Trying to pump up the optimism a bit. Sox now have a pretty good chance to get some revenge for the Flop at the Trop earlier this year. The Rays just lost a couple to the Cubs . They are showing some vulnerability. Their bullpen is a mess . They have tried to patch some holes by dumpster diving lately. Cash has been trying to mix and match with what he has. I think the Sox could be catching them at just the right time this weekend. Stay tuned.
J.D. has clearly been better than Justin Turner so far this season. And Nate has been light years better than Kluber. That is the reality. Now, things could change as the season moves along . But that is speculation. Reality vs speculation.
Exactly right. You cannot just expect to win a championship. It's too hard. The playoffs are such a crapshoot. What we want is to have a consistently good team. Maybe an off year now and then, but mostly just a team that can hang with the best and have a shot.
Bit of a conundrum. Should we spend to build a championship team , or hold off spending big until the team starts to look like a championship team ? How long will the fanbase support this ? Finishing last four years in a row in hopes of immediately winning it all in year five does not sound like a solid plan. How long before we start hearing about a ten year plan ?
No. I remember it well, but I don't know where to find it now. It was pretty well known at the time. He clearly said that he was spending too much on the team. I am sure some others recall that as well.
A manager has to use the bullpen pitchers that he has available. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It is probably the biggest reason for second guessing.
Maybe he just likes to use the word " awesome." He probably likes to say " amazing " too. As in , " This season is going to be like so amazing , it will be super awesome."
Sox in a nutshell : 2018 was a complete baseball team . One of the finest ever assembled. And it showed on the field , resulting in a championship. After the celebrations died down , John Henry decided that he was spending too much of his fortune on the ballclub. He wound up firing Dombrowski and bringing in Bloom in an attempt to save money while remaining competitive. The 2018 team has been systematically dismantled . Only two guys remain, Sale and Devers . They are still the best pitcher and best player on this team. The team has been rebuilt. For the most part, the guys who have been brought in are just not as good as the guys who left. The results are obvious just watching the games. And it shows in the standings. Being in the cellar has become the norm. That is where we are today.
Casas has a little Mark Fidrych in him. What they used to call a " free spirit " . He can add a little fun to the game. If he keeps hitting, he could become a breakout star and a fan favorite.
The Sox have not yet played some of the weaker clubs, but it is also true that they have not played the Dodgers, Mets, Astros, Rangers or Yankees. The thing is, no matter who they play, they need to play more consistently good baseball.
As we approach the Memorial Day milestone, I would say that this team is shaping up nicely. They look like they can compete with the better teams. They are getting some productivity throughput the lineup , not just depending on two or three guys . Chris Sale looks healthy and sharp. As always, a good bullpen is vital. This should be an interesting season.
I was just responding to Maxie's post that Kenley had the easiest job of anybody and he blew it . I disagree with that statement. Not trying to start a big ruckus over it.
I did not bring mental health into this at all. I don't know why you think that. I am just talking about the atmosphere surrounding trying to close a baseball game. That's all.
Some folks get so into analytics that they forget the psychology involved in sports. Now, I'm not a psychologist or anything, but to me it stands to reason that there is more pressure and stress involved in the final inning than there was earlier in the game. And I think that is felt throughout the ballpark, as well as in the living room or wherever you may be watching. And it has nothing to do with mental health. It's just normal human emotions.
