From today's globe:

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Curt Schilling is one of seven players invited by a US House of Representatives committee to testify under oath March 17 about steroid use in baseball.

Virginia republican Tom Davis, chair of the House Government Reform Committee, and California democrat Henry Waxman, the ranking democrat on the committee, organized the hearing. No one has been subpoenaed, according to the Associated Press, though the committee does have the power to subpoena.

"I don't know, as far as whether I will or won't [attend]," Schilling said yesterday. "I don't think I have a lot to offer on the issue to begin with, other than my opinion, which is always been what I've offered. We'll see."

The committee invited players and executives. The player panel is Schilling, Jose Canseco, Jason Giambi, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, and Frank Thomas. The executives are commissioner Bud Selig, Major League Baseball executive vice president Sandy Alderson, union executive director Donald Fehr, and Padres GM Kevin Towers.

Schilling, asked why he made the list, said, "I have some ideas. There's reasons I think, some people that I know that I'm friends with."

He didn't name names, other than to say he knows President Bush and other politicians.

After speaking with Gene Orza, the union's chief operating officer, Thursday night, Schilling believes the decision to attend will be his to make.

"[Orza said] it was up to me whether I wanted to do this or not," Schilling said. "I will talk to my lawyer and see exactly how and why and what it would involve."

Asked if any good can come of the hearing, Schilling said: "Depends what it's for. If this is a McCarthy witch hunt all over again, then no. Again, I don't know any of the specifics around what it entails and what's going on."

Schilling said the other players' decisions wouldn't affect his.

It seems that, because of the people he will be testifying with (if he does attend), Schilling is somehow implicated in all this steroid stuff. His name certainly doesn't fit with those massive sluggers, that's for sure. I can't understand why he would be asked to come to this, apart from his overwhelming integrity and passion for the game. "some people that I know that I'm friends with." Does this mean the republican leadership, or players? :(

I read that this morning too and kind of wondered... I don't put it past anyone, not even Schill to be using steroids, but I think it has more to do with his willingness to talk on and on and on and on about the subject. At least that's what I hope.

I think it has more to do with his willingness to talk as red sox rooter points out, rather than usual grunts and groins that come out of the mouths of most of the single brain cellled athletes that comrpise the big leagues particularly in new york--not to mention most of the users deny use, and the arrogant and egomanical cocksukcers like sheff claim innocence on the subject and that wouldnt help any investigation.

Schilling is articualte and in spite of his misguided politics probably able to help more than most.

Oh my prophetic soul. I knew he was on steriods. http://www.hazelnet.org/icon/shakehead.gif

Remember Giambi's 2 home runs in the 2003 ALCS? You know, that is the case why steroid abuse should be dealt with harsh, they can change the outcome of the championship.

Schilling is not on steroids. Some teams have gotten to the series on the backs of steroids. And people don't accept cheap apologies for that.

Just because they were on the Red Sox, that doesn't mean that they aren't on the roids. Now I'm not accusing anyone on the Sox specifically on being on the roids, but don't just assume that all the Red Sox were clean.

Hrmph. I had my suspicions about El Guapo, but attacking the other guy with innuendo doesn't take away from the enormity of it all. The idea that a chemically manufactured player is responsible for a World Series trip is bad enough, but to think it happened against the Sox is a real pisser. For one, the Sox victory last year was HUGE for MLB, it had more people interested in the sport than I have ever seen in my life. To think that some dude on the juice, had he not been pressured to give it up, could have stopped it from happening last year makes me think this stuff comes dangerously close to wrecking the whole sport. Baseball thrives on ups and downs, not on artificial results, and those home runs just kept a good thing from happening. Where's Old Mountain Landis when you need him?

Secondly, I don't know if you know it or not, but Yankees fans are not exactly the most humble or prideful people you will ever meet. Having to listen about those 'clutch' homeruns for like 9 months after the 2003 ALCS and then have it turn out they are Ocean Spray means weeks of my life were wasted respectfully listening to people idolize a remorseless cheater. The man needed a crutch to be clutch and we've had to hear so much it's like a spotch in the crotch - never wanted, always unfortunate and pretty stinky.

You wanna know why the curse is gone? Because things like this have Babe weeping. Recordbooks cannot be updated after the fact someone cheated, but it's not going to be the same until someone sets the record straight.

Were I a fan of ARod's team, I would seriously think about some recompense on to make up for all the hot air. Banners for 2003 should be removed from the stadium and the recordbooks should be updated with an asterisk. Steinbrenner should be reduced to half-ass-kissing-rations for a day and have to apologize for this farce of supremacy his pock marked, wad-jawed sluggers have going on. Jeter should keep looking cool and try to bring some respect back to that organization because it's so bad I can't even fake being impressed by the pinstripes any more.

i'm curious...what happens if schilling was on steroids? (this is PURELY hypothetical, but at this point i put it past no one) would that change your (im talking to everyone here) opinion on him? would that affect the way u view this last season? just wondering, i'd really like to hear what u guys have to say about this

No. Should I?

For that matter, would you?

M

It happend two years ago. You need to see a doctor if 2 years and a WS win can't help you move on.

Yanksin2010, what do you think about Barry Bonds?

Should we move on from that?

They're not going to go back and do it all over again. There was a crucial homer by todd walker in one of the games that was actually foul, should we re do that?

I agree but I am more inclined, to forgive a cheater who apoligizes and talks responsibility for cheating. Giambi is a man in my book, and not a lying cheating douche bag like bonds and sheff--poeple can argue all day long about steriods but they are performance enhancing drugs and illegal in the major leagues, period.

Using them is cheating Bonds is a cheater his records thus have been achieved by cheating and shouldn't count.

If schilling was taking them I'd like to think I would be just as brutual about it, and attempt (I said attempt) to be objective.

I don't think they're accusing Schilling of using roids, they just know that he is a player who like to speak his mind and give his opinion. Of course the Yanks fans are having a ball with this.

Schilling is in the same boat as Sheff now. Palmerio, Sheffield, Canseco, Giambi, McGwire and Curt Schilling were asked by MLB to report to a March 17th hearing about steroids.

If you say so.

I don't think it's anything serious. Again, going back to my question, why isn't Sheffield and Bonds on the list? I think it's more to find out about steriods in Baseball than accusing the subpoenaed players.

Yeah, right. I will get past it after someone helps me string up Giambi. It may just be a game, but it's one into which I invest a lot of time and energy. I forgive slowly.

Why do you love people who cheat so much?

I forgive someone who cheats when they have the nuggets to admit it. Giambi is a man, and deserves credit for taking responsibility for his cheating..even if it was only becasue they outed him with his grand jury testimony-

I would like to see them string up bonds and sheff becasue they cheat and hide behind lies to cover it.

Bonds is the biggest egomanical ******* I ever seen--and that is a long list especially among athletes.

I hope he doesnt break any more records, becasue he doesnt deserve them. he's a piece of s***, he even had the yum-yum's to play the poor balck guy card...his f***ing father was a major leaguer-I doubt very much Barry grew up in the ghetto or even went there.

string him up... find a way to forgive giambi...I know he's yankee but in spite of that he was a man about it.

It's a called forgiveness. Haven't you ever heard the philsophy that once a man admits he is wrong, he is immediately forgiven for all wrongdoings? He had the balls to admit it, and I respect that.

HAHAHAHAAHAHA. You're such a clown. He didn't admit s***. We never wouldn't know this if he wasn't under oath and it wasn't leaked.

BTK needs a good lawyer. You should get in touch with him.

Hahaha. I also fixed the funny mistake, because I doubt a serial murderer needs someone to lay bricks.
