  1. It's overrated. Here are the #3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 scoring teams. Mil 29 Tor 32 Cubs 34 Bos 25 DBacks 36 These teams aren't depending on a 40-HR guy to score.
  2. This is like the 'full throttle' statement. If I was part of the press corp, my first question would've been "what does that even mean? What's the number? I assume you have a budget, so what's the number? Of if you don't have an exact number, what is the worst-case number? What's the range?" I'd have pounded him until he admitted that they had no spending plan, which they didn't.
  3. I've been saying this for years. Some people should never talk. Ever. He might not be dumb, but he feels compelled to answer questions that don't have pat answers, and he talks in sound bites. The easy, non-PC answer is that everyone is replaceable. A more PC answer is that they have Duran, Yoshida, and Casas to take his place. Simply say what 90% of the fans already know. Devers is an excellent hitter who is a DH. We can start Duran in his place, be just as effective given Duran's speed, and spend the $32M elsewhere.
  4. What is a fun(ny) exercise is to add up the rankings for RS and RA for each team. It's surprising how often a team can be 3rd in one category, but 13th in another, and still do very well.
  5. I don't always agree with Pete, but no one works harder and he has some understanding of the game.
  6. I think of it differently. Don't swing at anything borderline until you have two strikes. Until you have 2 strikes, swing hard at anything you like. This one drives me crazy, but at 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-0, and 3-1, don't swing at a pitch you cannot drive. Every single game, often with Story, I'm thinking to myself, "what did you think you were going to do with that pitch? The upside is a swing-and-miss, and the downside is a ground-out to 2nd.' If you aren't going to strike out, then give the pitcher his due, and hope for an easier pitch next time. The rest is mostly noise. Taking strike 3 right down the middle is an issue. But if the count is 2-2, and the pitch is tough and on the border, I have no problem taking the pitch. But the bottom line for me is, pitchers don't usually strike the hitter out. The hitter strikes themselves out. The strike zone is not that large. If you swing at nothing but strikes, you won't strike out that often.
  7. I wouldn't give up anything. He's owed $150M+. Assuming he ages normally, he'll have to be about the best player in BB over the next three years in order to earn his salary.
  8. If walking Judge was a net negative for the NYY, wouldn't other teams walk him every PA?
  9. I've already provided Fred with the numbers. They should be an above-average scoring team. I have them at 102.4 wRC+.
  10. I don't consider it particularly close. Schwarber + Alonso likely won't be close to the WAR added by Contreras + Durbin + Suarez + Gray.
  11. That was the old format.
  12. Cool! So Fred is predicting us to finish 1st!
  13. You already admitted they should win enough games to make the playoffs. After that, it is a crap shoot.
  14. But you do think that they will win 90. The difference between us is de minimis.
  15. Absolutely yes.
  16. I claimed we wouldn’t add another QUALITY IF (which we didn’t) But we did. We added the #10 3B from 2025. If you want to insist on someone with an .820 OPS, go ahead. But everyone else will recognize that a top-10 3B is a quality player. and you proposed a wager that claimed we would add SOMEBODY But I didn't. My bet was an offer of an infielder that either had a 2025 2.5 WAR, or someone predicted to have a 2026 2.5 WAR.
  17. 90 wins should be a playoff team. It's close, so no guarantee
  18. I'd go so far as to say he is more important to us than other teams. We have an injury-prone Story & Mayer, an unproven Mayer, and a second year Durbin. I'd be a little surprised of IKF doesn't get 250-300 ABs.
  19. The spirit of the debate was that he said we wouldn't add another infielder. When I offered a wager that we'd add a 2.5 WAR IF, he changed it to the near- impossible .820 infielder.
  20. Not under the new format, and not in either league.
  21. There are the OBP/HR rankings for our 4 recent WS teams. Small sample size and all, but the disparity is incredible. We finished 1st in scoring in three of those seasons. OBP HR 2004 1 5 2007 2 18 2013 1 6 2018 1 9
  22. I'd make a modest wager that Breslow knew that Romy had a good chance of not starting the season and asked for Monasterio. That's why the news about Romy came out so late.
  23. I barely even look at these guys. IMHO, you're either a guy I think can break into the rotation (15-20%) of you're a 5-6-7th inning guy, maybe.
  24. He was huge when he came out of HS. And this was back when Sweet Lou Carnesecca could land NYC HS stars.
