  1. There are different kinds of fans. And there often is a disconnect between them. On a site like this, there will be some of the more deep thinking , analytic types. They tend to like and identify with a guy like Bloom. They like browsing through the multitude of stats and metrics. They do want the team to win , but they seem to really enjoy the whole process more than the actual ballgame. On the other hand , you have the beer and hot dog fans. They know, like and sometimes get attached to many of the players. They have knowledge and strong opinions too, but little or no interest in fangraphs , MLBTR or the other more geeky sites and the ever growing alphabet soup of metrics. These are often the paying customers, so management would be smart to pay attention to their concerns as well. Losing their favorite players , then seeing ticket and concession prices go up does not sit well. One thing both types of fans should agree on: Finishing in the cellar , 21 games behind a flawed Yankee team is an abomination. That has to change .
  2. Bloom's statement is a insult to the fan's intelligence. He didn't sign Mookie because he didn't have the players to back him up. But he signed Devers because now he does have players to back him up. What utter nonsense. Mookie should still be here today. I am glad that he signed Devers , but let's be honest , Raffy is not the player that Mookie is. And as far as his building the farm , most of the team's best prospects were acquired pre Bloom. And we all know that players do decline as they age . No need to tell us that. I don't think too many fans are falling for this crap.
  3. The 2019 Red Sox had a very good lineup. They were hurt by a weak bullpen and injuries/underperformance of some starting pitchers.
  4. The Hall of Fame is a great honor for the players and a great thing for their families. The voters should not be so restrictive. Leaving out great players like Bonds, Clemens, Rose etc. is vindictive and dumb. And Billy Wagner has 422 saves and a career 2.31 ERA. By what biased or convoluted system is that not Cooperstown worthy? These writers need a good smackdown.
  5. Folks , here is the latest version : Bloom was forced to trade Mookie because Dombrowski " let him get away. " Ignore the fact that Dombrowski was axed in 2019 and Bloom traded Mookie in 2020.
  6. Like most stats, ERA can be deceptive in smaller sample sizes. But when looking at a career with a large base of innings pitched, ERA is the best indicator of success or lack of success for a pitcher. All of the little fluky things tend to even out over the long haul. All the other alphabet soup of stats for pitchers are just a part of the picture. ERA is the bottom line.
  7. Sam is just saying the same thing many of us have been saying all along. We want to see a good , exciting , competitive ballclub. And we are not happy with things at present. Do better.
  8. Matt Barnes is an okay reliever. Has his ups and downs. A career 4 ERA guy. Edwin Diaz is the best in the game at this time. Let's keep it real here.
  9. Chapman had a poor year with a 4.5 ERA . But more than that , he apparently quit on his team and walked out on his teammates.
  10. They are hoping to get AARP as a sponsor.
  11. The Sox seem to be assembling a half way decent ball club . A team that should be able to pass the Orioles and possibly the Rays , if Tampa Bay continues to drop off. However , this team does not look like it can match up with the top tier teams. A healthy and productive Chris Sale would be key , but that might be asking for too much.
  12. With McGuire behind the plate , this lineup would take the term " strong up the middle " to a whole new level. A new level of despair.
  13. Too much interest here about Ryan Brasier. He is just your basic veteran ham and egger with a career 4 plus ERA. Not the worst reliever in the league. He can have a place in the bullpen , but don't count on him too much. Not a big deal either way.
  14. Ort has elite velocity on his heater. Duran has elite speed and some power. You are hesitant to give up on guys like this too quickly. You keep hoping , maybe in vain , they can put it all together. Most of these other guys are just hopeless jabronis with little or no chance of improvement.
  15. Just a meaningless little line to appease the more gullible fans. Of course he has a plan. They all have a plan. By the way , where was John Henry ? Too busy to attend the press conference ?
  16. In the words of the late, great John Candy , " The moose out front should have told you." Chaim Bloom = Clark Griswold.
  17. Sports surgery is now a common and routine thing. He should have had it done. People making a big deal out of it are actually trying to defend signing Story for big bucks in the first place. Just another way of absolving Bloom. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Let's see more results and fewer excuses.
  18. Are we looking at five more years of Story calling in sick ?
  19. Will Old Red and Moonslav be able to work out their differences ? Will things be analyzed to the fullest ? Will the turd be polished correctly ? Will there be even more and longer lists ? And what about Bloom ? Tune in tomorrow to the next episode of Days of Our Sox .
  20. And with Alex Cora as the skipper.
  21. Bauer has a right to earn a living at his trade. However, a team also has a right not to want him as an employee. So, there is a contradiction there. I suppose some team will give him a shot. I don't have a problem with that. As to the question of will I root for him : My answer is " No. "
  22. Darwinzon just turned 26. He has a live arm. Some team will take him for sure.
  23. I think this signing was almost in the mandatory category. There was a growing fan rebellion that surely was heard in the Fenway Sports Group offices. As in all of these deals, there are risks Involved and time will tell if it pays off or goes sour. Hope it pays off in a big way.
  24. It was on this date 103 years ago that Sox owner Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees to raise some needed cash for a Broadway play. While there was no TalkSox forum back then , it has been reported that some Frazee supporters wrote to the newspaper praising the deal. They said that the Bambino's stats were misleading and he would not do well in New York. And that Frazee wanted to improve the Sox' farm system. Also that No No Nanette was a darn good show. They referred to those fans complaining about selling Ruth as " cry babies."
