Thanks, Pedro.

Thanks for 1999 and 2000. The two best seasons I've ever seen pitched. Thanks for 2002 and 2003, two other exceptional years. And 1998, too.

Thanks for piling up the strikeouts. Thanks for that awesome changeup, that hard roundhouse curve, and that wonderful fastball.

Thanks for twirling around in the air swinging your leg around on a 2-strike pitch - it reminded me of Bob Gibson.

Thanks for working quickly. Thanks for the jheri curl and the loose cannon mouth that made me laugh more than once.

Thanks for hanging out with Ted Williams after the All Star Game.

Thanks for coming out in Game 7 and pitching. Even if you didn't pitch well, it showed balls to the Yankees that many men would never attempt.

Thanks for all the wonderful playoff games you pitched. Game 5 in 1999. Game 3 in 1999. Game 5 in 2003. Game 2 of 2004 (ALDS). Game 3 of 2004.

Exactly. Let's not get all Roger Clemens with Pedro. His years with us were the best any pitcher has ever pitched, and thats saying something. I wish him success in New York, provided it's only with the Mets and not against us.

are we forgetting to thank pedro for that 17K 1 hit game against the yankees and roger clemens in 99 that helped us clinch the wildcard.

john

p.s.- i love you pedro. i hope you beat up those NL batters like you did to the AL batters all these years.

Great numbers. I actually believe Pedro's K/9 was 13.20 in 1999 and it was Randy Johnson who had the 13.41 in 2001, but rather than trying to nitpick I'm using that to say that I believe Pedro's mark and season is far more impressive given that he did it in the AL and Johnson the NL.

In '99, Pedro struck out 313 batters in just 213.1 IP with 19 double-digit strikeout games and tied the major league record (N. Ryan) for games with 15 or more strikeouts (6) in a single-season. Relative to the league average, Pedro's K/9 that season was the most impressive ever.

As mentioned, the strikeout-to-walk ratios during '99-'00... I think something like 313 to 37 in 1999 (8.45) and 284 to 32 in 2000 (8.88). Or the 0.74 WHIP in 2000 - another single-season record.

Just silly. I'm going to miss this guy so much.

And while we are thanking him for great memories, let's not forget his 12-strikeout CG shutout of the Mariners in his Fenway debut in 1998.

You may not win as many games playing for the Metropolitans, but I look forward to see you grind that career ERA back down to the 2.5 range it was before the 2004 season.

I made a mistake, you're right. I was thinking 13.41 for Randy at the time, I didn't think it was Pedro.

Pedro had 313 K's in 213.3 innings, which comes out at 13.21.

I am very sad to see Pedro go, and I hope he tears it up in the NL. He'll dominate, and we can only hope we don't have to face one of the most dominating pitchers ever next year. Great post.

Pedro - you the man.

I'm liking this move for a career Pedro standpoint.

His career ERA will go down, ERA+ up, and rate stats up.

Can you imagine if Pedro had been pitching in the NL during his prime? Holy s***.

He had a 1.74 ERA in the AMERICAN LEAGUE where the average pitcher that particular year was around 4.92.

Oh by the way, Pedro passed his physical today. Yup, the shoulder was so bad and the Sox were so tired of his "antics" that they threw 40.5 million dollars at him.

If Pedro pitched for the Mets in 2000 (where lgERA in that stadium was 4.36) his ERA would've come out at 1.53.

If he was a 1968 Cardinal with the mound as high as it was in the lgERA in that stadium was 2.90, Pedro's 2000 ERA would've come out at 1.02.

it's sad how people took pedro for granted.. it's all dan s*****'s fault. all that garbage he wrote about pedro. everytime i read it wanted to punch him in the face. even when i was just a teenager.

the man knows nothing about baseball, he's a friggan reporter. i hate him so bad.

Before the lovefest is over, I can't let this go unnoticed.

They just showed Tim Kirkjian's piece on Pedro going to the Mets on ESPNews and showed a boatload of punchados dating back from 1998-2000... when you haven't watched the old stuff in awhile you kind of forget how cool he used to look when he'd smoke somebody.

They'll most likely show it again throughout the night, watch it and you'll remember what I'm talking about. The arm angles he came at hitters with are just filthy... a real sicko to be sure.

Any chance of this guy calling the Yankees his daddies?

Top 5 Pedro Martinez Starts

1. June 3, 1995 vs. the San Diego Padres.

9 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks 10 strikeouts.

Pedro took a perfect game into the 10th, and ended up winning the game, 1-0.

Hard to rate this ahead of #2, but he did take a PERFECT GAME into the 10th. Should count as one.

2. September 10, 1999 vs. the New York Yankees

9 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 0 walks, 17 strikeouts

Pedro continued his unbelievable 1999 success by improving his record to 21-4, while limiting the Yankees to 1 hit, a Chili Davis HR. May have gone down as THE best single-game pitching performance, and most memorable had it not been for that HR.

3. May 28, 2000 vs. the New York Yankees

9 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts

One of the greatest pitchers duels of all-time. Cy Young vs. Cy Old. Pedro Martinez vs. Roger Clemens. Both pitchers went the distance, with Pedro getting the win. Clemens' line on the night was 9 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, and 13 strikeouts.

4. July 13, 1999 vs. the National League All-Stars

2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 5 strikeouts

If you EVER want to watch vintage Pedro, at his absolute best, this is the game to dig up and watch. This was the possibly the filthiest stuff Martinez ever brought with him. Pedro struck out 5 out of 6 batters, it may have been 5 had Ivan Rodriguez no throwing out a runner on a strike-em-out-throw-emo-ut. Pedro struck out Larry Walker, Barry Larkin, and Sammy Sosa to start the game. He then struck out Mark McGwire to start the second, Matt Williams reached on an error, and Pedro struck out Jeff Bagwell while Ivan threw out Williams. Oh, and it was at FENWAY with Ted Williams in the stadium.

5. October 26, 2004 vs. the St. Louis Cardinals

7 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts

Pedro's last start in a Boston Red Sox uniform. He retired the last 14 batters he faced and completed 75% of the ultimate goal, which was reached the next night.

Pedro, we know what hat you are taking to Cooperstown with you, and enjoy great success with the Mets. You will no doubt return to being "PEDRO!" and bring home atleast your second NL Cy Young Award.

Anybody feel free to continue with starts 6-10.

Honorable mention: May 6th, 2000. My Bar Mitzvah. :D This was a game we should have won. I watched it from the top of the Pru through binoculars. He was dominant.

Box Score:

PITCHING

Tampa Bay Devil Rays IP H HR R ER BB K
Trachsel W(2-2) 9 3 0 0 0 3 11

Boston Red Sox IP H HR R ER BB K
P. Martinez L(5-1) 9 6 0 1 1 1 17

Ironically, schilling also pitched a gem of a game, with a complete game shutout for the phillies on the same day.

We'll miss you pedro.

Look on the bright side guys, the mets hate the yankees almost more than us so he'll still be a yankee hater. :D
