  1. It's weird. Paxton gets all these starts but they threw Bello into the fire after one start and only 2 IP in spring training.
  2. I don't think that's the case. Jose has been a FA now for two weeks after being released. I'm not sure a team would want to give up assets for guy they could have just signed now. Team needs can change though. Re-read your post. You're pretty much saying exactly this.
  3. eh, I mean are they? I suppose to some extent you have to be right here, as the season goes on I'm sure they will get a better feel for who fits better with who. But it's not like any team starts a catcher 158 games a year. Most back up catchers easily start 40-60 games a year so by them going back and forth seemingly every day without some getting maybe a few more starts isn't abnormal.
  4. So, he should have pitched a perfect game with WONG.
  5. Remember guys like Price are always to complain about not signing (remember he was a cy young contender before he came here) but then complain about when the signing is presumably an overpay. High end baseball salary has been about a 9-10% inflation rate. What would we think of the DeGrome contract that would be 275/5 in 2028?
  6. They’re higher on luxury tax, than dollars committed
  7. Also, the Sox are 12th, not 14th. If you go by the only number that matters.
  8. Listen, I’m not going to defend all the moves the Sox have made nor defend them. But it’s not like they haven’t been transparent to their strategy. Their strategy just hasn’t paid off yet. They want sustained success, cut payroll, reset, add payroll on shorter term deals so you have the ability to reset every so often. And when the farm starts trickling up lock guys up and go big. They haven’t got to the end yet, but they just exceeded the payroll last year!!! 3 years after Bloom was supposedly brought in to cut payroll and he’s actually adding payroll to go over the luxury tax limit two years in a row. It’s not if they spend money. It’s how they spend their money.
  9. When is the last time they ranked out of the top 10 two years in a row? Is there precedent for this in the John Henry era?
  10. Of course, yet they still tried to sneak under. Even LAD have limits. The Mets, apparently do not.
  11. So might point is strengthened that the options were bad.
  12. This is baseball. They track everything.
  13. But who expected him to be this good? thats my point.
  14. I believe I made a bet with you that the Mets would reset. THey will not, they'd have to trade to do so. I don't think they plan on it either. I will lose that bet. But as of right now, it seems that the other teams not named NYM plan on resetting every 2-3 years. That's the new mold. Except for LAD who got screwed last year. Maybe that takes them out of the running for Ohtani?
  15. I'ts not giving them credit. It's not a popularity contest. It's math. You can't change the fact that the Sox went over last year. If you look at the long-term picture over the last 5 seasons the Sox remain one of baseballs biggest spenders. Yes or no. Do you actually think the Sox are going to constantly turn into a middling team 14th in payroll every year????
  16. Actually, the Dodgers did cut payroll enough to reset this year. They were blindsided by Trevor Bauer being reinstated. That money back on their books put them over the limit for this year. If that had not happened, they would be under the cap this year.
  17. Strahm was a reliever no one complained about not resigning here. If the Sox signed him as a starter this offseason Bloom would have been cauterized. Might be one of the best offseason moves so far.
  18. Sox are under cap by $16 million in a reset year. Yeah....that's not what small market teams do.
  19. You know why, it's not about how many but how often.
  20. I don't define "top spenders" based on one year soley, but rather what they've done on the long term. Sox JUST went over the luxury tax and have stated again and again that they will continue to do so in the future. Resetting is natural, its' to be expected. If the Sox continue to slash payroll next year then you conspiracy theorists will be proven right. But I'd be willing to wager the Sox go above the luxury tax again next year.
  21. That's totally unfair after just complaining about Moon being misleading. It's a reset year for them, if we want to have an honest conversation about this, it doesn't start by using a one year sample size in a reset year. They were 6th last year. 6th the year before that, and 4th the year before that. Then they were 1st. So whats the 5 year average? You strike me as one of the more intelligent posters in here. Do you honestly believe they're not going to jump back into the top 5-7 next year?
  22. Yeah but you also can't take that away either. You can't argue what they've spent. I understand what you're saying but on top of the 650 the Sox have a long history of being top spenders. The argument is how they spend their money. No one can say "they don't spend money" because that's simply not true. Sox are big spenders.
  23. Well I think it also shows that's not so much that the team failed to address the rotation this offseason, but they've done a piss poor job of developing, acquiring, and locking up good pitching talent for some time now. If the market stinks one year, you should have a couple of guys you can rely on and add depth or middling talent. The Red Sox rotation needed a complete rebuild and the only ACE potential talent either had significant age risk (Verlander), significant injury risk (DeGrome) or unknown risk (Senga). This is why developing pitching is becoming more important. Teams are locking up their guys more and more. The Sox need to serious address this problem. They already have, unfortunately it takes years to develop guys.
  24. Without a doubt Kluber is not looking like a great signing, but right now there does'n't seem to have been a better option out there that can't be filled by the talent on this roster. Now obviously guys like DeGrome or Senga could look pretty darn good by the end of the year. But does anyone really want to pay DeGrome when we are on the cusp on getting out from ONE pitchers contract who can't stay healthy????
