  1. Throw in the one game tiebreakers in '48 and '78, and it will remind you why the wild card play-in game is a total crapshoot way to chase a championship.
  2. SS, some of your classics will "never grow old !"
  3. If Erod can stay awake, he should get at least 6 innings in, and be eligible for a win.
  4. Most MLB playing fields cover about 3+ acres of ground, plus foul teritory. The fact that 9 players can cover it with balls in play from 1 second to about 5-6 seconds and hold offenses generally in check is a wonder. Over the years , did the fields get sized to the players ability to hit it out or did the stadium builders only have so much ground available ? Fenway is a good example of a "lot" where the field had to adapt to what was available and the wall became the factor for the players/pitchers to adapt to. Totally criminal that in all the Yawkey-Williams-Yaz eras they could never win it all for 86 years.
  5. It is amazing when you see one guy get on a streak of good hitting and they can bat about .500 with power for a couple weeks ,. Then you have the opposite where some can't buy a hit for weeks. That's baseball, where an All-Star fails 70% of the time.
  6. Primetime was pretty good also. In the 50's thSox and Celtics shared Gene Conley ( I think), but he wasn't all world like the other ones named.
  7. Cabrera still hitting .300+ , but must be a lot of singles. Looks pretty beefy, a la Panda
  8. I do think he is developmentally challenged. Nobody could resist changing his ways for as long as he has intentionally
  9. A shutout pitching effort by Erod will assure the win tonight. I do think the Sox need to sweep this series and go 5-1 prior to A-S game. Still 2.5 out of the second WC slot with a difficult upcoming schedule during post A-S July. 12 of 19 games vs Dodgers, Rays, Yankees.
  10. Cora says Benintendi has not been the same since ST. I hope for his sake he is not ill, but maybe the idea of being the leadoff hitter made him feel queasy .
  11. Ryan Carpenter will last about 3 innings, throwing lots of pitches
  12. It could be that no other GM will work with him for a favorable deal this early in July. Wait until post A-S break to see who is a seller and a buyer. The Sox need 5 of 6 pre A-S IMO, and got 2 of 3 in Toronto by the skin of their teeth. A PH HR by Marco ? Thank you, Moon, for your faith in Marco. Now you need a sweep in Detroit to make progress towards the #2 WC. Almost is laughable to say that about this roster.
  13. Where would this team be without Rafi Devers right now ?
  14. Curveballing f***wits, despite their stats, cannot survive as serious end of game pitchers. They do not have command of the strike zone. An essential win , with another huge game by rafi and a key really big hit by Marco. f***ing pitching had next to nothing to do with the win nor the series win.
  15. Why is this concept so hard to accept ? It is a business. Betts will look to take 110% of what the world will offer him. he is streaky year to year. I thought JDM was the MVP of the 2018 WS season., not Betts. Sell Betts future while it has value to Boston and move on. BTW, I think this player is a dead end like Chris Sale and Benetendi will be.
  16. The 2019 team has simply failed, including guys like Sale, to whom future significant contract commitments have been made. A reset/rebuild is much more likely than some misguided lurch towards a play-in date. The key guy who could return real value is still Betts (not Beni) . The team will owe him at least $20 million for 2020 and then get zip from him after that season. Convert mookie niow to possibly 3 MLB caliber players, who do not currently exist within the Red Sox system.
  17. Agreed. Betts/Benintendi? several others who can walk and chew gum should be on the market and have their value tested.
  18. I asked several weeks ago, who do you start in the play-in game, if you make it that far. It sure as hell is not Sale . Most likely David Price, with all other hands on deck, with no regards as to how the team wins a series from a pitching POV. This 2019 team is deadwood at this point.
  19. Teams rebuilding or short of money can only consider lower priced salaries or young guys under team control. Pearce is off this list for all obvious reasons. Nunez ,likewise. Beni and Jbjr could return equivalent value. Barnes is one of the relievers you are looking ofr. Maybe Brasier too. Moreland is done from the Sox POV. Holt is worth holding onto.
  20. Yes, this year will not see any significant moves Do you want to make major roster moves for the opportunity to play a one game play-in ?? Take your anything can happen hopes to the dump.
  21. Keep living in 2018. It will make you feel better
  22. 3 run tater from Nunez ?
  23. After the 2 out bloop single to Tellez was when Cora needed to pull him. Not just hindsight---but cumulative experience watching Sale with 2 outs for several games now.
  24. Vazquez looks like he learned 2 strike hitting from X. Now need a bomb, plus one more
  25. Illinois, they may not be able to pitch well, but it looks like we have 9 outs to score 3 or more runs, after scoring 3 in 6 against an opener and a rookie.
