The Globe said today that it was a 2 year deal worth 2.5 Million per year with a signing bonus of 3 Million. He could also earn up to 5 million more based on incentives.

I doubt we would trade him. He is only 19 or 20 and Edgar, if anything, will only be here for 3-4 years. I would think we would trade Renteria if anyone by 2007 for Hanley.

Wells is the replacement for Derek Lowe. If we cannot sign Pedro then Pavano is his replacement. Mantei is supposed to be the replacement for Williamson.

 

The best part about signing Wells is that he is a lefty, has playoff experience, and he was cheap enough that the Red Sox will go after Edgar Renteria to replace Orlando Cabrera. Sounds good to me. Now we just need to resign Varitek. I highly doubt the Red Sox will get Martinez and Pavano even though Pavano has made no secret he would love to play with Curt Schilling.

I think they will give him 9 mil but I don't think they'll give him a no-trade clause. Remember he becomes a 10-5 player in 2 years so he will be getting the no-trade clause any way, so I wouldn't overreact about a no-trade clause.

I hope Well works out, i looked over his stats over the past few years, not to bad, but he is in his 40's. I think the 2 year deal with us may be the last for him in MLB.

 

He pitched below his carrer ERA (4.03) last year with a 3.37 ERA in 31 starts and was 12-8.

sara- you're obviously still upset because i called you out on hating on pedro and giving nothing but love to tek.

 

lets get some facts straight. this is a discussion board. where people TALK and state what they think is going to happen. i'm obviously not theo epstein and what i say obviously does not change who the sox do or do not sign. i don't know who really is on the hunt for pavano but i'm sure the sox management knows a lot more, therefore they went after someone like wells. like i stated, "IMO" that means, in my opinion. do you know what an opinion is? here, i'll help you out:

if you COULD read, you would see that i said that wells had "LIKE" (the rest of my sentence). that means that i did not check up his exact stats but i had a good estimate. you do know what estimate means right?

 

as for tek. i think people are getting the wrong impression of me, thinking i'm some sort of tek hater. i've been cheering for tek since he came over from seattle with lowe. that's a pretty damn long time. i love him, but he IS, on the decline. with the exception of 2001, the year he injured his elbow tek has compiled more and more K's each year where his other numbers have been pretty consistant.

If you watch sox games and watch tek play you'll see that he's very much of a bad pitcher hitter. i'm not saying he's a bad hitter, i'm saying that his success is mainly from poor pitchers. against most above par pitching tek K's. Not only that his bat speed has decreased every year. toward the end of the season teks numbers get worse and worse.

 

3-year splits by month (OPS - K's - RBI's):

 

March: 1.500, 1, 0

April: .859, 40, 32

May: .788, 53, 40

June: .822, 57, 30

July: .885, 59, 46

August: .850, 65, 48

September: .721, 50, 23

October: .143, 2, 0

 

dropping off at the end of the season is probably the worst thing. overpaying for an AGING catcher is the worst move red sox management could make. i could see signing tek at a reasonable price, but 9 mill per? no way. there is no need to sign an aging catcher that is on his decline when there is basically a carbon copy of him that will be ready in about 2 years (shoppach).

 

on paper it doesn't show that tek is on the decline, other than K's. i guess i'll have to make an arguement for it. Look at teks 04 numbers, do you really think they are going to get any better than that? i honestly don't, not at his age, not at the position he's playing. the pressure on his knees will catch up to him, age will catch up to him. that's why i believe he has no where to go, but down.

good point. but what if shoppach is ready by 05 and we need another SP to push for the playoffs? it is possible that one of our starters could get injured. what if tek shows that he's on the decline immediately. but then again, those are all what ifs.

 

we would also have to give manny and trot a no trade. i honestly don't see the team trading manny anyways, nor would i want to see the team trade trot. not at his salary (4.5-6 a year). i think he only made 4.5 this year. mill that is.

 

but the point is that you would have to give them a NTC, therefore making them untradable. you really don't want too many of those on your team no matter how you look at it.

I still don't see how he is on the decline because if you look at all his major statistics (BA, OBP, Slugging and OPS) all but his slugging has gone up over the past 3 years. We really don't need Varitek to have great HR and RBI numbers because that is what Manny and Ortiz are here for.

tek can't have great rbi or HR numbers. he doesn't have the power, nor does he have the ability to.

 

he's also insanely terrible on the road, compared to at home:

look at his numbers against teams with good pitching. disregard a few of the teams after atlanta. it is pretty clear that tek his for better average against teams with poorer pitching (DUHH). yeah that's obvious, but his dropoff is much greater than most guys that bat .300. he'll bat .350 against teams like KC who have no pitching and bat .228 and .194 against teams that have good pitching such as NYY and ATL.

 

i don't really know how you guys can say tek is not on his decline, do you think he can/will have a better year than the one he has had this past year?
