beltre and ordonez would be bad signs. where would be put nixon, or manny, or damon? if we got ordonez.

betre would be stupid, we don't need more offence, pitching wins. didn't the yankees teach you that allready?

sign pedro, sign pavano, sign milton. we don't need more offence.

He thinks hes Nomar or something...

Hahaha, too true.

And was this even confirmed? Isn't it just a rumor?

Tek is clearly the top priority.

After him comes Pedro and I think after what happened the Sox need to make a legit offer to him, along with the assurances that he will be immortalized as a Sox legend if he plays out his career in Boston.

Lowe unfortunately, I think will leave. His up and down seaosn does not justify big money, especially when we saw how he can pitch when his head is in the game. Still, he is a solid pitcher who does not get a sore arm.

To take Lowe's place, I'd like to see Brad Radke from the Twins.

Cabrera is an interesting situation. Already making 6 mill, how much will he demand to stay? He is not an elite shortstop, but proved to be reliable. I say the Sox go maybe just a little more than the 6 mill to keep him.

any chance at all the randy johnson will come to boston to be with schills?

I certainly wouldn't want him. He's getting up there in years, getting fragile, and not as good as Schilling. I think we should stick with Pedro.

what would be the chance of resigning Pedro?!??!?!

heres some other rumors I have heard:

At the start of business on Nov. 11, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner will be free to make Pedro Martinez his first offer, the Orioles can float some figures toward Derek Lowe, and the Los Angeles Dodgers can start courting Jason Varitek. The Garciaparra trade proves Epstein isn't afraid to pull the unthinkable, which is why many people close to the Red Sox expect the team to let Martinez and Lowe walk. Their first task will be signing Varitek, who remained the team's heart and soul behind the plate even after his negotiations broke down during spring training.

Carl Pavano, Marlins: By letting Matt Morris test free agency and by declining his option on Woody Williams, Jocketty can free up enough dollars to bid on a starting pitcher. This would be our top choice, although the Red Sox will make a big play on him if Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe both leave as free agents. Pavano was 18-8 last season with a 3.00 earned-run average. Cha-ching! (remember he wants to go to boston)

Brad Radke considered the keystone of the Twins' winter plans. "It revolves around Radke to a degree," Ryan said of the Twins' longtime ace, who is at or near the top of the New York Yankees' and Red Sox's wish lists but has said he doesn't consider himself a New York "kind of player." "If you bring Radke back, you're in decent shape. If you don't, you have 225 innings to worry about," Ryan said.

and heres some other rumors that mentions the sox:

Jon Lieber wants to stay a Yankee. General manager Brian Cashman wants Lieber back next year. Yet, as of yesterday the Yankees hadn't picked up an $8 million option on the veteran right-hander. Nor had there been discussions about a long-term deal that would replace the option. The Yankees have until midnight, Nov. 6, to pick up the option on Lieber, their second best pitcher in the postseason, or risk losing him to free agency. And judging by the shape of their rotation today, before any additions are made, that would be a colossal loss. If the Yankees let Lieber get to free agency, they are running the risk of several teams offering him a multi-year deal. Toronto, Baltimore, Cleveland and the Red Sox (especially if they lose Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe) will be interested in an effective pitcher who won't break the bank.

The Mets have been internally discussing the viability of acquiring World Series MVP Manny Ramirez as the antidote to their offensive woes. But if they can't work out a deal with the Red Sox - and Ramirez's Series heroics are a serious setback to their chances - the Mets might consider Sammy Sosa instead. One Red Sox executive called it "pretty unlikely" that they'd trade Ramirez; another termed it "a long shot."

Boston's Orlando Cabrera may be too costly, but the Sox certainly are interested in Cleveland's Omar Vizquel and perhaps Cristian Guzman, whom they know all too well from his years in Minnesota.

Another outfielder the Yankees once tried to trade for became eligible for free agency yesterday - Moises Alou. The Cubs declined an $11.5 million option on Alou, paying him a $2.5 million buyout instead. Alou has said he wants to return to Chicago, but the Cubs may want to get younger.

Ellis Burks said he has interest in managing the Red Sox' Triple-A Pawtucket ballclub next year. Besides managing, Burks is also interested in becoming a general manager. He retired after this season.

