks, less strikeouts) and has a higher slugging percentage.

I have to admit that I was one of the guys who advocated re-signing Cabrera over Renteria simply because Renteria would have come at a higher cost, but I'm also looking at the numbers the only number where Renteria's better is batting average.

I understand that Edgar's still adjusting to his new surroundings, and even though Orlando Cabrera struggled after coming to Boston last year he still hit .278 with 3 homers and 14 RBIs in his August last year (which spanned 115 at bats).

I also understand that it's a long season, and that over time Edgar Renteria has been the better player, and he will probably straighten himself out and finish the season ahead of the other two.

I would not have advised signing Eckstein, no... I was just making a statement-- he has been the best offensive player so far.

I said that he was doing slightly worse not all that much worse. He was also getting boo'd by the fans in Anaheim because of his slow start.

Renteria is batting .300 in may so far - and yes i know its only been 8 games but its still a positive sign. I think hes gonna turn it around and when he gets hot his numbers will get to his career avgs.

He will reach his career numbers this season, statistically he's a career .264 hitter in April though he was far under that number he has anexcuse joining a new team and a new league he will start to catch up.

Els, it's great to have you back so I can read these types of posts. Happy you're back hah, and that baseball website, man that was some fun times.

But back to the topic---

I just heard on the Red Sox pregame that people are already saying Renteria was the biggest free agent bust. Wow, how can people already make these statements? Very early in the season and let's not forget he's adjusting to a new goddamn place. Cut him some slack people, wow.

Posted

I think calling him a bust is going a bit too far.

He's struggled, yes. He's been a dissapointment, yes... but he's been more productive than Magglio Ordonez in his new contract!

Edgar's an easy target because of his large contract, and despite my writings that he hasn't lived up to the hype, I still pointed out that the season's young and that a little time will prove the Sox made a good move.

So much can change in half a season. Remember in July of 2004 when Javy Vazquez was the savoir of New York's rotation?!? After his horrible second half, yankee fans were calling for his head.

Like Tito said: Edgar's too good a player to keep struggling. (He was 2-5 last night, too)

Posted
so is an 11 game win streak enough for people to get off his back. I said before, like other on here, that Renteria would be fine. At least it looks like people have stopped crapping on him for the moment. Until he goes 0-5 that is
Posted
No one should be crapping on him period, as I said before he's historically a slow starter

Sizzlin,

Not sure where you get that idea that he's a slow starter. Over the past three years, he's a .290 hitter in April.

Year: AVG/OBP/SLG

2002: .284/.337/.375

2003: .337/.372/.558

2004: .293/.361/.415

3YR: .307/.357/.456

Considering that his career averages are .288/.345/.399, I wouldn't necessarily classify him as a slow starter-- unless there's something I'm not seeing. He actually looks to be a bit better than his career averages in April.

Posted
Yeah past 3 years he's a slow starter look at his total Career batting average in April is .264 and the only reason his numbers have gone up in the past three years is because he was around that STACKED Cardinals lineup.
