  1. ARod eloquently summed it up on the pregame: "The Yankees' using Weaver and Holmes every game showed their fatigueness."
  2. For any kid who almost grew up half a century ago, the following declaration is non-negotiable: the dragon teeth skeleton seeds in Jason and the Argonauts produced the most intense TV battle scene of the Sixties and Seventies, right up there with Wolfman vs. Dracula in the castle balcony with Frankenstein stumbling around Abbott and Costello.
  3. I knew I could count on you to point out my typos, but can't believe you didn't catch my spelling on the arsenic tonguesten Verdugo compound resulting in poisonous tung.
  4. In evaluating any trade, there is also qualitative data to consider. I'm not a scientist, but in regards to overall clubhouse chemistry, the addition by subtraction of Verdugo may be represented by these elements: C - (AR + T) = HeP Translated in guinea pig latin: Carbon (element that forms the most compounds; in other words, team) minus Arsenic and Tungsten (poison tongue) brings Helium and Phosphorus (uplifting glow!).
  5. My forehead is passive recessive... ... suspecting MLB sneaking juiced balls back into the playoffs -- again.
  6. Nope, but it gave me hope. Still needed three more... and then we'd never have to watch Fox clips of Babe, Bucky, and Boone again. OOPS -- I meant Fox would never again show Brock Holt's CYCLE in YANKEE STADIUM in '18, and the Nunez-Pearce ALDS-clinching play, and Eovaldi beating NY AGAIN in the '21 WC!!!!!
  7. It's ok. Someday our ancestors will read Tom Warner's memoirs, where he'll say he was, too.
  8. Not surprising: the seven best players in WAR since 2020 play today in the Final Four. https://www.mlb.com/news/shohei-ohtani-aaron-judge-lead-star-studded-mlb-playoffs-slate Also, it's not surprising that all are also well-paid, earning current market value for their stardom.
  9. In the past year, I saw a Bellhorn who became more aggressive towards the front office, and more decisive with posts. MVP, notin, Old Red, Max are more regressive, as oppressive to each other as they are to Sox ownership. Moon is depressive, finally giving up predicting another John Henry Wave of winter spending... ... but we've all lost our buoyancy, waist-deep in the ocean, peering expectantly at the horizon for that perfect body-surfing wave -- "not this one, the next one!" -- sorry, boys, it's low tide. Time to head back to the beach and dry off (5Gs hiding in the realm of digressive).
  10. But can Sam Kennedy convince you that adding Kikuchi, Hoffman and Treinen will make the Sox a winning club again? With those three in '25, they could go 82-80!
  11. Bloom was at least smart enough to know what he got himself into. Declaring the Red Sox wouldn't be as good after trading Mookie or calling the club "underdogs" to justify not making any major deadline moves weren't the words of a CBO proud of his actions or inactions. Maybe it was Bloom's way of speaking in code to the fans and admitting he was just following orders. Ultimately, ownership got sick of his smartmouthing and gave him the axe.
  12. How is that so many Red Sox leaders suck so badly enough in the eyes of John Henry that they need to be fired -- and almost immediately after they all land similar jobs elsewhere in the industry? After awhile, even a megalomaniac staring down into a pond has to recognize the watered-down image staring back.
  13. #2 was also speculated by some media members as a main reason Dombro was eventually canned... ... which, if true, may explain why Bloomslow may be directed by the lifers in the front office to shape recent rosters in their own images (where lifers = lifeless).
  14. I dunno why, but this post made me think of offering Bogaerts a one-year extension, when the other five best shortstops on the market were getting half-decades plus at new market value. Maybe it was the same people in charge pulling the levers -- unless we all still believe Bloom was just an isolated D-bag (not Diamondback).
  15. Who would even interpret a talksox post that way, except bored or bitter fans whose team isn't even in the postseason, and are just looking for something semantic to jump all over on their screens. But if LA makes the World Series with Ryan Braiser as an opener -- taking a regular turn in the Dodgers' rotation -- it sure will make it easier for reluctant spenders to say they don't need to blow $325 million on a Yamamoto, when less than two percent of that can get you there, too.
  16. As an informed fan, I would be remiss if I wasn't intrigued and interested in Scott, and plan to closely monitor his status as the market develops throughtout the offseason, using all available resources to keep abreast of competitive offers -- as long as they make sense (and we don't lose phone or internet services).
