  1. I highly doubt Shawaryn ever cracks the Sox rotation aside from a spot start. Sox don't really have any starters in the system. The two best bets are Mata, Groome and Houck. One of those guys might profile as a reliever (Houck) one might be more of a BOTRS (MATA) and the guy with the highest upside is starting to show questions about his ability to stay healthy. The Sox legacy of not developing starters may very well continue into the foreseeable future. And that's ok, you can still have a kick ass farm system without developing starters, and the Sox have shown you can trade away guys to build your roster where you are weak and built a 100+ win team.
  2. Ok, so if all stats alone are bad stats, then I don't disagree with you at all. I guess I'm more of a the glass is half full type of guy with WAR.
  3. Ockimey is also a first base only profile. Funny, if he could play a plus SS, C, or CF, he'd probably be a top 100 prospect in all of baseball with his bat. It's good, but you almost need to be great if you're a first base only profile.
  4. I don't think anyone has ever said WAR was flawed, the point is there isn't a better singular stat.
  5. So.......you can't name a stat at better evaluating a player?
  6. WAR is Obviously a hot topic that always drums up a good conversation with conflicting views. Personally, I've always liked to use rWar for position players and Fwar for pitchers.
  7. We've seen a few similar situations over the last few years of young players struggling at the onset of their MLB careers, or during their first full seasons. The problem is, that sometimes young guys struggle. They are in a spot where they have little left to learn in the minors and the only way they're ever going to learn and adjust to hitting mlb pitching is to go through the trails and tribulations of a full season. Some times they will struggle for a 1/2 a year or a full year and come back strong and sometimes they will sink and never learn to swim (e.g. will middlebrooks).
  8. I'm optimistic on both of them, power is a good tool to have. If anything else develops with it it's easy to carve out a MLB career. But I just can't get over Dalbecs K rate. You have to make contact for your power to be worth anything and if he's K'ng more than 33% of the time in the lower minors. They're also the same age at the same level but Chavis has missed a bunch of time the last two seasons. He could easily be in the majors today or in Pawtucket knocking on the door if he didn't get suspended. Again, two good assets to have, Sox will be lucky and benefit greatly if one of them pans out. Chavis has a little bit of swing and miss in his game too, and I'm not sure he has the height to play fist base, which I'm sure is not uber important.
  9. Can he play 2nd???
  10. His current line in Pawtucket is .172/.294/.241. I don't think he's an option right now. Tzu-Wei Lin is the better option at this point, and I think he can give you plus defense at multiple positions.
  11. It was a late first round pick, guys with that type of value get picked there all the time. If you want a college arm that doesn't need to be tinkered with and has starter potential you need to be in the top 1/2 of the draft. But you got a guy with a very live arm, two potential plus pitches, a floor of a high leverage reliever with the chance to be starter I'll get on board with that every time for where they took him. There's always a level of risk reward with every pick in every draft. Heck if we lived in a perfect world, Mike Trout would have been drafted #1 but there's a level of risk/reward associated with every pick. My issue, is I think the Red Sox may wait too long to move some guys to the bullpen when it seems they're destined for that move to begin with.
  12. The good news is the reason the system is so weak is because of the trades and graduations that have made the #1 team in baseball right now. A farm is supposed to supplement the big league club, but make no mistake this system is very weak. With that said, I'd be very very very surprised if anyone currently on the Portland seadogs roster ends up being an impactful MLB player. I think the team has some talented players who may contribute in a bench role, or out of the pen and there's nothing wrong with that. But the system is deviod of any blue chippers. With that said, there's a lot of talent in the low minors that if they pan out could really strengthen the system in a few years.
  13. Houck has also been pitching with a new set of mechanics and learning to repeat his delivery from a new release point. All things considered, I'd give a guy like that longer lead time than the prototypical college draftee. That was the scouting on him when we drafted him. A premium arm that may be destined for the bullpen, the Sox are trying to make him a starter and that's going to be a longer process. As far as I'm concerned he gets one full year to lay an egg and we can write it off so I'm not worried. But at some point you have to think they just put him in the pen and let him thrive. If a guy turns into a dominate set-up/man or closer, he's worth every penny you paid him in the back of the 1st round.
  14. Really could have used a Marco Hernandez right now. All teams endure injuries but it stings more when you have a bunch of guys playing the same position injured. I would be inclined to say we shouldn't have trade away Marrero, but I don't think he gives us anything more than what Lin would right now.
  15. He'll get two whole months of development and maybe some more playing time if an affiliate makes the post season. I can see them moving him up or down to get that playing time, and he'll get some at bats in the fall league too. Maybe, MAYBE if he absolutely mashes for 2 months he gets added to the 40 man and gets a September call up. He does have to be added at the end of the year anyways. Still sucks that he missed a lot of time, but this season doesn't have to be a complete waste.
  16. I was actually thinking of going with Hugo because it's the Spanish derivative of my name and my son will be 1/2 Colombian but my Wife doesn't like that name for a first name. You never realize how many people you hate until you have to name a kid. We settled on Theo for a first name, not really because of Theo Epstein although I thought it was pretty cool.
  17. Thank you for being the bigger man, I'm definitely a petty little prick sometimes
  18. LOL everyone seems to be excited for them to leave. Your right though, life is an amorphous process with different stages that have their own ups/downs. I've learned to love it all.
  19. It's a boy!
  20. He could've been a true ace in a hypothetical universe where the baseball season is 81 games long.
  21. pffft, we'll try to make 40 at least.
  22. although I probably shouldn't be talking, my wife is 7.5 months pregnant and things have gotten.....different the past month.
  23. I don't think anyone who spends 24/7 365 days a year in an online forum should be accusing anyone else of not having sex.
