  1. It was maybe his 3rd AB. The count was 1-0. The pitcher threw a nice-enough pitch, belt-high on the outside. Maybe a strike, but maybe not. But Story swung like it was an 0-2 count. Like he was trying to protect the plate. When you're ahead of the count, you should only swing at pitches you can drive. By swinging, he was either going to go to 1-1, or make an out. There was no upside to swinging. The best possible outcome was likely a swing-and-miss. This is grammar school level philosophy.
  2. I think the idea was that Mayer would be sitting against tough lefties, Romy (and then Monasterio) hitting aginst the lefties. Since neither Romy nor Monasterio can play SS, then neither could Mayer.
  3. Since none of those guys were traded, it is difficult to blame the RS for not trading for them.
  4. Contreras is outplaying Alonso, so maybe take that off the table.
  5. My favorite part of the season is when the GM gets blamed for dumping someone for peanuts (Tibbs & Harrison), while other threads blame the GM for giving away Harrison (1.80 ERA) and future superstar in Tibbs.
  6. Guys like Eaton and Refsnyder are kind of journeymen at this point.
  7. Roman hasn't impressed me with his fielding. He spent most of his time in the minors in CF, so there might be a learning curve.
  8. No doubt in my mind that I could make an argument for just walking away. Part of my issue with his value was that he largely a product of Fenway, with a career .869 at the Fens. His road OPS is only .748, with an average of 16 HRs/600 ABs. With a mediocre glove, that makes him a mediocre SS overall. Like you said, even $150M/6 was pushing it. That said, it probably worked out worse for SD than I would've predicted.
  9. Since 2021, at a minimum of 200 IPs, Whitlock is #6 in ERA. And #14 in Whip, so he probably has a fair amount of 3 up/3 down.
  10. He looks as good as ever, imho. He has a 2.47 career ERA as an RP. I don't see a single negative number on his resume.
  11. No. But I figured we'd either keep X or Devers. I thought the gold standard for SS signings was Swanson. Good, but not great, consistent, and wouldn't break the bank. Swanson got $177M/7, and was one year younger. Story was $140M/6. Part of this might also be that I liked the guy. He was one of us. But had the RS walked away without an offer, I wouldn't have thought it was strange. 6 years starting at age 30 is rough, but not impossible.
  12. That's a pet peeve of mine. We have limited information about everything. I'll voice my opinion, but I'm also completely aware that moves are made in anticipation of other moves.
  13. Even Boras must have been chuckling under his breath. I had $156M/6 as the right number, though I'd have paid a little more since I liked him. SD was over-market by a solid $100M. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone miss by that much.
  14. Mostly true of many RS hitters. That was a particularly bad pitch given Rafael's free-swinging nature.
  15. That's the story of his year. He takes very few pitches. Just pitch to the corners until you get to a 3-ball count.
  16. Are you sure? I'd have sent him 100% of the time.
  17. Of course. Keep your friends close and you enemies closer.
  18. This is more important than just winning a series. Establishing a minimum-wage #3 is one of the most valuable things a team can do. If we develop 2-3 good SPs (not even great), you can throw $40M-45M at a guy like Skubal without checking with your minimum-wage accountant.
  19. The study says no, But I have my doubts. But there are other issues at play, imho. If I'm pitching to a good base stealer, with a good average hitter behind him, I'm throwing it down the middle before I walk him. The margin behind the two hitters has to be large. I'm not throwing the ball down the middle to Soto just because Judge is behind him. Soto is too good for that. But I would throw it down the middle to Goldschmidt, for example, rather than risk walking him in front of Judge.
  20. No biggie. A strong B+ becomes an A depending on my mood. Still, if/when I make a mistake, I like to find out why. Sometimes it's simple, sometimes a blind spot. It's important to know which.
  21. But all workouts are good. Some better, some worse, but all good. And there are *some* advantages to high weight/low rep lifts. One is that personal bests inspire you more. A second, in my amateur opinion, is that a lot of weight will signal you what part of your body needs more work.
  22. I'll get back to the rest of the post another time, but this was always a pet peeve of mine. I remember a TE the NYG drafted in the 3rd round, maybe 40 years ago. He came into camp way overweight and got cut. Even back then, I think it was a $300k gig. Another dude on Seton Hall (Wright?), maybe 6'10'-6'11 and had some talent. If he had spent 6 months eating nothing but protein and veggies, and spent two hours a day in the gym, he'd likely have been a top-15 pick. He could've hit Dunkin on the way home from the signing, but he'd still have some serious money.
