  1. There is no reason to give at this time. Four games out of the third wild card is far from insurmountable. I can't believe the odds on fangraphs.
  2. I think MLB probably issued a " suggestion " to the teams to let the official scorers know that it is preferred that they award more hits and fewer errors. That is the most likely reason for the scoring.
  3. There are different types of fans. And that is fine. But reality is reality. All of the maybes, what ifs and might haves are meaningless.
  4. Here is why some of us " less sophisticated " fans like Dombrowski : He took over a Sox team that had finished dead last two years running. He saw what the problems were and immediately acted to correct them. No excuses needed. Just smart decisions. He immediately won the A.L. East three consecutive years. That was unprecedented. The Sox have never done that before or since. After being unjustly terminated, he went to Philly. They went to the World Series last year. Currently, they hold the first wild card. Citizens Bank Park is packed every night.
  5. The Cooler. And the plain, no spin, truth.
  6. That is just another stale excuse. Deal with reality. Anyway, the N.L. is every bit as tough as the A.L., If not tougher.
  7. I don't much care for all the analytics , but I will say that it was a treat to watch the killer Bees play the outfield for the Sox a few years ago. I think the Sox' pitchers appreciated it as well. It was light years better than what we have seen more recently. I don't think that is arguable.
  8. They used to just say a pitcher had a sore arm. That covered all of the various medical and technical terms.
  9. Yoshida may be wearing down a bit.
  10. I don't think kid's travel teams have much effect. Not too many kids are doing that. Years ago boys played baseball every day all summer. In some cases , all year round . If not baseball , they were playing some form of it , softball, stickball, wiffle ball or just playing catch, throwing the ball around. They became proficient and knowledgable in the game. It's not like that today. There is absolutely more talented foreign players than ever before , but too many American kids have other things they prefer doing. I wouldn't necessarily say the sport is watered down however. There is still a lot of talent.
  11. I'm trying to get a bet down.
  12. Hard to say if MLB is watered down or not. There are more teams than there used to be, but also a bigger talent pool to draw from. But there are more different sports attracting the best young athletes. There is a lot of exciting talent in the game today, but I think there is also a lack of fundamentals in many of the players. I don't think there is a clear-cut answer as to whether the overall caliber of play today is better, about the same or worse. It's just a matter of opinion. And of course, it also depends on just how far back in time you want to go.
  13. Fangraph's odds are meaningless. You will not find a bookie to give you those kinds of odds.
  14. I would guess that Phillies fans are much like Sox fans. Rabid, with severe mood swings depending on the team's recent performance.
  15. It is " our " yacht . Of course , we don't get to use it. And the Red Sox are " our " team. Of course, we have to pay to get in Fenway to watch them. But it's good to feel that " we " are in on the action.
  16. dWAR is an analytic that is derived by a special group of nerds who ( allegedly) watch every pitch of every game and , with their expertise , come up with a stat known in the business as Ultimate Zone Rating or UZR for short. Then, using a secret formula , that is converted into dWAR , defensive wins above replacement , which basically tells you how many games a given player wins or loses on defense as opposed to the average jabroni. It is not clear just who these special nerds are or if they are doing this voluntarily . But it is all very scientific. So, don't depend on your eye test , instead go with UZR , which is essentially someone else's eye test.
  17. There is probably more randomness and more variables in baseball than in most other sports. Nothing is proven in any one baseball game. Or even in a three game series. That is just the nature of the game. In the long run , the better teams will probably prevail. But even that is not a certainty.
  18. Max, Mookie was under contract through the 2020 season. As for a closer, the money should have been spent as needed to get a good one. Kimbrel had 42 saves in 2018 . In 2019, Workman led with a total of 16. No one was a close second. The devaluing of the bullpen was a major factor in the relatively poor result in 2019. And it has remained a sore spot until this year.
  19. That was an exciting ballgame. Back and forth right until the final out. I think some fans have become a little too jaded, unhappy , full of themselves , entitled or just plain churlish to appreciate and enjoy a good baseball game.
  20. I don't know why the Yanks don't just terminate Boone right now. He is dead man walking. All he can do is say the same tired platitudes after every loss. It is obvious that the players, except for Judge and a couple of others, have quit on him. There is no sense letting him suffer.
  21. Beatdown in the boogie down Bronx, part 3.
  22. Brito has nothing. Jump right on him in the first inning and the Yanks will quit.
  23. You might want to go back and clean this post up.
