  1. Come on, Moon - you know pitchers are always ahead of hitters this time of year... if only there was a this time this year.
  2. Sometimes the grass is greener is just shiny paint on artificial turf. I wish I had said that in the 80s (I may have, but can't remember much of that decade).
  3. There's a good chance some in the organization knew that when he was reacquired. No one here has ever said Bradley's even a good hitter, just that he's a big league centerfielder. Career bWAR since 2013, 800 games in CF: 1. Trout, 2. Cain, 3. Jackie Bradley Junior. To be fair, Trout rates almost twice as good as Cain, who rates twice as good as JBJ; also, Kiermaier just missed the minimum. Trout 65.1, Cain 35, Kiermaier 30.4, JBJ 17.6, Pillar 16.5, Kike 15.4 (combined total at all his positions), Hamilton 10.4, Michael Taylor 6.1.
  4. .528 in new uni in new parks vs. new pitchers... .900 in old uni, parks, and pitchers. Some posters might refuse to consider adjustment factors, but does anyone really think a career professional completely forgot how to hit in one year? Maybe Bloom and Cora don't think Jackie is absolutely done at age 32... maybe to them, familiarity breeds content.
  5. Good, that must mean they're close to an agreement, and will need the whole next week to pay all remaining available free agents... ... right?
  6. So then does Bloom have to trade Casas or Yorke? Or is there someone else, like Bello, other GMs crave from the system? Got to give up something to get something, and you can be sure teams like Oakland, Cleveland, Miami and Cincy will hold out dealing until they get a guy they really want... ... unless the Sox are all set with Wacha, Hill and half of Paxton in the rotation, and Barnes closing in another August.
  7. I think he meant DH, if JD is traded. Question: when Bloom deals for a decent starting pitcher and/or a decent reliever -- because we all know he doesn't have enough of either yet -- who is the most expendable trade chip: Casas or Dalbec, Yorke or Downs, Verdugo or Duran, JD and subsidies? I'd say Mayer is untouchable right now... unless they sign Correa; but if Bloom is finally going to spend, wouldn't it make more sense to just use free agent money on priorities, like maybe Rodon and Jansen (though I'm not thrilled by the latter)?
  8. It's true, but bitterness still lingers to the fans we were at the time... I felt bad for Billy Buck, but worse for the diehard fans who knew better. Like those of us who noticed Pedro tap his chest and point to the heavens in '03. The biggest rage I had as a teen fan was after Cincinnati's 9th-inning comeback in Game Two of the '75 Series. Down to their last out, the Reds tied it on an infield grounder, then won it on a double off the fence. Can't take your foot off the throat of a team like that... Sox were one out away from going up two games to none. I knew.
  9. Luke's teaching Rafie how to play first.
  10. Remember this well. The stupid no-DH in NL parks rule left the Red Sox' HR leader on the pine. That was the perfect op to bat Baylor... vs. a good lefty pitcher... removing a bad lefty hitter (Buckner was easily the Sox' worst hitter in the postseason, and arguably in the whole MLB... and yet, let's keep batting him third) I said this in '86: Buckner's E was human, but the image of his pitiful legs for weeks on TV -- impeding his swing, and turning him into a wobbly belly-flopping cripple on the bases, contributed to the ultimate loser label that instantly made him a haunted icon forever when he couldn't even bend over to pick up a grounder.
  11. Detroit. Remember, this was a guy who later refused to return to Boston when the Sox tried to reacquire him for a pennant race; instead, he chose to stay with the Tigers, who were going nowhere. Damon is not my friend.
  12. And Oil Can! Don't kick the Can... though he turned out to be our Dwight Badden.
  13. An expert in the article was saying Ramirez' great value (and contract) really just extends for the next two seasons, through his age 30. Obviously, if he starts to breaks down but still wants big bucks -- which he forfeited when he signed his last team-friendly contract -- then he becomes just another over-priced, over-the-hillish veteran ballplayer. It's a hard call to get maybe only two great years in a swap for a guy like Yorke, whose bat could make him a Pedroia-type for a decade (as a middle infielder who can hit -- not field -- like Pedey, the steadiest second baseman in Boston the past half century at least). But we'd all do that trade if Jose was the missing link to another ring...
  14. Maybe not fodder for the "realistic" thread, but there's a story on the NESN site wondering if the Sox could be players for Jose Ramirez, if the Guards put him on the market. These kind of debates often get scoffed at here, but are at least legitimately scoffable once a pro scribe writes about it. It's better than discussing luxury taxes.
  15. See? These kajillionaires are doing this for the fans!
  16. Maybe... depending on the penalties owners agree to give themselves that players approve of. In lieu of collusion charges, would wealthy clubs rather split up the $360 on locking up say, their top five or six youngsters or prospects longterm? Wouldn't that be a kick to the veterans? "Look guys, we're still spending!" Sure, Betts and Soto chose to bet on themselves, but there are plenty of Acunas, Bregmans and Francos who would take the money now...
  17. It's not like it's a cathedral ceiling, either... more like one in the tunnel of a mine shaft
  18. This may be off-tangent, and I don't even know the attention-span for average entertainment, but it seems like the movie industry, long ago, calculated the optimum time at around 2 hours... anything longer was considered long. The reason I bring this up: I was just surfing through Netflix last night and saw an actual category called 90-Minute Movies -- it must've been invented for busy modern viewers who can't possibly devote any more time that that to watch.
  19. Yep. Doubleheaders were a tradition when games averaged two hours; double your fun on a lazy summer afternoon, hanging around the ballpark, eating and drinking -- at least twice -- running after foul balls out of reach, and elusive autographs between games. The whole experience for two games lasted about 4 1/2 hours... nowadays, that's one game.
  20. Good comp. Though when I was at a Nats game, I noticed fans actually wearing his uni shirt.
  21. They're even worse for pitchers. I couldn't imagine anyone ever offering a longer, worse contract for a pitcher than the one to David Price. And then along came Cole...
  22. Of course not. But front offices have to look at guys that are the best bets, and consider factors that drive consistency, like personality and healthy lifestyles. I've just never been that hung up on body size, not when Stanton and Judge are hurt every year (though I'm not saying they're partying dudes, either).
  23. I don't think Correa is happening because he's just not a priority. Bloom has Xander this season (and to maybe extend), and his best prospect is a shortstop who may be here in a few years (like Bogie and Devers, when they made it at age 20). Actually, locking up a kid like Mayer or who knows, Yorke or Casas, if they hit instant stardom might make more sense for Bloom than pursuing someone like Soto when he's a free agent at age 26 (with eight years of mileage on his bod). The point is none of the first-year types, including Wander, are more proven as an investment than Mookie was in his five+ years in Boston.
  24. Ouch... imagine being described as having the potential to be below-average: teacher who ignores facts, changes test scores, only calls on pets; favorite of bored members, future mediocreintendent.
