    The commish and his bosses will make sure to only approve a new buyer committed to restoring the Red Sox to MLB flagship status, because Boston's popularity tied to its success means more money in all their pockets. There was some controversy the last time the Sox were sold connected to such a notion.

    Over their prize free agent acquisition of this winter -- the one they'll want to run out there to show the world how fixed he is -- the guy they signed for more AAV than any other pitcher contract since the Dombrowski days?

    This statement from Brez is alarming: “I don’t see financial resources as a limiting factor,” said Breslow. “I think that was something that was clear in the conversations that we had." Was Craig deceived or misled? Maybe they showed him the books and he saw the financial resources, but when he went to use them he found his account was frozen -- like by the IRS, or because he was scammed... by the Puppet Master. Brez also said he'd be willing to trade prospect capital -- and technically we can't call him out on that, since he did give up Santos and Robertson for Tyler O'Neill (though they seem more lower case than capital).

    Some posters may say the harsh complaints in the media about this Red Sox offseason are just typical blather from the likes of Shaughnessey, Tomase and Massarotti. Others might say their words just reflect the overall mood of Red Sox Nation. Both may be right. But when Breslow was hired, does anyone think the public -- if not deceived -- was at least misled into thinking there were going to be some big changes made on the big league roster this winter? If not a major upheaval, then at least some big time upgrades in talent for the 2024 Sox? We all hope Grissom becomes a star hitter, but even though he told his last GM he can pitch, there hasn't been any word from Brez and Bailey that he's in their mound plans. So there are still openings in the rotation for #1 and #2 starters. At least we know there will be a third game this season, when Bello takes the ball...

    Next weekend. Curiously, there is no longer any mention of this once-gala on the front page on Red Sox.com. This was found under the link Red Sox Press Releases: "Jonathan Papelbon to host Winter Weekend welcome event"... ... did anyone in the front office hear what he actually said about the front office last summer? Fans can only hope he isn't muzzled (though we know NESN will never replay anything controversial he says)

    Screw that, he had a chance to bring in many more prospects at deadlines for those guys, Eovaldi, Sale, Paxton, you name it -- and didn't. When you already know your obituary will read "the man who traded Mookie Betts" why not at least try to improve your Boston legacy by dealing off players who'll probably fall off the Hall of Fame ballot in their first year of eligibility.

    My late step-father played some pro ball in the 1950s, then played and managed semipro for decades after that. Once, when I was breaking in a new glove, he got all nostalgic: "In baseball, nothing like a good glove that you like." He told the story of this legendary infielder whose glove was so old and floppy, it accidentally got thrown away. "The guy went in the dumpster looking for it... and he found it. Second baseman. Hall of Famer..." I correctly guessed Mazeroski, then noted he wasn't in Cooperstown (yet). The retort: "Well, he should be!" I'll take his word for it. He said Maz' hands were so fast and sure on DPs it looked like he barely touched the ball on the transfer. Qualitative data.

    A lot of this was also Moon's wishful thinking a few years ago, but after four winters they beat the spark out of him... ... and that's a sin by Red Sox management, sucking the life even out of their staunchest optimistic fans.

    Enough conjecture about facts -- industry sources, beat reporters, defeated bloggers... the only facts in the offseason are when the ink is dry on signed contracts or done deals. Facts: 5th-best team AL East dumps oft-injured pitcher, part-time infielder, and centerpiece of worst trade in Red Sox history; acquires bat-first infielder, reliever, and oft-injured outfielder. And signs starting pitcher with ERAs of 4.90 and 4.88 the past two seasons. Rev the motor all you want, but you're going nowhere stuck in neutral.

    Except if Giolito stills stinks, the Red Sox have to pay him another $19M in 2025... you know, the year some fans think the FO is really saving up for to actually go for it.

    Brez said if one of them helps him make a good trade, that exec can then go work for another team. But if it's a bad trade, the Asst. GM has to stay in the Red Sox front office for at least another offseason.

    Thanks for the advice, but you're either missing the whole point or are still on board with the guise of competing that the front office can no longer sell to most of the fanbase. You're thankful he might have a good year and leave, so we can get a draft pick? Great, maybe the pick becomes a prospect who can make the majors and contribute in 2030. In the meantime, if Giolito is good, why is it good in any way that we'll lose him? Isn't the goal to keep good players? Losing good players just perpetuates the loser mentality of a club that celebrates staying below the tax threshold.

    Whether they fix him or not, one year with an opt-out just means Giolito's another place-holder. Big news of the day is that the Sox promoted another employee to Assistant GM -- that makes FOUR more, backing Ace CBO Breslow. Yet, where are the core starting pitchers for the rotation of the next great Red Sox team? Richard Fitts... does anyone else?

    My eye tests reveal 24-25 vision: forget about who the Red Sox didn't sign -- the Giolito contract tells us all we need to know about how they view the next two years. If Giolito is good in '24, he's as good as gone, opting out... unless anyone in the industry thinks Boston will give him more money to stay (ha, what a joke). But the worst part is if Giolito sucks like the last two years, and knows he can't make more money in the market, then he has to stay for 2025. What? Why would any full-throttle all-in championship contender want to guarantee a bad player an additional year -- unless they're not really full-throttle/all-in/champ-contending... but just want to field a team so they can overcharge fans to attend their debacles?!?!?!?

    If the Red Sox do somehow sign or trade for two good starting pitchers, I won't really care if they fill other holes or upgrades this winter. Soler or Duvall or JD or Manny or Jimmy Foxx aren't going to make this roster a World Series team, but an actual big league starting rotation will go a long way in putting Boston back in the direction of heading there... maybe next year, maybe the one after that, but it has to start with starters.

    I'd like both, please. "Ok, Sir, let me read your order back to you: that's a #2 Stroman and a #3 Imanaga, to go along with what's already on your tray -- a #3 Bello, #4 Crawdad, and #5 Giolito. And my manager says if you don't like your #5, you can have another one next year... but if you do like, we're not serving it anymore."
