    It's not an exam. It is an endeavor where, in totality, half of every decision will be correct, and half will be incorrect. 50% makes him perfectly average.

    I would do #2. I wouldn't do #1 unless we have an extension worked out. Shaw might be a 15 fWAR/5 player for us. Even a good Hoerner might only be 5 WAR, if that. Tolle is more valuable than Witherspoon, but not that much more valuable.

    Aren't those kind of opposites? Right now, a lot of the criticism is that Breslow refuses to go all-in on a particular player.

    It had to be deliberate. Either the owner or the GM wanted to make a point, and wasted an entire draft doing so. Even if you were 90% sure a pitcher was the right pick at a given slot, the chances of 20 straight 90% choices is still only 12%.

    Is that true? The only pick I liked better than Witherspoon, at that slot, was Irish, and only because he was a catcher.

    2021. One of the craziest things I've ever seen. I'm a BPA kind of guy, but can bend that rule slightly. But 20 pitchers is insane, even you had absolutely -0- pitching to start with. The career totals of the 20 pitchers drafted (I know, it's still early) is 0.9.

    There was a great article in FG many years back. Certain trends take over, and at the time, it was not signing older guys. Those guys then become fine pickups on short contracts. We still need a RH thumper, but in a vacuum, IKF at $6M is a good deal. IF he gets 600 ABs, he'll likely have a 2+ bWAR.

    I was going to edit my post to say that we can't really do that, even if we wanted to. There might be some coin-flip guys later in the draft. But earlier, you have to go for the best player available. And even with that said, we are less likely to go after college OFs since they won't get playing time for the next four years.

    IMHO, this is one of the zig when they zag moves. If other teams are pursuing HRs, 'maybe' you chase good defense at a far lower cost.

    If we were to trade Duran, now that we have IKF, I am far less interested in Paredes. I'm curious what type of thunderous RH bats/no glove types are available.

    I'm not a Bostonian, but if I had the time, I'd love to take a walk to see the Revolutionary War historical markers. Cask & Flagon across the street from Fenway is kind of historical also.

    I hope we never need him, but he is not bad for AAA depth. And I love the transaction tree. We got him for free, traded him for Moran, and then got him back for free. Both him and Moran might qualify as the next-man-up from AAA.

    Walker had a 2nd half .799 last year, and benching a $20M player on OD is bad optics for a GM. I mean, they have reasons to keep him, but they won't look good if Paredes is on the bench and they are short one OF.

    Everyone probably assumes Paredes is on the block. I'd make a non-insignificant wager he is on the bench on OD. They tried Altuve in LF and didn't like the results. I believe that Altuve had one start in LF in Aug/Sept, and 49 starts at 2B in that time frame. Barring injuries, Pena and Correa are automatic starters at SS & 3B.

    Err, you could've told me that before I drafted Wheeler. And I assume that Middleton might be hesitant about laying out an unlimited budget, and they have more faith in Painter. But it is worrisome that DD had little interest in locking him in.

    I think we could get more for Bello. But if we could reach an understanding on an extension, ala Crochet, it would be hard to find a better fit that Hoerner.

    It's crazy what happens in places where it doesn't usually snow. I have a friend from Harrisburg who said they wouldn't even pay attention to 12 inches of snow. But entire highways in Houston would shut down over 1-2 inches of snow.

    These trades still happen. SD traded Soto and Houston traded Tucker. Mil traded Burnes. It's unusual, but it happens. It's really just an excess for a need thing.

    In two of the past three years, Rooker had a 2.0 and 2.3 bWAR. He had a 5.6 squeezed in between, but with a .362 BABIP. I can't tell which Rooker to expect, but I think it would be the 2023/25 version. Last year, Abreu was the better player, 5 years younger, and will be materially cheaper. Not a fan of Romero. Perhaps someone else will rate him higher. I like Bennett, but I think the Cubs will want someone ranked closer to what Shaw was ranked.

    My guess is that it is a bluff. The Cubs could hang on to everyone and only lose one year out of five service years with Shaw. If the Astros hang onto IP they lose half of his value. He likely won't start.
