The Red Sox traded Mookie Betts because they did not want to spend the money it would have taken to keep him. Plain and simple. For a proud, big market franchise it was a competitive and public relations blunder. The money is there. This year it is going to guys like Story and Kluber.
Generally, the GM makes the calls on trades. Maybe he told Henry that was his plan. Maybe Henry did order Bloom to trade Mookie, but he has never admitted it. Is it that Bloom has made every trade except for Betts? That one was above his level?
Always a good idea to have team meetings, manager pep talks or wear the good luck uniforms before a series against one of the worst teams in MLB. Makes it look like it worked.
Sox are reaching a make or break part of the schedule. A number of games against some of the weakest teams this side of Oakland. This could be their best chance to make a real run at it. If they play well, they could win all or nearly all of the games. If they don't play well ................................
The Phillies are in a tight, multi team wild card race. Evidently, they did not want to use a roster space for Song. I think it is good to have him back. He still might amount to something.
If you watch the Blue Jays enough you will see that they are not a very good team. The Orioles just beat them up in Toronto. Now they are without their best player ( Bichette) and their closer ( Romano ). It really should not be too hard to pass them in the standings. I fully expect the Sox to do that.
