    I know it happens, but Baez was billed as a top five shortstop in his recent free agent class. Where do we think Kike ranks on the list of big league shortstops this year? Or even on the list of good-glove, .230 centerfielders?

    I'm going to say the least informative stat is number of walks to 2023 Devers. If he walks more, does that mean he's becoming more selective, or do opponents realize the Sox have absolutely nobody that can protect him in the batting order (until maybe Duvall shows he can bop again with a bum wrist)? Or does it mean Raffy is adopting Casas' approach, looking only for the perfect pitch, and welcomes the base on balls? But does anyone even want their $300 million dollar man strolling to first every game, on an offensive incident that generates traffic on the bases, but only ever moves it one car at a time -- instead of swinging from the heels as much as possible trying to clear the bags?

    The names already being discussed as trade bait for Boston are all damaged by time, and not really difference-makers in even a Wild Card race. Don't expect any better return than a prospect with maybe one decent asset, like Valdez' bat.

    Maybe the inconsistencies and frustrations are just typical of a .500 team. Most of the roster is full of guys right now in various stages of their careers when most of the time they are not stars, but don't always suck.

    If only Bloom is... If -- as the old adage goes -- pitching is indeed 70% of the game, and starting pitching is at least half of that (based on a meager 4.5-5 innings per start), then Bloom has failed pretty miserably in this most important category: acquiring sufficient young arm depth for his current and future staff. Of the quartet of Bello, Houck, Crawford and Whitlock, only the latter was added to the organization by Bloom. Paxton has been decent, but no one will be surprised by another IL trip or even a deadline trade before the end of the summer. We know Bloom doesn't want to deal any of his hitting prospects, probably until the front office has had enough time to identify potential core big leaguers. So we just have to be patient, and content with yet more one-year free agent signings next winter... in Year Five of the Pretension of Contention in the Bloom Rebuild.

    Come on, we all blathered about losing the face that the franchise claimed was its Number One Priority. Bloom and the boys also claimed he was staying, up until the witching hour when they were suddenly stunned when Bogey left. Nobody is really pining for X anymore because we've learned in the Bloom Era that it's always time to move on from fan favorites. But everyone is lamenting the biggest blunder -- even beyond losing three decent starting pitchers -- and there's no denying this: Bloom still hasn't replaced the Red Sox starting shortstop with an actual starting shortstop.

    I don't have employee lists, but have to assume some current guys have worked for the organization since before Bloom was hired. For example, GM Brian O'Halloran has been around for all four rings this century. If anything, some of us are still waiting for and wondering when Bloom will recruit other like-minded execs from actually successful franchises that share his vision.

    Someone is going to say he hit two homers in his very last game last October and figured something out... like Bloom said Wacha did down the stretch in '21 (or like Kluber didn't in '22). My question is what did JD do differently to have 15HRs in only 200 PA this year? Did NL analytic departments just not watch video of him in a Red Sox uni?

    I saw Yorke from the stands at a game I reported on a month ago. He had the exact same stance as Story last year, and struggled with it. Maybe you missed my post.

    Trevor Story, the guy who draped his bat down behind his back and was often too late bringing it up to the hitting zone last year; he led the NL with 191 Ks in 2017, when he had a 34.4% whiff rate. He fanned 122 times in only 94 Red Sox games before an injury ended his season, but still finished second in team Ks to Martinez' 145. JD's K-rate was 24.3%, Trevor's was 30.8%.

    I don't like it. Story was a K king with it last year, and Yorke and Rafaela will need to adjust their stances if they want to stay in the bigs when they get there vs. nighty 100-mph velo.

    Agreed. Duran is best drilling balls in the gap and flying around the bases -- the type of guy in his prime a line-up needs batting in front of a guy like Casas, in his prime. I don't know if they'll ever bat 1-2, but if the Sox' best hitters in the next half decade are Yoshida, Verdugo and Devers (when he rebounds), with Mayer the best prospect, that's all lefty swingers. The new GM will have to add a couple premium righty bats... among his many priorities.

    AC gave him the ball with a one-run deficit and watched with the rest of us as Kluber gave up eight straight hits. These weren't bloopers and bleeders, but a 4th of July fireworks display of bottle rockets, roman candles and cherry bombs. Amidst the carnage, I actually wondered if the one guy who could've stopped it, chose not to because of some secret animus towards either the player... or the exec who acquired the player.

    Our Opening Day starter?!? The one single offseason addition to the rotation to replace Eovaldi-Wacha-Hill?!? The inning regurgitator with downside?!? He's already done and represented enough to get both the CBO and manager fired. If they cut him now, their use of him is irredeemable. If they keep him, and he somehow rebounds to throw a scoreless middle inning of relief here and there, at least they can pretend to have discovered a redefined role in his solar plexus eclipse.

    A lot of finger pointing today. Most are straight up in the air, with the back of fists aimed at the dugout and front office. But maybe the blame is really on... ... us: Red Sox fans. We're so invested, we type daily about a baseball club, even for half of every year when they're not playing. We still follow them, even when they suck -- which has been 75% of the entire Chaim Bloom Era. Fans of other annual last place teams usually abandon ship until a rebuild puts them back in contention. Red Sox fans, however, are addicted to baseball, and Fenway, and NESN, and absolutely deserve to complain when the product on the field is crap, and the politicians employed by the franchise continually tell us what we're seeing is only part of a means to a beginning. But still we watch, hoping they're not actually lying.
