  1. Does that mean you think Bloom won't extend Devers? I mean, all who draw the line about longterm contracts also have to draw the line about losing homegrown stars eventually... right?
  2. He could make some All-Star teams as a good hitter who plays catcher -- and not the more vital good catcher who contributes with the bat. The first guy I think of as a comp -- and why I'm down on Davis as a pick -- is the big load behind the dish in the Bronx (where they'll never win rings again until he's replaced).
  3. I sat about 10 rows up behind home plate at that game; he regularly hit 100 mph on the Baltimore scoreboard. Between Sale's release point and mix of fastballs and sliders, every pitch was a split-second blur. Never seen anything like it... and I'll bet that included the human beings standing in the batter's box. All they could do was guess and swing...
  4. Within three hours he could be the AL's starting 3rd baseman for the All-Star Game.
  5. Perez is a team player, good guy to root for, and the perfect #5/6 starter or eventual lefty innings-eater in the pen. Even after rotation upgrades -- for Richards, and maybe ERod or Pivetta -- Perez may still be useful... and inexpensive.
  6. We want a pitcher, not a belly-itcher!
  7. Get ready for the MLB to release an "investigative" report calling the Astros' pitching coach at the time the "mastermind"... even as reporters publish quotes from Houston front office employees admitting to a system-wide formula they developed using analytics (I won't name the scapegoat coach, but that still won't stop ignorant, biased fans from calling him "lying cheater" the rest of his life).
  8. ... especially if Franchy is part of a platoon at first base and/or as a 4th outfielder. At this point in their careers: Cordero needs to do whatever he can to get back on a big league roster; Duran needs to play every day so when he comes up, it's as a regular in the starting line-up.
  9. It could be something just as simple as this: these Red Sox -- at the virtual halfway mark of the season -- are in first place with the best record in the American League... using Bloom and Cora's guys. Right now they may not see the need for a new full-timer bumping a veteran to the bench. I don't even see Duran getting called up if there's an injury to say, a guy like Santana; Duran is not like Connor Wong...because we all can agree that Duran needs to be playing every day this season -- somewhere.
  10. I'm not disagreeing with how bad Marwin's bat has been. But his value with the glove may even surpass JBJ's in his prime, because Jackie played on good defensive teams. These 2021 first-place Red Sox have the worst defense in the big leagues. Boston leads the MLB in errors and defensive efficiency, and is a -25 in Total Zone Fielding Runs "Above" Average... only the Phils and O's are worse, at -27 and -29, disrespectfully. Chaim may need help from Theo to swing some moves to shore up the D before the deadline... or this club isn't getting very far in October, if it even gets there.
  11. Now I have this image of a giraffe with a Michael Pineda pine tar neck I can't erase...
  12. Maybe Cashman can find a salary dump in Boston. Of course, Bloom would insist we also get Jasson Dominguez.
  13. There's no way Marwin gets cut this year. Not only is one of Cora's guys, but he's actually been as good with the glove as everybody else was supposed to be. Marwin has made better plays than starters at short, second and first. We love Cora, and of course he knows way more about baseball than fans do... but when he said Kike was the best second baseman in the league, most of us knew that statement was made, in part, as a confidence-booster to the player. Marwin's just better, and will be the defensive replacement in late/close games down the stretch.
  14. Sox have the best Garrett. No matter what, he's a letter better than Gerrit.
  15. Devers looked shocked Cole threw him another fastball for a strike. That may explain Rafie's trouble with heaters a month ago -- like the rest of us, he was wondering why anyone would ever challenge him again...
  16. A lot of poster complain watching Marwin hit. But in a red sea of underwater defense, he bobs about the waves. JD just hit one to the Cole-colored seats.
  17. Judge hits HRs to right field all the time, so doesn't get to whine about outside strikes near the corner. Meanwhile, it's 4-0, but Cole has only 35 pitches in 2 IP. ERod is at 857 pitches.
  18. Good line. But I'm envisioning the colored-in diamonds in my scorebook that signify runs.
  19. Ball in the dirt with the Yanks' good catcher... and no stick-em? Rut-row
  20. Go ahead, play the infield in vs. Devers... he doesn't hit the ball that hard.
  21. Melting down like Montgomery Burns trusting Homer to run a nuke plant...
  22. Maybe for some fans, it's not as much the actual number Kike signed for, but that of all Bloom's recruits, Kike got paid the most...(for two years)
  23. So does Tampa, apparently. If we look at recent history for Bloom's Rays, they treat closers as fluid assets to use every season to swap for upgrades. Here are Tampa's yearly leaders in saves since 2013: Rodney, McGee, Boxberger, Colome, Colome, Romo, Pagan, Anderson, Castillo... it's been a different guy every year but one.
  24. I was envisioning someone more unproven, even a minor leaguer, that the front office may be eying as ready to emerge as an MLB weapon. This is only based on recent history with the Rays, who seem to roll out endless no-names in every series who throw 98 mph vs. the Sox. I wouldn't be surprised if Tampa keeps a list of flame-throwers to consider acquiring at every level from every team; Bloom must remember a lot of those targets.
  25. I'm not opposed to it, but Braves' fans would be. Trading the reigning NL MVP would certainly look like surrender and may signal -- not a rebuild, but a revamp -- for underachieving Atlanta. If the Braves are willing to deal, then I'd expect Bloom to expand it to include one of their young arms... Acquiring a star like Freeman also opens up a lot of questions here. Does the 31-year-old have another five years of production approaching his career averages of 28-98-.293-.889? If so, is he the guy Bloom tries to extend longterm? And then... which top-rated pitching prospect does he trade Casas for?
