i don't care what anyone says. i would rather play the twins over the a's. yea, we might be dominating them in head to head play this year but the playoffs are another thing. the big 3 will bring their A game.

the twins might have santana but you people need to realize we have PETEY AND SCHILLING. santana has to lose a game sooner or later. i have confidence in the sox lineup. we might have to see santana twice but the twins will have to see either pedro or schilling twice. either way, odds are not in their favor.

It's not just Santana though, I don't think we match up well against their team. Their homefield is also probably the loudest in the league, but I'm pretty sure that won't make much of a difference. Besides Oakland fears us, they know that they cannot beat us and will probably not be very confident in themselves heading into the series. They've also hit a tough skid as of late and they will not have as much of a chance to rest there players and line up there rotation as we will. They may have to put their best pitcher in for the last game of the season rather than for the first game of the playoffs.

it doesn't matter which order mulder zito hudson appears, they are a formidable trio. there is no ace on that team.

i'm just afraid the sox not taking the a's too seriously.. that could just be disasterous.

There's no question who I want to win the games: Minnesota. We're in the playoffs no matter what (man, that feels good), and I don't think it'll matter who we play.

Yes, we've owned Oakland, and they've struggled in the playoffs lately.

Yes, we've struggled against Minnesota this season.

BUT, let's face facts: None of that matters come playoff times. We were lucky to squeeze by Oakland in last year's series and I believe with Mulder, Hudson, Harden and Zito they have 4 very solid pitchers. We've got 2 awesome pitchers, and 1 decent one (Arroyo) and one who CAN be awesome but can also be aweful (Wakefield).

Minnesota scares me, but in reality I think I'd rather face Minnesota than Oakland's big 4.

Back to the subject at hand: Until we're mathematically eliminated from the postseason, I have to hold out hope that we can catch the MFY. Therefore, I'm hoping for a Minnesota Twins sweep of New York.

As I've said many times before, this team will be very dangerous in a playoff series. I believe we can match up with ANYbody... So now that the Sox are guaranteed a spot, us fans can sit back and watch the other teams (Oakland and Anaheim) battle it out.

Speaking of which.... Anaheim needs mentioning here too, considering they are tied for the division lead now. They are a very strong team, and are on fire right now. I think between Minnesota, Oakland, and Anaheim.... I'd enjoy facing Anaheim the LEAST.

Either team can beat us but the Twins scare me for a number of reasons. The Twins are young, hungry and get very little props nationally and want to show how good a team they are and be taken seriously. Their short series rotation is formidable and they play strong defense. They are fundamentally sound to boot . The A's while having been our personal whipping boy ain't too shabby either. If their pitching staff is "on" they can beat anyone. Having said that our boys can't be easily written off either!! The pitching if used correctly is second to none and the defensive improvement is testament to our overall turnaround from the trance we seemed to be in after the great showing in April. Offensively we are just damn scary!! The team chemistry is probably as good as any I have ever seen including our Super Bowl champion NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS!! Stats and intangibles are IMO just an unbeatable combo that can and will win the as my Dad would always say "The Whole Magilla!!". I will close saying that Lowe and Wakefields inconsistency give a cause for concern but Trots return has been even more of a factor than I could have ever hoped for our overall chances. So boys run the table and hope the Twins help us out big time as overtaking the EE could give us a psychological advantage and give us the home field edge as well. Either way I like our chances!! GO SOX!!!!

Later.Mike

Well said.

We've got a good shot no matter who we play... We've just got to go out there and do it. Take care of our business, and let what happens happen.

We are rooting for the Twins here. With the division still within reach, you still gotta play for the AL East crown. If the Yankees sweep we'll probably end up playing the A's or Angels, but it would be with us with the home field advantage. Remember guys, homefield advantage is huge for us considering our home-road splits.

BTW a Yankees sweep wouldn't be terrible either cuz then they'd play the Twins most likely. It's really a win-lose-win situation here.

Yes. We're gunning for the division, folks.

Rumors out of New York say El Duque was scratched from pitching yesterday (they didn't need him because the game was rained out) but he's not supposed to throw today, either. The reason: he has a "tired" arm. (thanks Sarasoxfan for bringing this up)

I hate to see players injured (especially someone like El Duque who I respect) but this could be a HUGE blow to New York with Vazquez and Brown struggling.

We'll have to keep an eye on the Evil Empire. If they take 2 of 3 (or 3 of 3) from Minnesota, we've got to settle for the WC... But we've got to hope the Twinkies give Torre and company fits!

Game 1: Santana vs Mussina

Game 2: Lohse vs Lieber

Like I said before: I'm rooting for Minnesota 100%

I don't think I'm capable of rooting for the MFY. The team that concerns me most right now is the Angels. As tough as Santana is, the Angels bullpen is very good. Minnesota gets to rest it's staff this weekend as the Angels and A's wear out their staffs against each other. Home field advantage needs to be pursued. Go Twinkies.

I just heard their game today was postponed in the 11th inning so they could make use of the stadium for a college football game.

Since when does college football trump a baseball game with extreme playoff implications?

It doesn't in places where baseball matters.
