Or how about August 29th, 2000? Pedro has had a boatload of amazing performances.

If Pedro only had 1999-2000 in a Red Sox uniform, he already would've been half way to the Red Sox record for double-digit strikeout games that it took Clemens 13 seasons to accumulate.

Just stupid.

(Of course, he does hold the record now.)

I don't remember the date of the game I went to but it was some time in the 2003 season. It was the game that Johnny Damon made his best catch ever when he climbed the Bob's sign on the Green Monster. Best catch I've ever seen but anyway, in that game, Pedro pitched a complete game for a gem. If anyone remembers the date or has the stats post them please.

Pedro is the best pitcher I've ever seen. Pre-'01 Pedro was simply mystifying. He shall be missed, but I'm glad we won't have to be paying his medical bills from now on.

I'm seriously devastated that he tore his rotator cuff.

HE WAS UNBELIEVABLE!!

We were robbed... I never had so much fun in my life watching baseball than when I got to see Pedro in his prime. Totally overpowering and in command of each pitch.

I would pay huge amounts of money for full recording of some of those old games... I mean I have the 17 strikeout vs. MFY, the '99 ALDS, the Pedro/Rocket duel... I just want some of those "regular" old starts where he struck out 15 against Seattle on a Tuesday night at Fenway.

OH OH the game I went to was versus the Angels if that helps.

You're talking about August 6th, 2003. A good game, no doubt, but not one of Pedro's "most amazing ever".

I'm pretty sure that's but I could have sworn he was facing Ramon Ortiz as a starter but maybe not. Are you sure that's the game that Johnny made the phenomonal catch?

Pedro goes the distance, against the Angels in 2003. I think yes.

As for '99 ALDS Bosox Rule, amen. That was absolutely the most dominant thing I have ever seen. I forgot how badly Sabe got rocked in that game. :(

OK. This stops now.

I'm gonna break down or somethin. :(

I'd like to see a starting pitcher in the history of the game... who struck out 189 batters over a span of 15 consecutive regular-season starts as Pedro did from August '99 to May '00.

You won't find one, because nobody ever had nastier stuff. Ever.

If you're one of those fans who knew Pedro was awesome but kind of took it for granted while he was in his prime and are now regretting it a bit, I'd turn you over to Minnesota Twins lefty Johan Santana for literally, probably the closest thing you'll ever see to what Pedro used to be. He may not throw 97 mph, but he's currently got the best change-up in baseball with a wicked slider to go with.

No doubt everybody knows who he is, but I'd recommend watching a little closer if you own a Directv, he's going to be one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball history. No joke.

For some reason I'm not a big fan of Santana.

I find Randy Johnson more exciting to watch. I just can't get into a Johan game. I loved watching games when Pedro showed a few flashes of 1997-2003 Pedro, like his CG SHO vs. TB this past August, I was there.

In all honesty, I see Johan coming back to Earth.

I'm expecting 18-8, 3.10, 235 K this year.

negative, i don't buy it at all. santana is overrated imo. he won't be able to put up those numbers again. he won't continu that 13-0 win streak with a sub 2 era. he wishes he was pedro with a left throwing arm

santana is good, but not sub 2.5 good, not even sub 2.7 good (not over a span of a whole season at least). i predict a 3-3.5 era next season while leading the al in k's (unless rj moves).

He's only going to turn 26 this spring training and he's already Pedro-like, whether you want to believe it or not.

Not even Pedro was able to have 21 or 22 consecutive quality starts.

christ dude, look at the teams he played, outside of boston (1), yankees (2), angels (1) and baltimore (1) the other teams had very little offensive force.

Well..... if Pedro could last longer into games, Timlin wouldn't have the chance to blow it? Look, this whole "we already miss Pedro/he was the best EVERRR" thing is great and all, but you all should have started this thread after 2002.

Yeah, and the results were all pretty much the same. It isn't like Pedro didn't beat up on the likes of the weaker offensive teams.

Who would you have him face?

As for their match-up, here are the lines:

Pedro: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 11 K

Johan: 8 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 12 K

Here's a pretty nice "Thanks Pedro" reply from BGrif21125 from SOSH:

I was born in 1980, and the Red Sox were the first team I really followed. I grew up rooting for Roger, Boggs, and so on, until 1994 when the strike came and I began focusing on other sports. From 1995-1997 I can honestly say I didnt watch one baseball game from start to finish.

In April 1998 I came home from school and turned on the opening day game just in time to see the Sox score 7 in the 9th and win on Mo's grand slam. I fugured I might as well tune in to the next day's game since this new pitcher named Pedro, who'd I never seen pitch, was going to be on the mound at Fenway for the first time. The next afternoon I sat mesmirized in front of my tv as I watched the greatest pitcher of my lifetime for the first time. I remember early in that game, Pedro fell behind Griffey 3-0, and then proceeded to throw three changeups in a row, with griffey swinging all 3 times and looking like a little leaguer every single time. I still to this day swear his bat never got within 3 feet of making contact.

Within 24 hours I had gone from someone who hardly cared about baseball to someone who had a baseball hero. For the next 7 years I can honestly say I never missed a Pedro start. If i couldnt be there to watch it, the VCR was set to record it. Thats what made Pedro great, the feeling that you couldnt afford to miss any of his starts, because you risked the chance of missing history. To this day, there has never been anything more exciting to witness than Pedro at Fenway in 1999 and 2000, when 33,000 people would be on their feet for 9 innings, chanting "Pedro" so loudly that you could barely even hear the announcers. I've had the chance to see plenty of very good pitchers, a few great pitchers (Clemens, Johnson), but only one pitcher who was truly transcendent. Clemens can have his Cy Youngs, and Johnson can have his Cys and his perfect game, because anyone who got the chance to see Pedro knows he reached a level that those two or anyone else can only dream of. I hope Pedro goes to the Mets and wins 4 Cy Youngs, but whatever he does, it'll never change what he did here. Money may have been his major motivation these past few weeks, but it wasnt about money when he begged Jimy Williams for the chance to stare down a 1,000 run offense with a hurt shoulder in game 5 in 1999, and it wasnt about money when he stared Grady in the eyes and said he could go on despite having an arm that must have felt like it was going to fall off. I understand why the Sox offered him what they did, but it doesnt change the fact that this team will simply not be as interesting to watch without History on the mound every five days. I hope to live several more decades, but I know that I have already seen the greatest pitcher of my lifetime, and for 7 years he pitched for my team. So...

Thanks for the 1999 all-star game, when you showed the whole world what we

already knew, that you were the greatest in the world at what you did.

Thanks for September 10, 1999, the greatest pitching performance I have ever seen, the only time I have ever seen a Yankee lineup go up to the plate knowing they were going to strikeout, but simply hoping they wouldnt look foolish in the process.

Thanks for showing that even at 32 years old, at about 75% of your former self, you could still shutdown a roided-out, cheating Barry Bonds, supposedly the greatest hitter ever. Imagine what you would have done to him in your prime.

Thanks for throwing one under Einar Diaz's chin, then striking him out and laughing at him.

Thanks for drilling Gerald Williams and then embarassing 24 hitters in a row.

Thanks for walking into the most hostile environment imaginable with a tired arm in Game 7 and allowing only two runs through seven innings, the performance that shouldve gotten statues built for you in Boston.
