wasnt wasdin in the famed canseco trade? Dont they have a nickname for him like

"Long ball Wasdin"...

Anyway, petey, and our bats will demolish these guys.

I know els makes excellent posts, but aside from that I think we win.

"way back wasdin". And I predict a 58-0 victory with him pitching.

Wait a minute... that can't really be, I mean, it's not THAT Wasdin, is it? As in 'John "Wayback" Wasdin'? That's too funny.

Anecdotally, I was with my then-fiancee now-beloved-wife at a Sox game at (what was then) Arlington Stadium. This was when Wasdin was still a member of the Sox. I don't remember what the game situation was, but Boston pulled their starter (Wakefield, I think) and put in Wasdin. I made the required "This next pitch is going to go way back" remark to my partner, and then all happened according to the script. The next Rangers batter (Kapler, I think, in an odd sort of coincidence) did indeed take Wasdin way back. Not out, just solidly to the wall. It was hilarious (or would have been if it hadn't added to an already sound thrashing for Boston).

Seriously, though, I remember when Wasdin was with us that some intelligent-sounding Sox fans were saying that he had the makeup to be a good starter, but that we were horribly misusing him out of the pen. Any thoughts on that? His ERA as posted by element doesn't exactly inspire awe, but has Texas been using him regularly as a starter? (I wouldn't think so judging from his W-L stats.) So maybe Texas has likewise been misusing him in relief, thus inflating his ERA, but deep down inside there's a formidable starter tucked away...?

And now back to the regularly scheduled game-centered thread.

Amateur prediction... um, it's Martinez in Fenway pitching for what is undeniably the hottest team in baseball vs. Wasdin. I'm thinking about it... thinking... still weighing the data...

Good post there Beaneater, and I especially love your signature.

Anyway, Wasdin's stats this year are:

 2004 TEX 9 7 2 2 0 0 0 43.2 58 34 34 12 14 25 7.01 1.65 .319

He's started 7 gmaes out of 9 appearances, and he has a 7.01 ERA. :o No need to say this because its painfully obvious, but he sucks.

In his 4 years with Boston, wayback performed somewhat better:

 1997 BOS 53 7 4 6 0 0 0 124.2 121 68 61 18 38 84 4.40 1.28 .251
1998 BOS 47 8 6 4 0 0 0 96.0 111 57 56 14 27 59 5.25 1.44 .288
1999 BOS 45 0 8 3 2 0 0 74.1 66 38 34 14 18 57 4.12 1.13 .236
2000 BOS 25 1 1 3 1 0 0 44.2 48 25 25 8 15 36 5.04 1.41 .273

I don't remember him too well, but he did show some promise as a starter. He obviously hasn't developed given his current stats. Our hot bats should destroy him, and Manny should come out of his mini-funk.

Thanks.

(now I'll include my biased Red Sox fan pregame analysis)

Go Red Sox! Let's hope Pedro avenges the beating he took against Texas last time and the offense tees off on "Way back" Wasdin!

I'm away from my computer this weekend (starting now) so no detailed game previews from me this weekend. Next would be Tuesday's game.

Anyway, Let's hope for a Sox sweep!

2.5 back o' yanks, and we gain a game on Texas. Very good. This game was closer than it should have been though, Wasdin pitched very well.

Wasdin pitched a very good game, but Pedro was incredicle tonight. This team is pure magic. 2-0 with no Damon and Ortiz. It seems we can win with any lineup that Tito throws out there. And Timlin seems to be pitching better. 10 in a row!
