  1. The point is that leadoff is just one spot later than hitting ninth. Why not leave Kiki hitting ninth ? Was Cora thinking that the Sox would not get two baserunners in the last two innings, so Kike would not get an at bat ? What kind of thinking is that ? The result was that Refsnyder and Kiki did come to bat , but Duran did not. Bad move by Cora no matter how you look at it.
  2. That is no justification for the move. What you are doing is putting Refsnyder in the game in place of Duran. Kike winds up hitting leadoff instead of ninth. This was a managing blunder by Cora. There is no excuse.
  3. I would like to hear an explanation as to why Duran was taken out. Was he injured ? On the face of it, it makes absolutely zero sense.
  4. Have to feel for Mark Kotsay . Long time baseball guy who has the job of trying to manage a lame duck, truly awful excuse for an MLB ballclub.
  5. As usual, the trade deadline deals are very slow to get started. Only Texas (with Chapman ) has made a significant move so far. Everyone is playing the waiting game. A lot of rumors , but no action.
  6. I don't remember Ibanez being on that team. But they were loaded with left handed and switch hitters. I think Jeter and A-Rod were the only right handed guys in the lineup.
  7. The Yankee lineup is fundamentally flawed. Except for Rizzo, they are almost entirely right handed hitters. Very poor roster construction, especially for Yankee Stadium. Their championship teams of the past always had a number of left handed hitters . Why did Cashman get away from that ? Makes no sense.
  8. I am a believer in momentum. The Sox have plenty of it right now. They are playing with a lot of confidence. It's like they expect to score every inning.
  9. Matt Barnes was slotted into a role that was a notch above his skill level. He did his best and was actually a good closer for a short time. But it was not a good plan and it caught up to him after a while. But to say that he was weak mentally is way off base and unfair.
  10. The three wild card rule creates a situation where there seems to be many " buyers " and few " sellers " at the deadline . That would seem to indicate a seller's market. Should be a lot of competition for acquiring the available talent.
  11. The injury to Trout makes it more likely that the Angels will fall out of contention and be willing to trade Ohtani. But I don't think you want to give up too much to get him unless you are willing to outbid teams like the Dodgers and Mets this off season. The bidding will get uncomfortably high.
  12. That may sound strange, but I think it is quite possible nonetheless.
  13. I think Jansen was slated to pitch the ninth in a possible save situation , but Bautista had lost the lead and his pitch count was getting up there , so Dusty Baker made the switch. Also, I think you could make a case that Verdugo and/or Devers deserved a spot. Anyway, it was a good game. I enjoyed it. The All Star Game does not have the intense league rivalry it used to , but it is fun to watch. A lot of talent on display.
  14. I can't blame Cora for using Barnes, Strahm or whoever. He did his best in mixing and matching with what was a poorly constructed bullpen. Often it didn't work. Much better situation this year.
  15. I am now willing to go way out on the proverbial limb and make this shocking observation: Without Aaron Judge the Yankees are not a playoff team.
  16. I think you missed my point . I have never put anyone on ignore. I don't care what anyone thinks or posts. It's not at all important to me. I think putting someone onto ignore is ridiculous. I also don't think anyone should be banned except for something really outrageous. None of this stuff matters very much.
  17. I think sometimes folks use the little known " fake ignore " option. With that, they look like no nonsense types who won't tolerate "lesser " opinions, but they still get to read all of the posts.
  18. Duran looks like a possible breakout star. A game changer at bat and on the bases. He should play every day.
  19. Beane has been in charge for almost thirty years. He has yet to win a pennant. Any time they have had a decent team, he has gotten rid of the best players. He has become famous. I think it is fair to criticize him. Now he has weaseled his way into part owner of the franchise. Packing up and heading to Vegas. Flim Flam Man.
  20. Watching the Oakland A's is watching the deception of the modern day Flim Flam Man , Billy Beane , in live action. He has amassed a tidy sum of money and even part ownership of the team with his clever Money Ball scam. Parlayed book and movie deals into a small fortune while winning zero titles. Now, it is time to skip town and head to the Strip in Vegas.
  21. On a list of who NOT to trade, Duran would be near the top.
  22. My feeling is that this forum tends to be dominated by a different kind of fan than you will find in the general population of Red Sox Nation. Not saying that is good or bad, just that it is my take. A lack of tolerance for differing opinions is pretty obvious. As for me, I just want to have my beer, a bag of peanuts and enjoy the ballgame. I am not the avid fan I used to be. The whole alphabet soup of analytic stats is not interesting to me. I could not name you the starting lineup for some of the teams in MLB , much less have an opinion on some kid in A Ball. Good for those of you who can. I am not too happy the Sox have spent so much time in the basement in recent years, but I am not going to obsess about what John Henry's plan may be.
  23. The three wild card rule has changed the definition of what is a bad team. Now, you have to be truly awful to be completely out of contention at the half way point. I wonder how many teams will be " sellers" at the deadline ?
  24. I do give Bloom credit for improving the bullpen this year. That had been a glaring weakness for the past four seasons. But overall, the unhappiness with Bloom is justified and understandable. He has reshaped the team to his liking and the results have not been good. That is the plain truth. Baseball is a game. The object is to win. No amount of spin can change that.
