    Depends on how much Bloom is subsidizing on Willi. And technically, Brez can sign still Bregman and brag to his dumbass owners that he only signed one free agent. Plus: for all we know, Bloom may want his boy Mayer in trade instead of Duran.

    Package Donovan with Contreras and make a trade that gives Bloom an outfielder and a few of the 25 SEC pitchers Breslow drafted. Then sign Bregman, and let's go. Don't worry about Mayer; if he's healthy he'll get plenty of playing time when Bregman and/or Story break down and/or rest one day a week at DH vs. a lefty who's tough on Yoshida.

    As presumed, Bregman -- and more Boras -- has held up the position player plan. If the Sox' top priority is to bring back Bregman, they can't overpay for guys like Schwarber or Alonso in the meantime. They also can't overpay for Bichette or waste money on Suarez until they know Bregman is signing somewhere else. Brez can make trades while waiting, but even those may be delayed until he can better target specific positions that are "open" (this is why both management and the front office value versatility so much; to fill in holes for players too expensive for ownership).

    They had him, just didn't want to use him in the lineup too early lest he win Rookie of the Year and they'd lose one more year of control. So they ended up 5 wins short of top seed and instead had to play all their playoff games in the South Bronx.

    Lou Merloni must read my posts. Here's what he said last night: "I like defense and I want contact. Sign Bregman and Okamoto." ... well, maybe not all my posts. I just can't see the Dread Sox signing two big money free agents. More like: 1. Bregman and a trade for a first baseman. Or... 2. Okamoto and a trade for a second baseman. Fans can only hope one of those lines will align with a lineup that lines up with the company line from malign ownership that sells seats at Fenway Park behind giant metal support poles that obstruct the line of sight from the spectator experience.

    They were thinking he was versatile enough to top grounders to both the right side and the left side of the infield. Plus, there weren't as many cell phone towers four years ago. So Bloom heard a lot of static when he thought his scout in Japan said to sign Masa. Chaim swore he heard "YO Shida! YO MAMA!" but the scout claims he really said, "NO Shida! NO MASA!"

    ... if we trade for Marte AND also retain Bregman OR sign Bichette. Don't overrate team stats and rankings. Boston averaged 4.85 runs per game last year, but scored 3 runs or less 72 times, including in all 3 playoff games. And unless Chapman is about to have another career year at the end of games, the Sox better upgrade the offense.

    Okamoto is still out there, and he's a better all-around player than Alonso. OK can play Ok at 1B and 3B. And he doesn't strike out. The Sox value versatility, and god bless them, may actually be looking for more contact than another all-or-nothing swinger. More likely, they're looking to spend less on OK than Polar Bear. Of course, they can still sign Bregman, who we already know fits in... and then trade for Marte. Or Donovan. Or Diaz. But if they pivot to Suarez, I'll throw up in mouth.

    The Red Sox aren't going to sign two free agent bats. If they were, then just pay for quality -- not one good bat and another made of fallapartical board. That doesn't even make sense to penny pinchers. If Boston isn't going to pay up, then expect one big signing and Craig Breslow to trade from his wealth of young pitching for another hitter.

    Thanks. Quite an endorsement -- a young pitcher for a hitter still young enough to be part of the core of a sustained contender? I'd trade an unproven pitcher for an All-Star everyday player about to enter his prime -- any day.

    You may be most familiar with Paredes in Houston -- what's the word on him? All-Star righty-swinger? Looking at stats: around a .350 on base guy the past three years, with sub-20% K-rate. He's also a negative dWAR third baseman. A poor man's Raffy, without the poor attitude? Isaac has actually played 1B, as well as his main spot at 3B.

    You don't believe in regency muscles? Yandy cranked 25 homers last year -- something no Red Sox batter surpassed -- and had 55 extra base hits... which would rank 2nd to Duran, only with a Bregmanesque K-rate. Throw me a life jacket... at least a Wintogreen lifesaver! Even though I keep acknowledging the need for HRs, my main mantra has always been contact. Boston does not need any more all-or-nothing swingers with more holes than -- I won't say Swiss cheese -- green cheese on the moon (damn, sorry Moonslav, no more bong cracks... we need more frisbees to clean up this lineup!)

    Come on -- that line-up in the dumb sample size Bronx series was pitiful. Besides Story, who was there all season, the Red Sox best hitters were a singles-hitting DH batting clean-up and two Quadruple A players. Toronto got 20 HRs in the postseason from four guys who did it all year: All-Stars Vlad and Kirk, Silver Slugger Springer, and Break-out Barger.

    Sorry, I must have been thinking like a Red Sox exec -- recruiting a pitcher coming off an injury before we know if he'll come back as good as new or have to rehab through another season of setbacks.

    The Jays also had 320 less strikeouts than Boston -- that was the main reason their offense was better. The Sox need to make more contact, not less. If they lose Bregman, they're not paying Bichette more to replace him. Brez will have to trade Tolle or Early for Marte just to break even (forget Suarez, who's a bigger whiffer than anybody already on the team). This week is our CBO's time to shine, swinging some swaps that may define the next season -- especially if ownership is chopping up his debit card.

    That may be exactly what the front office is hoping Red Sox fans will be chanting if Boston fails to land any big free agent bats. Swing a trade for another pitcher, solve the outfield logjam, and save kajillions on DHs you don't want still hanging around when they're older. Of course, Cora will also have to hire 80-year old Rod Carew out of retirement to teach the batting order how to bunt, cuz they ain't homering to any playoffs...

    He may be laying low until he can officially change his last name. I'm half serious; he's legendary for achieving ultimate success for two franchises known for decades as lovable losers -- and after he reached those pinnacles, some pundits wondered if he'd be a viable candidate for political office... ... at least for Manfred's job, which comes with as much bs as donkeys and elephants.

    It was 10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10 -- that's 10 Asst. VPs who have been entrenched in the front office since at least when Raffy came up as a 20-year-old. They all knew all about him: his personality, and how he'd react when they intentionally wouldn't prepare him for the Bregman acquisition. And poor Devers, by pouting and refusing to bend -- and better yet, calling them out in public -- "forced" the org to wipe that albatross contract clean off the books! Devious, for sure. Unbelievable? What's more hard to fathom: that out of an entire overloaded office of the best Ivy League brains a billionaire can collect, not one of these Einsteins could forsee this scenario? Not one genius Red Sox Exec felt the need to reach out to the team's sensitive best hitter and highest paid player with the longest tenure BEFORE signing his asterisking replacement? Put it another way: if they were all suddenly that dumb, how did they keep their jobs after losing their one star home run hitter?
