I would hate this deal as a Red Sox fan.

 

I am one of the biggest Manny Ramirez bashers on the planet, but I don't like this deal at all.

 

Piazza is NOT good defensively behind the plate.

Piazza hasn't played a lot of first base.

Ramirez is younger.

Ramirez is capable of playing the outfield.

 

The Red Sox would essentially be trading a below average defensive OF and one of the top hitters in the game for a decent hitter with no position, making him a DH. The Red Sox already have Ortiz who is a DH.

 

The major questions:

Where would Piazza play? Please don't say catcher.

Who would play left field?

However....if they had taken back Piazza.... great trade, would help out your chances of winning mroe than 90 games, certainly

Uh... what are you talking about? The Sox almost always win more than 90 games. They won, what, 96 (just off the top of my head) this last year. You know as well as I do that Piazza wouldn't change that.

It would, sure, but Theo would then use that payroll flexibility to gain additional help for the team. Besides, as good as Manny is, we know his defense isn't very good. A better defensive LF would save some of the wins that losing Manny would cost, and the other upgrades would help recoup much of the rest. Sure, they might not win 98, but they'd still win more than 90.

Guys this is simple.

 

Manny is a top 3 hitter in the world.

Piazza sucks.

but the point of the trade would be that for the extra money you gain from getting rid of manny's contract you can go out and get 2 VERY good players (drew and beltre)... granted they are both off the market but thats y this isn't gunna happen anymore... the moral is piazza drew and beltre>manny and salaries are equal... thats y theo would do this

Of course, Minaya was also willing to throw in some prospects to make this trade, according to several sources. What I heard at one point was Manny for Floyd and basically the entire Mets farm system. I have to say, I would have done that in a heartbeat.
