Padres acquire OF Roberts from Red Sox for OF Payton, IF Vazquez

I like this trade even though it is hard to see the speedy roberts go :(

I will never forget you, you are our savior ,good luck in san diego!

I really liked Roberts.

I'm afraid that Payton was a product of Coors. Probably not a bad platooner with Trot, but I think Kapler would've been better.

Roberts was here for just a short time but it was absolutely perfect. Without a doubt his stolen base in Game 4 of the ALCS kept the Sox alive and sparked the 8 game winning streak. After the trade in July there were postings here about what he could do the Sox and it was all true. I hope he does well in S.D.

I'm just surprised we got all that in return for Dave Roberts. He was going to get traded anyway, he wanted to become a regular and the Red Sox granted him that opportunity.

still, it would have been nice to keep roberts. but payton is good and vasquez is a good utility infielder thats probably better than pokey so i think that theo did a goo djob with this trade. roberts deserved this oppertunity.

noooooooo.

Roberts was the perfect backup outfielder.

I have a hard time believing this trade is going to happen WITHOUT some other trades in the works. Jay Payton is more of an everyday guy.... won't he be pissed to be splitting time with Nixon?

This might have deeper implications.... like Manny to the Mets?

Stay tuned.

I'd look for Millar or Mank to go next...

They might too, but right now the Red Sox have 4 outfielders who are considered everyday players:

Ramirez

Damon

Nixon

Payton

Will Payton accept being a bench player?

Well i'm glad about this trade. Roberts will get his wish to start and play in his hometown. I wish him luck. I'm hoping payton doesn't mind starting. Maybe Nixon will get traded....

Hey you never know it could happen. People said pavanoverated was coming to Boston, but no where did he go, o yeah can i get the dark side?

I think Payton will play against lefties and I haven't really heard anything about him complaining about playing time ever. Another plus about Payton he went to Georgia Tech and I believe he played with Varitek so that could help bring Tek back.

You're kidding me right? Nixon isn't going ANYWHERE.

Nixon better not be traded.

I like the idea of playing Payton vs Lefties (basically taking over for Kapler), but I really liked the idea of having Roberts on the bench. Will the Red Sox persue a replacement for Dave?

Perhaps Minky or Millar could be dealt for somoene fast.

Come playoff time the Sox will miss having Dave Roberts. His appearance on the scene for us last year appears now to have been a short but historic occurence. He was a key and added a strategic element that we are not accustomed to having.

This trade was going to be done because, to the Sox credit, Roberts wants to start and they wanted to find a place for him to do so. Now he goes home to do so. But this is a loss for us. Jay Payton won't bring to the table what Roberts did...nor Kapler I think. But he is serviceable with decent numbers overall and good speed to cover ground defensively.

We also get a utility infielder in Vazquez. Played all 4 positions last year. Seems to be a steady fielder with only 1 error. Lefty batter...can't steal bases.

I dunno. At a glance it seems like this put a few capable bodies in place when a Sox outfielder or infielder needs a break.

Payton makes 1.5mil. Vazquez 342k. I suppose they're relatively low-cost if nothing else.

The 21-year-old Pauley appeared in 27 games - 26 starts - at Class A Lake Elsinore, going 7-12 with a 4.17 ERA. He has a career mark of 24-29 with a 3.97 ERA over four minor league seasons.

Jay Payton: Hitting

Payton opened the season hitting second, but really came on strong when he was moved to the No. 6 slot in the order in the second half. Hitting down in the order allowed Payton to be aggressive, which he prefers. Payton is a line-drive hitter who is served well by the open gaps at Coors Field. He likes the fastball. When he goes into a funk, it's because the opposition is keeping him off-stride with offspeed and breaking pitches. He has the type of speed a manager would be tempted to put at the top of the order, but he doesn't work counts and doesn't steal bases.

Ramon Vazquez: Hitting

With his inside-out swing, Vazquez prefers to guide the ball to the opposite field and use his speed to get extra bases on balls that find the seams of the outfield defense. He's a fairly disciplined hitter, rarely offering at balls out of the zone, and he rarely swings and misses. More than a third of his strikeouts come on called strikes, well above the MLB average. He looks outside and makes solid contact on just about anything on the outer half. Not surprisingly, fastballs inside give him the most trouble. He is fairly helpless against lefthanded pitching, making him more of a platoon player than a regular. He'll draw some walks and is a viable option as a leadoff hitter.

I think this is a great trade and it looks like we got two quality bench players out of this. And Yankeessuck013's quote makes Vazquez and Payton sound like they have enough speed to steal bases. If they do not supply the speed Roberts did and we need a speedster on the bench we can sign a cheap option on the market. I will, however, miss Roberts a lot.
