This should get interesting.....the Astros offered Clemens $13.5M, I follow the Astros and I know that I don't think the 'stros are going to put out an offer any higher.

This is now the highest figure ever submitted for arbitration. (The highest figure before this was $18.5M by Derek Jeter in 2001) Is Clemens worth it? Discuss amongst yourselves.

He's just doing it so that the midpoint between his offer and the 'stro's offer comes out to something he wants. It may end up being the biggest pitcher contract ever, but it certainly won't be 22 mil. Maybe 18.

clemens won't get anything above 15. not worth it imo.

I agree with John here. Clemens on a 1 year deal is not worth more than $15 million... which means he probably won't get more than $15 in arbritration.

How can he make more than Pedro? Or Randy Johnson?

I agree with everyone as far as the amount is too much, but Clemens led the Astros to their first ever NLCS and had a W-L record of 18-4 with an ERA just shy of three (2.98)....Randy Johnson was 16-14 with an ERA of 2.60 (although you can argue the fact that he didn't have anyone behind him to help out). As far as Petey goes, Clemens clearly had a better year.....Pedro had his worst year in a Sox uniform this last year (having an ERA just under four) and he seems to not have much left.

In my opinion right now Clemens is the better player out of the three. Think about it....Clemens was an All-Star and the National League Cy-Young winner.

johnson was absolutely ROBBED of the cy young last year. it's almost entirely based on wins, i guess that's appropriate because CY is mainly known for the amount of wins he had.

they definately need a new pitcher award. for all around best pitcher, not crap like wins.

Again, I agree with John here. Johnson outpitched Clemens (and had better numbers in every single pitching category BUT W-L, which is so dependant on the team surrounding him that it shouldn't even be counted) in 2004.

Also, Clemens pitched in the National League. His last 2 years in the AL were a lot closer to Pedro's 2004 than Clemens' 2004. If I had to rank those 3 for potential 2005 performance:

Johnson

Martinez

Clemens

Clemens is certainly in the same class as Randy and Pedro, but he certainly (in my opinion) doesn't deserve more money than they do.

the astros are absolutely retarted. clemens outsmarted them. he know they couldn't afford beltran and once he didn't' take all that money clemens was there to sweep it up.

18 mill for a 3 era pitcher in the NL is too much money. cy young or no cy young, 18 mill for a pitcher when you won't even win your division is stupid.

I want you all to bow down to me. I pinned clemens' intentions and I nailed down his salary. B)

The only reason he asked for 22 mill was not because he wanted that much. But he knew that since Johnson got 16 he would probably get around in between, 18.
