Espnews is the discredible source. Steve Phillips had originally said that they had agreed to terms. 10 minutes later he retracted that statement and said that we had offered him a contract. Espnews even had that breaking news thing in the lower right hand corner.

Well, that's the question, huh. I imagine Wells will want around 4-5 million, since 2004 was solid. I think the Sox will still have enough room under the luxury tax line, but it'll leave little breathing room if they do sign Pavano.

I think the reason they would sign Wells is because they aren't planning on getting Pavano. I heard that another team guaranteed him 5 years(most likely the Yankees), which is something the Red Sox don't want to do.

so there is NO chance of signing pavano?

If they go out and sign Wells, I'd take it as them throwing the towel in on the Pavano Cup. I can't see them signing Petey, Pavano, AND Wells, can you?

He's been pitching very well at Fenway recently.

His 3 year splits at Fenway are: 37 innings, 2.19 ERA, 2-0 record, including a duel with Pedro Martinez this year. He caught Pedro at a bad time because Pedro threw 8 innings of 1 hit, 0 run, 8 strikeout ball.

According to Pavano's agent he is expected to make his decision in the next day or 2. There have been rumors that he has received a 5 year offer from the Tigers and another offer from Baltimore, but Peter Gammons reports that Pavano has limited the teams to the Red Sox, Yankees and Mariners.

Wells did pitch a good game this year at Fenway against the Sox in 2004, but still this is a "bargain basement" signing for one year and I think it does mean they can't get Pavano, especially with Pedro coming back. I hate to see this team patch together a roster to defend a world title. They had better reel in Tek now and settle the shortstop position.
