  1. Chances are good that this Schwarber fan has biases baked in to his belief that we'll be able to get him and still have money left over
  2. yes, but i wonder if he'll be viewed through the lens of a DH and therefore the market wont be as robust as for Alonzo or Breg is my theory.
  3. but of course id do it, because im more about defensive versatility than i am about ideal defensive alignment.
  4. I dont mind Mayer at SS or 3b but I dont love him at 2b because we have a lot of bigger infielders, but we have a lot of quicker ones (even story). And Mayer is a big boy. We have more guys who can make a diving play at 2b than we have guys who have the arm for third. Even if we bring back breg, i prob slide story to 2b. Feel like Mayers size is wasted at 2b.
  5. Mayer is almost a lock to be one of the internal dudes because he's cheap, 6'3, has plenty of arm for left side of IF, mobility for second, and a solid hitting floor. We dont know the hitting ceiling, but know the floor. I think its unreasonable to expect Mayer to be terrible with the bat, he'll contribute something offensively.
  6. And you can say that my bias towards schwarber because hes worn the uniform before and we should not have let him go in the first place (in hindsight) and he gave us fun moments last time he was here - if you think thats adding some bias... You probs right
  7. Correct on the locks (5 starting bats). For the other 4, theres 2 to be filled internally and 2 externally (to me) Mayer is most likely (considerably) to nab one of those internal openings. Our only disagreement is I really want Schwarber and im not going to let yoshida be the reason why i give alonso 200m when i could have schwarber at closer to 100m. If those contracts meet in the middle (they both get 150m) - im more okay with going alonso over schwarber Im not paying alonso 2x when hes not as good of a hitter because he plays a bad 1b. Are you sure schwarber cant be as good at first?
  8. 18m x 2 yrs = 36m shwarber will get 110m, alonso will get 160m. ALonso is an inferior hitter. Spending an extra 50m to get an inferior hitter so we can keep masa at DH due to his contract feels like "chasing bad money with good money" If alonso/schwarber expected contracts at close, that could alter things for me. But I dont want to pay 2x for alonso when we can get schwarber at half the cost because "DH is locked down" Id rather just teach masa first base. I know hes not the ideal body for it, but the difference between alonso and masa at 1b from a defensive runs saved, I dont think its a deal breaker. Sure Alonsos reach going to create a couple outs but yoshida might make a few plays that alonso cant once he has some practice.
  9. I teach him how to play 1b and think (unfortunately) Casas is back in May and hurt by June. Masa/Romy are your 1b platoon.
  10. Give me an elite bat at 3-4 years who is a DH over guys who are better suited to be DHs but are forced into the field, who dont have elite bats, at 6-7 years.
  11. This is why I want schwarber Bregman - will get more money and years because he plays defense, but he never really looked healthy to me last year, outside of the beginning and certainly never looked "spry". The Bregman that ended last year felt like an old man and we're talking 6 years at big money? Declining defense, declining durability, solid bat Alonso - I think will get 6-7 years like Bregman , again because he plays 1b - but not well. And yes, sorry, I do think that Masa would be better (defensively). Thats a low bar. Aging, the fact that he plays a bad 1b (anybody can play a bad 1b) means nothing to me, solid bat Schwarber - considerably better bat than the above 2. Because he doesnt play defense (but would prob be just as good as ALonso if he did and Breg is prob a 1b 10% into his next contract lol) - I think thats going to suppress his value and keep him at 3-4 years. I see him as reasonable because I think other GMs are foolishly scared off by the DH.
  12. Im not sure the dude can really even run anymore.
  13. Im thinking Story is one IF, dont need an OF or C. 3 infield openings and DH. Is how I arrived at 4 openings.
  14. Vancouver on the radar to get a team?
  15. thats a pretty big "except for" i agree that ownership greed is the problem in baseball.
  16. Bregman leaving, trading Duran, having no devers aside* (thats 3 of your top 4 hitters)
  17. with crochet already , yeah. Its hard to pay 2 aces ace money and still have enough left in the piggybank to fix the offense Agreed - id rather trade for a #2 who has 3-4 years at modest money than a #1 who we are going to have immediately extend at ace money
  18. My issue with skubal is that on top of the trade capital we'd have to spend, we'd have to blow most the budget on extending him.
  19. What im thinking: We have 4 non locked down offense spots. Solve 2 internally. Go external for the other 2. Make sure one is schwarber and the other can play on both sides of the ball. Trade an OF'er and/or prospects (but not "the farm") to add to the pitching.
  20. You know, me, you (and moonslav) are not that far apart. The RS have 4 non locked down positions in 1b, 2b, 3b, DH. You stated last week that you hope that 2 of mayer, campbell, casas come back and stay healthy and productive. You even said you would make an offer to schwarber but would much prefer to keep it to 3 years. I agree with remaining hopeful on 2 internal guys mayer, campbell, casas (but i would include yoshida in that because i know people hate it but i would not count against him being fine defensively at 1b). So 2 out of these 4. I love that you target schwarber. Hes proved he can produce here, and hes a really really good hitter. We only really disagree on that last spot, where i would prefer going external. Maybe bregman maybe someone in a trade.
  21. But Henrys plan is NOT to cut prices or concessions or give stadium workers a raise. Its to buy an NFL team, hes said so himself.
  22. You said no big contracts. Theres middle ground between that and the dodgers. Ive never advocating for going full dodgers with it. Just that they dont bother me as much as the small market greedy billionaire club. Im all for a raise to the stadium workers and him giving some money to charity.
  23. reach and throwing lefty are advantages to playing 1b. But so is flexibility. And Yoshida is infinitely more flexible than casas and toro last year. Yoshida cant run or throw well. But Im not ruling him out , him being serviceable at 1b - and if Im him, I wanna add the tool to my toolbelt. Im not saying pencil in masa at 1b and leave him there all season even if he struggles. Im saying that there is a gap between schwarbers bat and every other alternative bat i see us getting (even alonso). So i get schwarber. And i put one of him, yoshida, casas, romy or some breakout minor leaguer (pw, campbell) at 1b and if that 1b winds up being schwarber someone else from the list goes to DH. If Schwarber cant play 1b, than he goes to dh and yoshida , casas, romy or someone else has to play 1b I dont let yoshida stop me from going after a better hitter than devers
  24. im not old school, but one my old school thing that i love is having a designated speedster off the bench. I agree. I dont hate hamilton on this bench. Just not as a starter.
  25. and he bought the penguins.
