  1. There is an interesting flaw in the post season format that quite possibly makes it better to be the third wild card than to be the first or second. The first two play each other while the third plays the probably weaker Central Division winner.
  2. Eye test will always do it. Also win/loss records, ERA, batting average , or just about anything " old school. "
  3. Obviously, we have two separate types of fan on here. Two entirely different schools of thought. No problem.
  4. It's not the same old Song ?.
  5. I'm getting hungry.
  6. A mid-season trade can be tough on a player. And there is very little time to make the adjustment. It is not uncommon to see them struggle after the trade.
  7. Bloom was hired to field a sustainable, competitive ballclub , while keeping the spending down . He is in charge and we have to assume that he is the one making the decisions. And he has to be responsible for the results. Henry is a billionaire, who doesn't really know a heater from a sweeper from a slider from a hoagie.
  8. The deadline can be a double edged sword for the players. For every guy brought in, one of your teammates ( or maybe you ) has to go. So, they may not be all that upset when little is done.
  9. Watched some of the Yankee game last night. Boone looks bewitched, bothered and bewildered. Popping sunflower seeds like crazy.
  10. All is not lost. The Sox are still very capable of getting to the playoffs. The teams they have to catch are not all that formidable. And in the post season, there is that crapshoot factor. So let's not abandon ship just yet.
  11. Bloom: " It was today? "
  12. MLB trade rumors should be called " MLB trade reports." They seldom have rumors that actually come to pass. But they are usually the first to report on trades after they happen.
  13. " Bullpen game " is not a forbidden phrase. There is nothing wrong with it. They have become relatively common. And often are successful. Obviously, you need to have a good and a deep bullpen. The Sox bullpen is much improved from last year. But if you can't find another good starter, try to add some more quality to the pen.
  14. It goes without saying, but if you fail to score the ghost runner when on the road, you are in a very precarious position. Probably looking at a walk off.
  15. Rumor is the Phillies had a scout at today's Sox game. Supposedly looking at Duvall.
  16. If the definition of trolling is to post something to elicit a reaction , provoke or just break balls ; then there is quite a bit of it on here. Usually mixed in with opinions. Some are more blunt while others are more subtle about it. How we feel about it often comes down to that old adage about whose ox is being gored. And none of it bothers me in the least. I don't even have an ox to be gored.
  17. Because it is an open forum . And it can get pretty boring when it is just a small group of mostly like minded folks.
  18. All ideas and opinions are welcome. Or should be.
  19. The " decimated " farm has produced Duran, Casas, Bello, Crawford, Rafaela, Houck and more.
  20. One of the things to remember about the trade deadline is the anxiety it can cause for the players and their families. Not knowing where you are going to be a week from now. I know this is what they signed up for and they are well paid , but it has to be stressful for them.
  21. Christian Vazquez is an old school catcher from the Molina school of catching. You have to watch him play every day to appreciate the positive effect he has on a game and on the team in general. Nothing against Reese McGuire , but he is not in the same class as Vaz.
  22. The only other thing I can think of is that he wanted to keep Refsnyder in the game to possibly get another at bat. Kike was going to go in at shortstop regardless.
  23. Illinois' explanation doesn't justify the move. He is saying that Duran was taken out just so Kike could be placed one spot further away in the batting rotation. I would like to hear what Cora has to say about it.
  24. Well, to me , Cora wound up with Refsnyder followed by Kiki instead of Kike followed by Duran. He essentially removed Duran and kept Refsnyder in.