Johnny Pesky is battling laryngitis, a byproduct, he believes, of remaining in his wet, champagne-soaked clothes too long after the World Series celebration in St. Louis, as well as fielding non-stop phone calls from friends and relatives. He also revealed a World Series celebration moment. ``(Curt) Schilling picked me up and said, `This is for you, John,' and he kissed me, which kind of startled me,'' Pesky said. ``But I figure it's like we're cousins

regarding nomar:

a parade that is expected to draw millions to an unprecedented salute to sports passion, Nomar Garciaparra was flying into Boston, trying to remain low-key and out of the spotlight. "I'm not here to be interviewed," said Garciaparra as he walked toward baggage claim, though he did answer a few questions. The five-time All-Star shortstop said he was thrilled for his former teammates, that he had talked to a few of them, and he confirmed a Globe report from earlier this week that he had been granted a full World Series share. "That's what I heard," said Garciaparra. "That shows that those guys are the greatest. They're tremendous. That's why I'm happy for them." Would he be taking part in the parade? Garciaparra smiled, but said, "No." Instead, he was headed home "to rest up and get ready for next year."

Okay first of all the COOLEST thing happened to me yesterday. My high school football team had dinner last night, so were at one of the guys grandfathers houses. His grandfather walks in and says I invited a friend over you might like we're all uptight wondering who it is etc etc. Sure enough Harold Reynolds walks through the door. We all sit around him in the dining room and he starts telling storys and talking baseballand life and everything. It was cool but anyway to the point. We asked him who he thinks will get signed and resigned he said he'd be very surprised if Pedro resigned because he said he wants to go to the Marlins and that we should focus on Lowe and V-Tek the free agents really aren't the point of the story I just needed and excuse to brag about having dinner with HR :D.

Why would Pedro want to go to the Marlins??? Tell me you asked HR that.

Yes I did 2 reasons 1. NL team it's so much easier to pitch in the Nl and 2. It never gets cold in Miami.

It's all a moot point seeing as the Marlins would nt be willing to fork up enough money to meet Pedro's demands.

I thinthey might open up tp pay Pedro (who wouldn't).

A team like the Marlins who have been known to never spend money on big free agents.

No a team like the Marlins havenever payed big money to GO AFTER a free agent like Pedro if they hear he wants to go there they mighjt pursue him more.

Pudge wanted to re-sign with the Marlins last year, but they weren't willing to put up the money that he wanted, same with all the other free agents that they've lost. I don't even remember the last big free agent they've signed.

Pudge and Pedro are to wayyyyy different siruation Pudge is only one hitter who cann do only so much Pedro is a dominating pitcher who can control a game I think they might open the purse for him plus he puts fans in the seats.

I came across this on Sports Illustrated.com's Truth and Rumor section.

Red Sox GM Theo Epstein has told friends that if Pedro Martinez pushes too hard for a four-year deal, he'll look elsewhere and, in his words, "I'll just find two pitchers who at least show up on time." It's that kind of resolve that has the Yankees worried.

i hate to say it but i have this feeling the sox are going to cut payroll this offseason and not enter big contracts to bring in stars

all i'm hearing is that cabrera wants too much and pedro wants too many years

it sounds like they are waiting until 2006 for hanley ramirez and some of their other prospects to get into the game...talking about signing vizquel now as a holdover...

i'd hate to see this team turn out to be the '97 marlins, because as im sure all of you know, john henry owned that team too

i do realize that the city of boston and red sox nation will most likely not allow for any sort of rebuilding mode, but i just have this feeling they won't be doing much huge spending this winter...with the exception of varitek and maybe pavano..

they're saying they want to plan not only for 2005 but also for 2015

Posted
Gammons was just on ESPN radio with Dan Patrick and said if the Sox lose Pedro they're going after Pavano and Radke.

I'd rather see the Sox offer Caberra arbitration to about 6 mil a year, then let Hanley take over. I don't see why were offering Vartiek a long term deal, when we have Kelly Shoppach in the back stop to take over. Maybe a two year contract to Vartiek, but Shoppach is a great leader, who I think can take over.
Posted

we are stupid if we offer pedro more than 4 years (i'm sorry petey, you are my fav but the team comes first) and we are stupid if we offer tek more than 2 years at the price he's asking...

we all can see how tek is declining offensively, if you watch him play you'll notice the decreased bat speed and compiling hitting against poor pitching.

that's it for now, gf is bitching..
