  1. Maybe... but what's in those pipes that causes such dreams is legal in a lot of states now.
  2. All part of the recent history that fans hate about this management -- especially, letting the best players go from the best team in Red Sox history. Today is different... no matter how anyone tries to twist it into a repeat of patterns that led to Pablo Sandoval and Carl Crawford.
  3. I knew a couple Red Sox fans -- and not a Yankee visitor just browsing -- would understand my post entirely
  4. The narrative up until yesterday was that the Red Sox would not pay their homegrown fan favorites fair market prices to stay in Boston... ... because the only guy extended since Bogey was re-upped after the 2018 title was Matt Barnes. Things are different now. Times have changed for the better today.
  5. ... and the go-to cautionary contracts for big-time batters whose contracts were too long. My point is that Devers' contract isn't -- he won't be Old Man Bogey limping around San Diego infields (or wherever) into his 40s... at least, not on our dimes.
  6. Try to be imperfectly curt, but never kickham when they're down... gagne with a spoon = always abad idea.
  7. Keep in mind Devers' prime years. The Red Sox are basically paying for hopefully the best seasons of a star player's career: ages 27-32 (give or take). Raffy may be kicking around as a first baseman or DH at the back end of his contract, but only through age 37. For fans worried about another "albatross" Pujols or Cabrera contract, here are 162-game averages of Albert and Miggy from ages 33-37: Pujols -- 31 HR, 109 RBI; Cabrera 25 HR, 89 RBI. Will you settle for something in between?
  8. While I don't have a lot of confidence that the projected starting rotation will catapult Boston back into contention (or even stay together for six months), the one it's replacing finished in dead last place. I also wonder if Turner or Story or Casas can give Raffy enough protection so that anyone will throw him a fastball for a strike before 2024. However, the Devers signing makes the '23 Red Sox already so much better than the '22 squad. All the big-time question mark players are now gone: Bogey, JD, Vaz, Nate -- great Red Sox champions -- but no more clubhouse distractions, worries, wondering, reporter queries, deadline doom, etc., etc. Here I go, playing the star again. There I go, turn the page.
  9. Disagree on principle. Pro ballplayers -- no matter what uniform they're currently wearing -- may be looking at Boston as a desired destination again. The Red Sox want to be players again, and players will want to be Red Sox again. And even if all that is bs from a fan, at least humor the fan... we all want to at least feel our team cares about us as much as we care about it.
  10. The left one -- I'm celebrating with a stout from Left Hand Brewing Co... (Yankee fans dreaming of Raffy aiming for that short porch at the Stadium the next 11 years can now have nightmares of Raffy aiming for it)
  11. Pending physical: my skull; have to have my head examined after hitting the ceiling... Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. Red Sox rep, Winter 2023: "Raffy, we just signed Yoshida for $90 million. How would you like three times that much?" Devers' rep: "Tell you what -- when he gets his first extra-base hit in the majors, I'll already have 300 more. So I'll sign for 300 times his contract."
  13. Red Sox rep, Spring 2022: "Raffy, we see the Braves just signed Matt Olson for $168 million. How would you like $245 million?" Devers' rep: "I'd love it. The Red Sox always take care of their players. And their fans. Let's GO!"
  14. If it was just business, would he hire a guy to pay Story and Yoshida combined what they probably could've locked up Devers for, a year ago? Let me rephrase that: in the past year, Bloom spent $270 million on a defensive whiz who in his first year as a Red Sox struck out at a higher rate than JBJ in 9 Boston years, and a foreigner who has yet to play an MLB game. Do you think Raffy would've signed for that a year ago?
  15. What, you didn't think Bloom would get a perfect exchange, like with all his other trades?
  16. Attention: Red Sox interns. Please relay this post to your bosses... I joined this forum after the 2019 season stressed that the Red Sox would actually lose their best homegrown player ever developed in my 50 years as a fan. I needed a place to vent about what I thought the hiring of Bloom represented (because I don't hang out in bars anymore). After everything I've seen of this franchise and the majors the past three years, I have absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe Boston will sign Rafael Devers longterm for any amount. If somehow it happens, I will be overjoyed and rejuvenated as a Sox fan, with renewed hope that my team's plans are to actually build a winning club again, beginning immediately.
  17. That's when Arroyo transforms into a tall, skinny CBOish bod, and Bloom gets short and stocky with a rugged redbeard visage...
  18. I boo myself when I peel potatoes over the trash can, and peels still shoot onto the floor.
  19. Posts #630 and #631 show MLB's top achievers and top earners at third base. Raffy and his agents can comfortably say he's worth $30+M because of his age and offensive accomplishments. Bloom and his cronies can uncomfortably say he's not even close to Arenado, Machado or Bregman on D, or as good all-around as Ramirez, who can run. Devers' camp can then What-about-Rendon? and Bloom can counter with What-about-Riley? What a revoltin development this is...
  20. I saw a video of a couple guys yelling at Henry in the parking lot. One said, "Pay Raffy!" The other: "Pay anyone... under 40!"
  21. Third baseman WAR 2019-22: Arenado 20.8 Ramirez 18.3 Machado 17.6 Bregman 16.6 Chapman 16.0 Devers 14.0 Riley 12.0 Third baseman AAV (projected for '23 per bb-ref): Rendon $38.6M Arenado $35M Machado $32M Bregman $30.5M Donaldson $21.8M Moncada $17.8M (but appx. $25M for '24/25) Devers $16.9M (projected by MLB.com) Riley $15M (but appx. $22M through the next decade) Ramirez $14M (increasing to $25M by '28) Chapman $12.5M Hayes $10M (then decreasing? through 2030)
  22. Casas and Mayer in the infield, Rafaela and Bleis in the outfield, Bello and Mata on the mound. That could be the core of the next sustained contenders in Boston. All will be paid minimum wage, but will be candidates for reasonable, pre-arb extensions. If that's the plan, the only way any of them gets traded is for others who play different positions but have the same salary considerations.
  23. The Sox are reportedly deep in talks about being shallow in talks
  24. Why -- we already have six fours and fives (but I'm a gin dummy)
