Understand that even with the recent winning over good teams, a lineup featuring Enmanuel hitting #2, Ref at #3 , Dom Smith in the mix is not necessarily indicative of a good balanced roster. -
Valdez hurting them tonight. Chases a 2-0 pitch for a popup with 1st/3rd no outs. Should not be hitting in the #2 slot anyway, despite recent success. then Refsnyder chases a high pitch for the K. Good thing Devers is up.

Meanwhile, this is a snoozer of a game in Toronto. Red Sox offense is not sharp, and Tanner had one bad inning to give up the lead. Odd to say , but they are missing Hamilton, and Duran is K'ing .

I think you are an attorney. Have you never read the disclaimer on every investment prospectus ? Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Actually most players go through 3-5 years of declining abilities after reaching 30 years old. It's only the rare ones who continue or actually improve on their career stats. Forunately, Boston is reloading with younger talent and may have a sustainable core for the next 5 years, sort of like a nuclear reactor.

Utility player, of which you need at least 1, if not 2. Hamilton has probably the inside lane over Gonzalez if David can finish the year in a consistent fashion at SS. There is a $2M club option on Refsnyder for 2025, and I bet they sign him up for that price. Then you have the #2 catcher, currently McGuire , who will be in arb #3 I believe. So 1 bench slot left on a `13 man position player roster . Probably come down to Valdez vs Gonzalez. Keep in mind there will be some other youngbloods looking to break through next Spring, Anthony, Teel (?), Mayer (?). Sorry Story and Gruesome Grissom will be back as well ( for a short while) Yoshida kind clogs the Red Sox colon , ability wise and money wise, unless he starts hitting .350 OBP and .800 OPS for his $18M salary. My advice, carry Yoshi into the winter and see if a multiplayer deal pops up, be prepared to pay about $12M of his money, even if he hits well over last 3 months.

I would wager that after 40 more games, it will not be conclusive as to whether the Sox need to sell or go for more talent to finish 2024. On the cusp of or in the WC, I say he tries to add talent, a pitcher and any other position suffering from injury at the time. But nothing to go above the Lux Tax line. If the Sox slip 6 or more out of the WC race, the expiring contracts are likely to get traded away including O'Neill, Jansen and Martin. Probably a low yield on the surface , but maybe restocking at Portland level. -
MVP, your recency bias distorts the long picture on Mr. Bassitt. Why would those last 5 starts have any more bearing on tonight's probabilities than , say, his MiLB record in 2013. All said facetiously of course, but the quantity of electrons that get used on this site to justify the current abilities of certain players always amazes me. For example, Trevor Story or Vaughn Grissom, what have you guys done for this team in, say 2024, which if my research is correct is the season we are currently competing in ?

Key game in this series with Tanner Houck looking to impose his will on the Jays . His opposing pitcher is C. Bass(itt) , who has a mixed record ( 6-6) ; 3.56 ERA; 1.40 WHIP) but is a large fellow at 6'-5" . 35 year old RH'er who has been much sharper in his last 7 outings. Red Sox can take the series with another win behind their best pitcher. New England sports adds its 13th major professional title in the 21st century , so here's to the Champions all. As the fans say, no time for losers !

I should have made it clearer--the real point is how ( & when) do you call the Yoshida signing on par with some of the bad deals of the last 15 years. Would it be too painful to JH to just pay him off and give him away ? Yoshi's thumb pain will be chronic for the rest of the season, maybe like O'Neill's knee. It would not be inconceivable to basically bench Yoshi , use only as a PH and try to move him over the winter. Every comment on O'Neill contains the phrase ( "If healthy") . When Abreu returns shortly, He will be put back in RF and may take a while to get back to MLB speed . He and Ref will likely platoon vs LH'ers. A RHB that can play SS and 2B or 1B would not be a wasted move near the deadline. Casas may or may not get fully over his injury without a recurrence or an altered swing .

Lots can happen between now and the trade deadline. The current winning trend only confuses what to do for Breslow. Should become clearer after the A-S game as to whether the Sox pitching and hitting can stay sharp, and significant injured guys ( Abreu/Casas) make a strong comeback. If the Sox keep winning at around a .550-.600 clip, then they at least have developed some talent , now at the MLB level, who could bring some interest, while improving the bench strength. Plenty of time over the next 6 weeks to sort this out. In terms of need, barring other injuries would be another RH bat to effectively take Yoshida's role, but how do you make that dump ? A starter and a LH reliever would not hurt going into Aug/Sept.

It looks like the injury bug which eliminated Story and Grissom, had a benefit. The Sox learned that Hamilton, Gonzalez and Valdez could all play to a functional; level, given enough reps. Along with Refsnyder, and McGuire , the bench actually shows good strength. Combine with the 3 or 4 young guys on WooSox/Portland for 2025/26, this group could be getting serious. As often mentioned, maybe a couple pitchers could be added to complement the position players. This optimistic assessment does not , however, cover 1B where Casas is missed. Bobby D and Dom Smith aren't the answer there

Pivetta helps the BP by getting 21 outs interspersed with a couple rocket shots, but overall a winning effort.

Very good defense has helped Pivetta get through 6 with only Turner ripping him.

Agreed. As hard as it is to find starting pitching, Nick Pivetta has limited upside. He will plug a slot in the lower end of the rotation but ......maybe 2 or 3 years at $10MM is his ceiling.

Nick has one job tonight, given a 4 run lead early. Protect that lead through 6 innings. Let Slaten, Martin and Jansen get the lockdown.

It was really directed more at his overall performance through the season . He has been dominating at times, but not often. Would you sign him as a #4 starter to an extended contract ?

AC managed to squeeze 6 RH bats into the lineup ( per MLB site) against the LH'er Kikuchi. Duran LF Refsnyder RF O'Neill DH Devers 3B Wong C ( McGuire must be rested by now) Romy Gonzalez 2B Dalbec 1B ( ready for a big breakout night) Hamilton SS Rafaela CF Interesting lineup grouping at #8,9, and 1. 3 speedsters but facing a LH pitcher . I have often thought that giving #8 and #9 to automatic outs is not a good strategy . These guys on base in front of #1-4 may be a better idea. We'll see.

Nick Pivetta taking on the Blue Jays , a barely sub.500 team ( 35-36) who bested the Guardians this past weekend. Yusei Kikuchi tossing LH'ed for the Jays. Yusei is not great, typically a 5 inning pitcher with decent stats 3.24 ERA and 1.23 WHIP Boston had a great week going 4-2 over the Phillies and Yankees , now need to keep it rolling. After the Jays, the boys go to Cincinnati (sub .500) for 3, then back to Boston for 3 more BJ matches. You would like to think that this a 9 game stretch where the Sox could make a decided move towards being consistently a winning team. Add 3 more series wins to last week and that may be happening . Good news is that Chris Martin may be back Tuesday and ready to pitch, mentally and physically.
