    It's all laid out there in the Henry scene in Moneyball. He wants to win, just in the most affordable way possible... but not by cutting corners, staying out of free agency, and just hoping/relying on prospects to be pre-arb stars. John Henry wants to win and make money in clever ways -- that's the challenge for a man who has everything.

    Song admitted in a ST interview he is not ready to be a pitcher yet, much less a big leaguer. He wants to be, but right now can't even find comfort in the grips of various pitches. That doesn't sound like a guy that any team, even a cellar-dweller, can afford to carry on its MLB roster even for one day.

    It sounds like he'll be starting in Worcester and then join the big club as soon as one of the older guys breaks down. It makes sense, since they have a lot invested in the veterans, and Bello has options. With a presumably easier schedule the first couple weeks, the Sox may just be saving their best rotation for later late-April/May, when a trio like Sale-Bello-Whitlock can make a statement (in a best-case scenario).

    From the info out there, it appears if the Phils decide not to carry Song all season they can put him on waivers, and if no other club claims him, the Red Sox can take him back for half the Rule V fee (50K). So Bloom could keep Song and still pocket enough Dombro bucks to replace those fake Smartboard markers and erasers he chucks across the room during boardroom presentations on the progress of his trade acquisitions.

    Some poster poopers will say he only faced Triple A batters Sunday, the same peers he dominated last summer. But that list might include future big leaguers -- and any level has trouble with a guy who throws 97 with movement, and commands sinkers, change-ups and sliders. Maybe he won't be an All-Star this year, but Bello will throw some of the best games in the Red Sox '23 season.

    The answer is definitely yes. But on BTV, my trade proposal of the NL saves leader for the Mets' second-best catching prospect (with a "below-average" arm) was met with a resounding Realty Check! ... which means it's the perfect deal in the unreality of Steve Cohen's checkbook offseason. Re. Robertson and Otto, you can tout the patchwork bullpen that the upstart Phillies rode into the '22 World Series all you want, but there's no way the New York Mets spent all that dough on big names this winter to rely on a little name with games in the balance.

    In an article on possible replacements for Edwin Diaz as Mets closer, MLB.com is already speculating, "Perhaps the Red Sox will be willing to part with Kenley Jansen..." Ok, Mets, ready to deal for last year's NL saves leader? After spending half a billion dollars on free agents this offseason, what's a measly top prospect? New York's #1 prospect, Francisco Alvarez is a catcher, and Boston sure could use one... but the Mets' #3 is another catcher, Kevin Parada, #36 on the MLB's Top 100. That position looks like a surplus for Cohen's contenders...

    I think it's a drag that U.S. fans feel like the MLB is more important, but I totally understand not caring as much if you feel not all your best players are participating. It's comparable to the Olympics in that regard, like not sending the NBA All-Stars to crush all other countries. On the other hand, look how crazy the world goes rooting for underdogs whenever they can take down professional powerhouses. There's a reason the 1980 US Olympic hockey team will always be one of the great sports stories in USA USA history.

    I think you may be referring to U.S. fans, because to a vast number of baseball fans of every other team in the final six, this is akin to a hardball World Cup. Fans of Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, Puerto Rico, Cuba... even the eliminated DR, are all agog over this tournament for bragging rights. The WBC is important in promoting baseball across the globe, and you can bet there's increased interest in the sport now in places like Italy, Great Britain and the Czech Republic. Most of the pro guys would already be playing baseball games in Florida or Arizona anyway -- the two U.S. sites for both Spring Training and the WBC. And let's be honest, as much as Grapefruit and Cactus contests are welcomed this time of year, they're basically meaningless as far as keeping score, and even sometimes vapid to watch anonymous replacements taking their sips of big league coffee. Competition and emotion is what really makes the WBC -- or participating and/or spectating in any sports -- fun.

    Pinkass. No wonder Cora gave the ball to Kutthroat Kluber, who once drilled Nunez for swinging too hard -- imagine the audacity of a batter trying to hit a pitch as hard as he can... Hitters are wusses. The last time a guy chucked his bat at a pitcher for pitching too hard (at his ankle) was 50 years ago, and Campy Campaneris got both legs suspended for it... of course, since it was the playoffs, they let him serve the suspension at the start of '73.

    Bloom thought about it, but decided the calculus that would make the most sense for the organization going forward is to wait another 197,280 minutes until just before the trade deadline expires for the optimal return. That iteration would be the most awesomest.

    I do recall Bloom preheating the oven before the season began by stating the need for a RH'd hitting OFer, last year. Then he never got one... (and we were all talking about at least a platoon power-hitter to replace Renfroe's HRs)

    He said he loves the manager for deciding not to play him and instead letting him watch. I was just remembering a team and a guy where those feelings were opposite. There may be other players on teams at various levels that can relate.

    Tapia swings lefty. They're keeping Refsnyder because he's righty and crushed southpaws last year. Cora already said he'll play Ref vs. lefties on days he rests Verdugo, Yoshida or Casas (I don't how the latter works, when Turner plays first...DH?). Re. Alfaro, it's always good to keep a guy around who bats clean-up for his national team in a world tournament, and was MVP of the winter league. David Ortiz was MVP of the winter league right before his first season cleaning up in Boston in 2003...