  17. Conveniently ignore that Henry can dismiss that entire list except Braiser, who is getting paid $4.5 million and opened Game 2 of the LCS. JH -- if actually watching the playoffs at all, and still all about beating the system (that he helped sustain 20 years ago) -- probably already called or texted Craig about Braiser and not spending kajillions on the others. Root for the Mets, Sox fans.
  18. With the tepid AL Central offering absolutely zero threat to keep the Yankees out of the World Series, there is a real chance the final round for 2024 rings and banners will come down to a New York-New York showdown. Hate to say this, but maybe it will be Sox fans' best hope for ownership to once again invest in legitimate pitching talent. Of the Final Four right now, only the Yankees and Mets feature starting rotations of actual starting pitchers. The Yanks paid top dollar for Rodon and Cole, among others. The Mets signed Quintana, Manaea, Severino and Senga (none broke the bank, like with Scherzer and Verlander, but those flops didn't stop the club from spending on MLB starters, either). Imagine, if instead, Cleveland and LA managed to make it to the World Series -- with scrap heap meatballers ... or RYAN BRAISER as an OPENER?!? John Henry would feel justified to cut corners for another half decade. And the forum will feature more winters of daily posts arguing about market values that don't exist in Boston.
  19. I'm not surprised he left the Red Sox' yellow uniforms, but his new team colors include both yellow and pinstripes. Ugh... At least the Pads still wear camo once in awhile, for guys who want to blend into the desert, ashamed from wearing yellow and pinstripes.
  20. Maybe you hit on Dombro's pros and cons: great at signing elite veteran talent, not so good at extending young talent at slightly-below projected market prices... (in other words, making offers a pre-arb star shouldn't refuse when he can be rich for life, even if he blows out a knee or snaps an ankle is never again good as new.) Mookie was always lowballed -- $200M when he was worth $300M, then $300M when he was worth $365M -- and his mother was always the first cousin of ex-big leaguer Terry Shumpert, so she maybe knew and was made aware of her son's true value. But before efforts to lock up the Red Sox' best all-around player since George Herman R., there were established primetimers like Price -- who Dombro highballed. Then again, the one young guy the Phillies chose to ink longterm was Scott Kingery, now a 4A regular at age 30. That decision may have led to the firing of the previous Philly GM... and/or the hiring of Dave D -- who may or may not have been told to take his chances on more sure things.
  21. Moreland and Nunez hit good pinch-hit home runs that helped win two World Series games. That's good enough for anybody. Pearce was World Series MVP, then tried to play all banged-up for one more year when he had to retire at age 29. He also got paid by Boston that last, lost season -- for around the same amount as the checks Manny once forgot in his glove compartment. John Henry and Co. probably just viewed the Pearce ext. as a reward for his contributions to winning a ring, Kinsler couldn't hit a fastball anymore... but 3 out of 4 ain't bad.
  22. According to the stat Total Runs Saved, the '24 Red Sox had the two worst catchers in the American League: Jansen at -11 and Wong at -16. Combined, that equates to -27 -- on the negative side of "saved" ... ... Oxford lists the following antonyms for saved: endanger, waste, fritter away. Translated into balltalk: Sox catchers endanger their pitchers, waste fans' time watching, and fritter away hopes of preventing 27 more foes from crossing the plate. Over 162 games, those 27 gift runs represent an additional 17%. If Boston didn't have catchers who gave away runs -- even if they saved zero tallies -- the team average of runs against per game would be almost league-average.
  23. Averages are overrated. It's all about metrics, now (kilometers to go before I nap). All that matters is a team's WOPBL -- Winning Or Playoffs Beats Last. Henry acoloytes and acoheavies alike just. want. our Sox. to be woppable.
  24. As a nostalgic old-timey fan, I go back to last century in the 70s-80s-90s and a lot of good Red Sox teams loaded with star players. Many had winning records and contended for division crowns and making the postseason. There was plenty to cheer for, and that's what they had to show for it. Winning rings this century doesn't change my outlook into Yankee elitism by deeming each subsequent season without a World Series title a total failure. Phillies Nation is crazy in its prime right now. Some frustrating endings -- which face every fanbase but one every year -- but Philly is always going for it, with a GM and owner showing no signs of letting up (and not half-assing like BS Boston).
