sarasoxfan is right.

One game at a time.

If you flipped a coin 4 times, it is NOT likely that all 4 times will be heads... however, one thing that needs to be said is that EACH time you flip that coin, it has a 50/50 chance of being heads. Why do I say this? Because these teams are VERY close in talent, we've been having some bad luck of late, and to predict a winner is almost like a coin flip.

Instead of looking at the dauting task of winning 4 games in a row (3 now), let's look at each game individually. Regardless of yesterday or tomorrow, you look at the chances of the team winning TODAY. That's the only thing that should be discussed at this point.

Tonight: Pedro vs Mussina. Like always, we've got to expect Pedro to keep us in this game long enough to get some runs.

Beating Rivera has GOT to give these guys some confidence and momentum. They've beaten him 3 times this year.

The Sox beat Mussina twice last year in the ALCS, so it's possible. The Sox need a good effort from Pedro.

I like our chances in game #5.

Ortiz for MVP? No, Ortiz for something bigger than that. I don't know what yet, but 'MVP' isn't big enough. I'll let you all know if I think of something.

Ortiz represents something that the Sox have never had, a dagger. Someone who night after night, drives his swing deeper into the hearts of Yankee's fans everywhere. Every great playoff team has it, the old Yankee's had Brosius/O'Neill, who just murdered people, the Diamondbacks had killer Curt, hell even the Marlins had Rodriguez. The sox last year didn't have anyone who did that, except maybe Wake, but that dagger was reversed on us. Anyways, the Yankee's don't seem to have that player, Matsui could be it, the only problem is he doesn't speak any English, so nobody can rally around the man if you can't understand a goddamn word out of his mouth. Plus the Yankee's are built as a team of Superstars, nobody carries the load, because when somebody tries too, nobody picks him up. It has happened in Game 4 and Game 5. Sure they scored alot in the first three, but once the Sox pitching gets better, they look like a team that can scratch you, but they cannot apply that painful final blow. Ortiz is our dagger, and hopefully he can shove it into Yankee stadium with the force of his homeruns.

Guys,

Calm down. The only thing the Red Sox have done so far is make a series out of this thing. WE HAVE NOT DEFEATED THE YANKEES in this series. It's a long way from being over, but Lieber dominated us last time out and WHO KNOWS what we'll get from Schilling.

The Yankees STILL have guys that terrify me in the clutch situations: Matsui, Jeter, Williams, Posada to a smaller extent.

The Yankees STILL have one of the best offensive teams in baseball. The Yankees still have Javier Vazquez and Kevin Brown just waiting to prove they can succeed in the bright lights of New York.

The Red Sox have a leadoff hitter who's lost at the plate, a tired bullpen and rotation, and a manager who tries very hard, but sometimes looks completely lost oblivious.

OK, there's all the negative stuff out of the way. The Red Sox HAVE played 2 incredible games, played their hearts out, and made this series a series. I said after we went down 2-0 that this team is too good to be swept, and I still believe that we are the better team, but winning 2 games at Yankee Stadium against this team will be VERY difficult. Possible: Hell yes. Easy: No way.

I still believe that this series needs to be played one game at a time, and that's what these guys will do tonight. It's still a "win or go home" senario.

We as Sox fans have got to believe Curt Schilling can find a way to work 6 or 7 good innings tonight, and the offense to give him some support.

Let's go Sox!

Els--

I know we haven't won yet. I know we need at least 6 strong innings from Schilling tonight to have any reasonable hope of even sending this one to 7, and in Game 7 who knows what we'd send to the mound.

But even if we tank in Game 6, Ortiz has had a remarkable postseason. Last 3 Red Sox victories = 3 RBI hits in the bottom of the last from Ortiz. That is what I'm excited about now, not the almighty Red Sox juggernaut -- we still need 6 wins this season to claim that. And we all know that we're a looong way from that.

Game 7 will depend on game 6:

1. The Red Sox need to win game 6 to even get there.

2. Curt Schilling may throw 6 innings, he may throw 1. This will have a huge impact on any potential game 7 situation. The Red Sox obviously would love not to have to use Wake again, or Arroyo, and have them + Lowe available (on short rest for short work) in that spot. But Terry Francona and company HAVE to do do whatever is necessary to win game 6. Even if that means throwing EVERYONE.

I think a dark horse in all this might be Ramiro Mendoza. He's pitched just 2 innings in this series, so between all pitchers on both teams, he's got the freshest arm. Terry doesn't seem to have a lot of faith in him, but he may need to give this team some innings before it's all said and done.

The Red Sox need 6 or 7 innings from Schilling. If they can get that, depending on the score, the Sox can piece together the last few innings.

Ideal scenario: Schilling/Leskanic/Mendoza/Myers can get the Red Sox to game 7, where they can start Wake, and have Foulke/Timlin/Embree/Arroyo ready for action.

Let's face it, at this point, I'd take any scenario that gets us to game 7.

Psersonally I feel that game 6 is game 7 ifthe Yankees win obviously it's over if the Red Sox win i think there is too much momentum to stop them so personally I see todays (rain pending) game as huge for both teams not jsut us.

interesting theory, but I disagree with you.

Even if the Sox win tonight (and that's still a very big if), they have to come back and win again in game 7. The Yankees aren't going to roll over, and we should know from experience that momentum can change by the SECOND in baseball.

Let's face facts. This team was beating up on Roger Clemens a year ago, prepared to put the game out of reach, when Mike Mussina stepped onto the mound and killed the Sox hopes. He dominated the Red Sox long enough to give the Yankees a chance to come back and break all of our hearts.

Momentum is a wonderful thing. Obviously a win tonight would give the Red Sox the momentum going in to game 7. But all it takes is 3 runs in the first from the Yankees to turn the momentum the other way.

A win tonight puts the pressure on the Yankees for sure. But they've shown they don't buckle under pressure.

come on people....dont give up on the red sox so soon. we have accomplished something great even if we lose game seven.

In case this was directed at me-- I'm not giving up. I am trying to be realistic. We know for a fact that the pressure's on the Yankees... but since they're no strangers to pressure and historically don't buckle... I wouldn't consider that an advantage.

Well, it's down to 1 in a row. The last 6 games need to be forgotten.

It's down to this, game 7, Yankee stadium. Who's the hero?

Interesting prediction.

Call me crazy, but I'm going with Bill Mueller. I've got a good feeling about him.

I wouldn't make any predictions about the performance of any player in particular, but these two teams are run-scoring machines and both are due to light up the scoreboard. Would not be surprised to see a final score of 13 to 9 or something like that, regardless of who wins.

I'd be THRILLED if D-Lowe gave us the exact same effort as in game 4. 5 innings, 2 runs. I'd take that in a heartbeat, and then hand it over to the 'pen.
