    Definitely not Bromance. True Grime? A IG? Posters socially floating in faceless cyberspace may never meet someone in person who's always lived at the top of the tower and received nothing but praise -- until suddenly faced with a flaw or two... ... the adjustments can be monumental, even world-altering (in places like Red Sox Nation).

    Maybe it's hard to fathom how crushing one single blow to a young man's ego can be to the guy who has always been the hero growing up, who blasts his way through the minors, becomes an instant star in the majors, and gets paid more money than anyone in the history of a franchise that is over a hundred years old.

    Maybe our concerns just reflect that state of modern baseball. The two worst things to watch: bullpens losing leads and games, and batters constantly striking out trying to get the runs back. Happens to every team, and so do the game-losing home runs that always seem to characterize late-inning blown saves. Put it this way: how many bullpen debacles do we remember that serve up a singles fest? It's usually a bomb, preceded by a walk, with maybe a dumb error thrown in (and away). Es suck to watch, too, but unless they're epidemic, seem easier to excuse as players being human beings... though mistakes like batters swinging and missing the same pitches over and over, or pitchers missing the strike zone over and over seem less tolerable.

    They hurt his feelings. Ok, no more. The three words or initials for ___ ___ ___ have been typed so many times on this forum the past two months (because we all know Spring Training doesn't matter), that they're not small parts of any size posts anymore. The fact is, if a guy like Houck sucks for a month, there's no getting around that he sucked for a month. That's a chunk of a season, especially at a time when every club wants to have a good start at building momentum. Well, last night our All-Star starter had a good game. So Let's GO!!!

    Because Bloom signed Story to be the longterm shortstop (Raffy told me)! Remember the quote: "I can play second base for one year..." ... not sure if Trevor actually said it in '22 (maybe a poster said it, in a claim 2B was easy, like 1B) -- but it implied he'd be taking over at short as soon as Bogey left (which was intentionally expedited with a lowball offer... until they kinda sorta changed their minds the next winter).

    There may be an irony to make room for Anthony and Mayer. For Anthony to play regularly in Boston, the Red Sox might trade an outfielder, but it's more likely they bench Rafaela or platoon him with Abreu. To make room for Mayer, however, the only real hope -- barring injuries -- is that they have to trade an outfielder, so they can shift Campbell to CF and open up 2B. Story can strike out 20 times in a row, but he'll never be benched for a prospect during the season. He is a veteran leader on and off the field, and any perceived disrespect by the front office would be too disruptive in the clubhouse... ... especially if Casas gets in front of a microphone or two, and pontificates.

    Sometimes it seems like Ceddanne's approach to ABs is to swing hard at every pitch and hope just one hits his bat and goes fair.

    As far as SSSS (spectator small sample size), I prefer the flights at a taproom over the appetizers. Of course, after a few small glasses of beer, all the rest automatically taste good.

    March is such a SSS for games that count in MLB -- even the size of oranges and grapefruits still growing in ST FLA. The only LSS are the baseballs to Japanese pitchers pitching in the majors for the first time. In the other ST league in AZ, cactus are normal size. But the snails that hit the streets at night? XLSS!!!!

    Some guys are definitely slow starters, but are any notoriously slow enders? Healthy players, that is... No stats referenced here, but isn't just about every position player in baseball a better hitter in warmer weather? Put it this way: can anyone remember a guy at any level who'd rather bat on cold rainy April nights instead of hot sunny July afternoons? (talking about athletes in shape who don't get dawged in the dog days)

    The Red Sox were so consistent with their approach of striking out and leaving runners on base for a month, that this sudden teeny tiny extended weekend of Billy Sample size must be an aberration. Don't worry, after Toronto, Boston faces four of the AL's top pitching staffs in a row: Minny, Texas, KC and Detroit in a 12-game ample size. If everyone in the batting order pulls homers and doesn't K through May, I'll cheer for every Little Leaguer who finishes a swing staring into a dugout over their front shoulder. But it's not even next year yet. Rehire Fatse and Lawson!

    Red Sox have scored 30 runs in their three game win streak. Boston batters have only struck out 15 times in the trio, with eight home runs the past two games. Is this a new offensive approach or the product of facing sub-par pitching? Only one HR has not been pulled -- an oppo shot by Kristian Campbell. It's all good until it's not, but for fans of more contact and less whiffs, the words of player development director Brian Abraham are unsettling. When discussing Roman Anthony, who has been hitting the ball harder all over the field than just about anyone in the system, Abraham recently mentioned the one thing he wanted baseball's #1 hitting prospect to improve on is pulling the ball in the air. Isn't that approach the biggest cause of the Red Sox' team strikeouts? Isn't a guy who instead crushes pitches gap-to-gap exactly the type of batter Boston needs to balance the line-up?

    When considering if Rafaela could be a future cornerstone worthy of a longterm contract, the Red Sox most likely looked at Ceddanne's improvements in batting at High A, Double A and Triple A in '22 and '23. During those summers we were told he already carried Gold Gloves in CF and SS. He always had extra-base pop, and hit a combined .299 with an .880 OPS in Greenville and Portland at age 21, then a combined .302 and .870 in Portland and Worcester at 22. Rafaela also had a consistent K to BB ratio of about 4 to 1. Who knew it would balloooooon to 10 to 1 in The Show? Be encouraged. According to bb-reference, Ceddanne's Most Similar Batter through age 23 is borderline Ineligible Bachelor Steve Garvey... ya, that was before Garv was good -- but two years later he was NL MVP!

    O's went for the salty old dog, but getting Klubered means he's not been worth his salt. His arm doesn't need to soak in epsom salts as much as it needs smelling salts.

    Campbell actually deserves more credit as the individual hero who shot out of a cannon. The front office has spent more time giving high fives for packing the explosives and lighting the fuse. He did it.

    What has Dobbins done to keep getting sent back down? Besides, of course, not signing an exorbitant contract the org is desperately trying to get some value out of, and not being a big leaguer long enough to not have options? Sorry, for a minute there I was thinking of what's best for the team.
