Red Sox Place Marcelo Mayer on Injured List, David Hamilton Recalled, Ceddanne Rafaela to See More Time at Second

Just as the Boston Red Sox were seemingly getting back to full health, they were struck by injury once more.

This time the team will be without rookie Marcelo Mayer as he hits the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain. Mayer was forced to leave the Red Sox's latest game, being seen on camera pointing to his wrist. Mayer did say that it was only a sprain and not hamate or broken bone related.

In 44 games, Mayer was hitting .228/.272/.402 with eight doubles, a triple, four home runs and 10 RBIs. Mayer's greatest production was defensively as he bounced between second base and third base and played excellent defense despite coming up through the system as a shortstop.

The severity of the injury isn’t known but in response to the injury, David Hamilton was recalled from Worcester. Alex Cora also said that Ceddanne Rafaela will play more second base for the time being. The move to the middle infield for Rafaela will clear up the outfield logjam and will likely make the starting outfield be Roman Anthony in left field, Jarren Duran in center field and Wilyer Abreu in right field.

Knowing the IL history of this fragile team, I'm guessing longer absence. It's the nature of this team.

Grissom had an .854 OPS in June and has a .992 OPS in July.  What does he need to do to get a call up? Kill the Wicked Witch of the West?

Hamilton is a Cora favorite. Average utility infielders have a certain connection.

I'm starting to worry about Arias' name included in all the latest trade proposals. With Mayer taking his annual IL trip, Arias is looking more and more like the dependable shortstop of the near future.

But Dorion Soto may only six or seven years away... he's 17. We should be good by 2032!

I'm starting to worry if Arias can hold his trade value. He's been in an awful slump and is now down to .691.

Those aren't something you can teach, and why Mayer is a big leaguer -- when he can stay on the field.

Of all the bus loads of shortstops stockpiled since the Bloom Era, Arias is the one guy Soxprospects gives "a good chance to stick at shortstop."

Most of Bloom’s shortstop draftees fell into the category of “best player on his high school team” and were never expected to suck at shortstop…
