    The surest way to make a team competitive is to add quality starting pitchers on the mound. This is no mystery, and no modern stats can supersede the history of the past 120 years. Trading prospects for a guy like Pedro or Sale in his prime or signing a guy like Scherzer or Bauer in his prime should be the goal of every able baseball organization. Top starters can make a bad team relevant, and a good team contenders. No matter what, an ace sells more tickets, providing the club with more profit to invest in more talent to make the roster even better.

    At least we know what we're getting in Perez: 5 innings per start, with a career 4.71 ERA. Kluber could be good, bad or injured... In Perez starts, the Red Sox just need to score a run per inning to win.

    While Perez isn't quite an innings-eater, he's not an innings-bulimic, either. Martin is more like an innings-acid reflexor (his, yours, mine...). How many more months before we can all sit back and watch games again, with a cold one and a Pepcid?

    When they go to robot umps, all stadium seats should have a series of color-coded buttons for fans to react to calls. If the majority agrees with a call, the green button turns the robot green and he smiles; majority disagreement turns him red with a frown... and one lucky fan with the winning ticket stub gets to decide at the end of each game if the robot dances around the bases or explodes in centerfield.

    Some posters forget Bloom was never actually in charge of the Rays, so all we can do is speculate how much input -- and pull -- he had in decisions that were made regarding trades, drafts, signings, etc. All we have to go by is what he's done since he's run the Red Sox. I like the focus so far on signing and stockpiling prospects. Not a fan of the bargain bins. Still waiting on impactful MLB acquisitions... Verdugo looks good, but the rest -- Perez, Pillar, Pivetta, Renfroe/Andreise -- were either average and expendable or have the potential of useful roster parts. And I refuse to mention the scroll of openers.

    I have faith in my instincts and I hope I'm proven wrong. The Red Sox have too many question marks right now, and while there should be some periods at the end of a few sentences, I doubt we'll see one exclamation point before Opening Day.

    It sucks if he's good, but I'm not broken up over it because it's just as likely he morphs into Smoltz in his busted Boston final year. When I read Kluber maxed at 90 mph in his showcase, I wondered if he was airing it out one last time for a contract, and might hinder his rehab and hurt his comeback. Do we really want to watch another season with more pitchers in a new "rotation" coming off of injuries?

    Well, you know those large humans, with so much more surface and interior areas of muscles and joints, they're just bound to break down more often than more compact athletes.

    I heard his first move is that any infielder going into a shift has to wear a gorilla suit... and goalie pads... and a ball-and-chain.

    This is a great point, and one we can only assume was on hold while the MLB waited on Manfred and the Covid-influenced schedule. Now that '21 intends to be a full season -- with Spring Training less than a month away -- there has to be an avalanche of moves by all teams that care.

    Flurries can melt by the afternoon. I never expected a blizzard that would lock down the division, but I did expect something measurable -- at least to keep posters busy shoveling it...

    Somebody's gotta say it: the Fiscal Fillies' brand new Baseball Officer addressed an area of need -- the bullpen -- and in two weeks traded for Alvarado and Coonrod, and signed Archie Bradley.

    I found it odd that Bradford said if the Sox had been in on Lindor, that he would've had to move to second. 1. Lindor was arguably the best defensive shortstop in at least the AL; 2. A few years ago on Alex Cora's Puerto Rican National team, Carlos Correa -- another shortstop better than Bogaerts -- moved to third, deferring to Lindor. Latest Semien rumors indicate that he, too, would move to second if the Sox sign him. Bogie is a really good player, but he's not quite his idol, DJeter, whose hallowed status wouldn't allow ARod (a better defender) to take his position.

    I was actually thinking both -- in the "flurry" after they trade Beni, of course. Any below-average team could use another above-average bat and above-average glove...

    I see your fWAR and raise you bWAR: Mookie 10.6, Sale 6.8, JD 6.5, Beni 4.5, X 4.3, Price 4.2 in 2018. According to b-ref's guidelines, 5+ is "All-Star quality" and 8+ "MVP Quality"... Fangraphs, which seems to assign slightly-lower numbers in most cases, gives these ratings in its "rule-of-thumb chart": 3-4 "good player", 4-5 "All-Star", 5-6 "Superstar", 6+ "MVP". ps: either way, the Sox had a lot of good players play well in '18.

    Chavis can field a grounder; he was a left-side infielder. What he's not good at is the pivot turning DPs -- which is becoming a lost art with teams that insist on using modern shifts on every other batter. If anything, third basemen have become even more vital to a winning defense, since half the time they're manning shortstop and need the range to cover two bags. If the Red Sox build a staff around strikeout pitchers (yes, another Tampa trend), then infield D matters less. Sinkerballers who induce a lot of contact crave the Pedroias of the world... if a guy like Dustin -- and his world -- even exist anymore.
