Martinez meets with Mets GM in Dominican Republic

By ENRIQUE ROJAS, Associated Press Writer

November 27, 2004

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- Free agent Pedro Martinez met with the general manager of the New York Mets in his home country, a month after helping the Boston Red Sox win their first World Series title since 1918, a baseball source told The Associated Press.

The star pitcher had dinner with Omar Minaya in Santo Domingo on Thursday night, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Reached Saturday in the Dominican Republic, Minaya declined comment. Minaya, who like Martinez is Dominican, arrived on Wednesday with his wife to spend the holiday weekend with friends and family.

The meeting is the second time this offseason that the free-agent pitcher has met with an official from a New York team. Earlier this month, Martinez and his agents met with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and several other team officials at the club's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla.

Martinez met with Boston Red Sox officials the next day in Fort Myers, Fla.

Martinez has gone 117-37 for Boston from 1998-2004, winning the AL Cy Young Award in 1999 and 2000. After beating St. Louis in Game 3 of the World Series, he acknowledged it could have been his final appearance for Boston.

Martinez is 182-76 with a 2.76 ERA in 13 seasons with Los Angeles, Montreal and Boston.

Last season, Boston general manager Theo Epstein had Thanksgiving dinner at Curt Schilling's home outside Phoenix while trying to persuade the pitcher to accept a trade to the Red Sox.

What do I think? Who knows. I still firmly believe Pedro will be returning to the Sox with their 3 year offer.

Was minyana the GM when pedro was with the expos?

No. Minaya took over after the MLB took over ownership of the Expos, which was after the Pedro Martinez trade (I think)

The Mets have reportedly offered Pedro Martinez 3 years, $37.5 million

This is better than the Red Sox offer of 2 years with an optional third year, but not by much. The only difference I see is that the 3rd year is guaranteed. I think the money is the same.

I think the Red Sox should match this offer and see how Pedro reacts.

But Pedro would also be playing for the mets. This isnt a decent team we're talking about. Is a coupla million dollars, if that, worth playing for a team that will have trouble going .500?

Reports are that there is also an option for a 4th year. I don't think the Sox should budge and see if Pedro walks. He's not worth this kind of money anymore.

Personally, I think this would be good for Pedro (as if anyone cares about that). Going to the NL should help him remain competative for a while longer. If he were smart though, he'd play this into a bidding war with St. Louis then go there. He'd be in a warmer climate than NY, and he'd have a killer lineup behind him.

Anyway, if you stick a gun to my head, MAYBE I'd consider offering Pedro a 3rd year..... but now that I think about it. Nah. Let him go.

If I were the Sox, I'd guarantee him that 3rd year, but NO WAY I'm going with a 4th year. With Martinez' health history, and the fact that he'd be 37 and making $13 million.... Not smart. Look at Kevin Brown. He's virtually untradable at $15 million and a huge waste of money.

I say match the 3-year offer, and if he declines, go after Brad Radke, and/or Pavano.

I wouldn't even guarentee that 3rd year, he's an old pitcher with a lack of a fastball. He let up 27 HR's this year, and he's in a decline. I just leave what our offer is, take the offer equivalent to Schilling or leave it.

How's this look?

pedro is a greedy, spoiled f*** face..I hope we get him back.

it's funny, you bash pedro like there is no tomorrow but i have yet to see you say ANYTHING about tek.

you know, tek and that 5 year 50 mill deal he's seeking. oh yeah, he wants a NO TRADE CLAUSE too.

god forbid a 3 time cy young pitcher that has a career era of 2.72 ask for more than 2 years.

john

p.s.- i see the sox matching 3 years with a 4th year club option.

There's no 4th year coming from Theo, even as an option. If the Mets want to spend the dough then we have to let Pedro go. There are still plenty of good pitchers out there for the cash the Sox will save.

Guys, think, this isnt all that bad. I would rather him go to the Mets than overpaying him to stay or him going to the Yankees. I want him to stay, but if he doesnt, he better choose the Mets...

It was funny for a second, YesZir and I got a good laugh on AIM about it...except that we had to move EVERY ONE of his posts. With the exception of the intro post.
